So, how did we get such excellent numbers – and color accuracy? Easy, just plug in these settings into your HD25-LV projector. You may not notice any great differences, as the Optoma’s rather excellent right out of the box, especially for such a low cost projector.

Unfortunately Optoma only offers a single control each for Red, Green, and Blue. Most past Optoma’s have the traditional two controls for each primary color, which normally allows for a better calibration. That said, the HD25-LV does pretty well without splitting up the range.

Mike provided these additional notes, regarding the ability to calibrate different settings, limitations, etc.:

NOTE: Every mode except Photo has similar grayscale balance, with green low and blue high throughout the IRE range.

The biggest issue with the HD25-LV is that no mode can be adjusted without turning into User mode. Furthermore, there is no way to save any adjustments you make. If, for example, you’re in Cinema mode and you accidentally bring up one of the adjustment parameters (like Brightness or Contrast), anything you’ve done in User mode is wiped out and replaced by Cinema mode setting.

Regarding the grayscale: Optoma usually has full grayscale calibration abilities in their projectors. Not so with the HD25-LV. Instead of having Gain and Offset RGB controls to cover both ends of the IRE range, there is a single trio of RGB controls (that act full range) under “White” in the “Color Settings” portion of the menu. This can work if the RGB values are consistent throughout the range to begin with, but with the HD25-LV, they’re not. Nonetheless, I was able to get a decent grayscale balance with an average Delta E of 1.8.

Bottom line: The HD25-LV isn’t by any means great, “right out of the box”, but not bad. Change a few of the settings for some real improvment, by using our calibration info above.

For even more improvement adjust the CMS settings with the ones Mike came up with when calibrating. They will be in the new subscriber area. Do them all, and the HD25-LV projector’s color starts looking extremely good considering the price point! Once we input all of Mike’s settings, the HD25-LV turned out to be a great projector to watch! Subscribers will also be able to access all the calibration reporting that the software Mike uses – CalMan, provides, as well as CIE charts.
