Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player - Review Summary

Oppo BDP-83 Universal Blu-ray Player: Bottom Line

Once again, Oppo has provided a product that combines quality and performance at a reasonable price.  The video and audio quality of the BDP-83, whether with DVDs or Blu-ray disks, is second to none.  The flexibility of connections and output options will allow for integration in any system.  Additionally, the ability to output video, music and photos via USB makes the BDP-83 double as a media server in your system.
As I mentioned in the introduction, some may quibble that with player prices in the $200 range, the $499 price for the BDP-83 puts it in the higher range of players.  Even if you don’t care about SACD or DVD-A playback, the BDP-83 is worth every penny for its DVD and BD playback quality.  If you have any size library of DVDs and BDs and have a home theater with a projector and large screen, the BDP-83 should be in your system.  As a price comparison, the Denon DBP-2010CI uses the same ABT processing as the BDP-83, does not play SACD or DVD-A or have a USB port and lists for $200 more than the BDP-83.

For quite some time, I’ve been using an Oppo DV-983H DVD player and a Playstation 3 in my home theater as my reference components for video sources and they’ve been excellent performers.  They have both just been replaced by the BDP-83.

Oppo BDP-83: Pros

  • Truly universal player – plays DVD-A, SACD, DVD and Blu-ray
  • Outstanding video and audio playback
  • DVD upconversion that is second to none
  • Onboard decoding or bitstream pass through of DolbyTrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
  • Excellent tech support and product upgrades
  • Can display video and photos, as well as play audio from a USB drive

Oppo BDP-83: Cons

  • Still looking for some
