Sony VPL-DW240 Projector Review - Hardware Tour:  Overview, Connector Panel, Control Pad, Lens, Remote Control

Overview

The VPL-DW240 is a compact projector that is supplied with a carrying case (bag).

When placed on a table the projector's lens is located toward the right side of the front panel, as seen in the 1st gallery photo above.  To the left of the lens is a ventilation inlet grill and IR window for the remote control receiver is located at the lower-right corner of the front panel. There is a front adjustment foot release button at the bottom-center of the front panel and when pressed an adjustment foot drops down, as shown in the 5th photo above.

The 2nd photo above shows the right side of the projector where the single speaker is located.  The 3rd photo shows the rear panel of the projector with its connector panel (more on that subject is provided below).  The 4th photo shows the left side of the projector with its ventilation exhaust vent.

The top of the projector, as can be seen the first 4 photos above, has the projector's control pad as well as the lens adjustments.  These are described below.

Connector Panel

The VPL-DW240 has a rather simple connector panel, as compared to many other business/education class projectors.  From left to right there are connectors for:

  • Audio Output for connection to external power speakers
  • USB Power Connector (5 volt @ 2 amps) for powering a Stick-PC or Miracast adapter/dongle
  • Two HDMI Inputs for digital video/audio input
  • Composite (analog) Video Input
  • Analog Computer/Video Input (RGB or YPbPr format)

Below those connectors is the power connector toward the left.

As compared to some other business and education projectors in this class, what is missing are a wired network connector, an analog audio line-level input connector, a microphone input connector and a fully functional USB connector (and multimedia player functions that could be used to display slide shows/presentations/videos directly from a USB flash drive).  These limitations could be an issue for some potential customers.

Control Pad

The control pad is located on the top of the projector.  Included are the usual Power on/off button, Input selector, menu button, 4-way navigation buttons and a button to blank (mute) the display.  To the right of the control pad buttons are two status lights.

Lens

The VPL-DW240 has an opening in the top panel, shown above, to access the mechanical zoom and focus adjustments for the projector's lens.  The lens has a modest 1.3:1 zoom ratio, but that's enough to provide enough placement flexibility for many mounting situations.  The lens has a moderate throw ratio range of 1.36:1 up to 1.77:1.  that means for an 80 inch wide image  (when projecting a full width image) the projector-to-screen throw distance must be between (80 x 1.36 =) 108.8 inches and (80 x 1.77 =) 141.6 inches.

Remote Control

The VPL-DW240 is supplied with a very compact remote control that includes buttons for all of the necessary functions.  The remote measures approximately 4.3 x 2.4 x 0.3 inches. The buttons are not backlighted so the may be difficult to read in a dark environment, but this type of projector is normally going to be used in a classroom, conference room or other venue with some room lighting.

The green button near the top-right corner of the remote is the Power button.  Below that are three buttons for, from left to right, for selecting:

  • Signal Input;
  • APA (auto pixel alignment) used only for analog computer signal input), and;
  • ECO reduced power mode, either the preset ECO mode or a user defined energy saving mode

The group of buttons below that are for displaying and navigating the projector’s on-screen menus.  The Menu button is at the upper-left of this group brings up the top-level menu.  The 4-way Navigation buttons surround the Enter button in the center of this group.  Toward the top right of this group is a button to Reset the highlighted menu item to its factory default value, and toward the lower left of this group is the button to Return to the previous menu.

Below the menu/navigation group are 3 buttons to change the display’s Aspect Ratio, Keystone adjustment, and to display a Test Pattern.

The group of buttons toward the bottom of the remote are for Digital Zoom (to enlarge a portion of the image), Volume (for controlling the internal speaker), Freeze to pause the current image, Blank to cut off the projected image, and Mute to cut off sound from the projector’s speaker.
