The Sharp PG-D50X3D is the slightly brighter and more expensive sibling of the PG-D45X3D projector. This comparison is to help you decide if the PG-D50X3D is a better fit for your presentation needs than the PG-D45X3D, which we recently reviewed in-depth.

The Sharp PG-D50X3D (MSRP $2995) is virtually identical to the PG-D45X3D, save for a few differences. The PG-D50X3D is brighter, offering 5000 lumens rather than 4500 like its slightly cheaper sibling. Therefore, it can handle your presentations in a bigger conference room or training room without breaking a sweat, and is even capable of handling a small auditorium effortlessly. The other projectors in the series, the PG-D45X3D and PG-D40W3D, are slightly dimmer at 4500 and 4000 lumens, respectively, and are thus ideal for small or medium sized conference rooms or classrooms instead.

The PG-D50X3D also uses a different lamp from the PG-D45X3D. While both lamps last 2000 hours in their brightest modes, the PG-D50X3D’s lasts 2500 hours in eco-mode as opposed to the PG-D45X3D’s 3000 hours. The lamp of the PG-D50X3D costs more than its sibling’s ($399 versus $299) because it handles more brightness. And because it is brighter and is working harder, the PG-D50X3D is a bit louder than its sibling, claiming 41db at full power and 36db on eco-mode. The PG-D45X3D, by contrast, has a much more reasonable amount of noise, 37db at full power and 30db in eco-mode, and is more easily talked over.

Both weighing in at 12.8 lbs., The PG-D50X3D and PG-D45X3D are alike in many ways as well. They both boast 3D capabilities, and have a contrast ratio of 2500:1, native XGA resolution, two 5-watt speakers, wired networking, a DVI input, and a 3-year warranty to keep you covered!

The photos were taken using the PG-D50X3D's sibling, the PG-D45X3D. With that noted, the images from the PG-D50X3D projector should look very similar to the one we reviewed, save for being a bit dimmer and with a bit less contrast.

So why the Sharp PG-D50X3D?

If you’re looking for a bright projector that can handle your conference room, training room, classroom or even small auditorium with ease, the PG-D50X3D projector can meet your challenge. While the PG-D50X3D may be a little bit louder since it’s working harder to be brighter, and although the lamp may need replacing a little sooner and might cost a bit more to do so, the tradeoff for higher brightness is worth it. However, you need only spring for this PG-D50X3D, the most expensive in the series, if you need the absolute most horsepower for a big space you need to fill. Otherwise, the PG-D45X3D will suit you just fine.
