NEC M311X Projector Overview

The NEC M311X is a compact, XGA (1024 X 768) LCD projector with a feature set that should be appealing to both educational and business presenters.  In addition to network and PC-free presentation capabilities, the M311X features a 10-watt speaker, quick on and off, DICOM SIM mode and the ability to project an image from an angle.  This audio output is more than sufficient for presentations in the classroom or conference room, without the need for powered external speakers.  The M311X can be connected to a computer or video source via a standard VGA cable, composite and S-video, HDMI, USB and wired or wireless (with optional module) 802.11 b/g/n.  It can also present directly from a USB thumb drive.  The M311X has a rated output of 3100 lumens and a 1.7X zoom lens, as well as digital zooming.

The NEC M311X is relatively quick to set up, with an instant on feature and automatic keystone correction that speeds up the process once you have it close.  The Auto lamp power feature adjusts the power level of the lamp depending on the brightness of the projected image, thus resulting in power savings and potentially improved lamp life.  It also offers extremely long lamp life (10,000 hours) in Eco mode.  Combined with a 5000 hour filter life, the M311X should be operating for a long time without maintenance.

NEC M311X Projector Special Features

Geometric Correction Tool – By using the Image Express Utility Lite software provided, the M311X is able to project a geometrically correct image with the projector placed at an angle from the screen.  This feature is similar to keystone correction, but can correct greater misalignment than simple keystone correction.  It can be handy in a presentation where it is not practical for the projector to be placed directly back from the middle of the screen.

DICOM SIM Image Mode - NEC has included a special picture mode to the M311X that displays images simulating the DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine) standard used with B/W medical imaging (such as X-rays).  This mode optimizes black/gray/white detail.  Like other projectors that include such a mode, it is not intended for actual medical evaluation, but it allows for more accurate training of medical students, as well as more detailed medical imaging presentations.

Auto Lamp Mode – When set to Auto Lamp in Eco mode, the M311X automatically adjusts the Eco lamp setting between Off and Normal, depending on the brightness of the projected image.  This means that with darker scenes, the lamp may have its power consumption dropped by up to 25%, resulting in reduced energy usage and extended lamp life.

Wireless Projection From iPad – In addition to the network presentation abilities of the M311X (see the “Wired and Wireless Networking” section), NEC’s Wireless Image Utility allows for wireless projection directly from an iPad, without a network connection.

USB Memory Viewer – This feature enables you to display photos (JPG) stored on a USB storage device, without the use of a PC.  There is also software to convert a PowerPoint presentation to JPG images to allow the presenter to do a full PowerPoint presentation without a PC.
