This article discusses the Sony VPL-EX145 's differences.

Sony VPL-EX145 Projector Comparison

Check out our review of the Sony VPL-EX175 projector.

The third projector in Sony's VPL-E Series, the VPL-EX145, is the second most advanced projector of the four. In comparing the VPL-EX145 with the VPL-EX175, we found many similarities and differences between the two (although they are more alike than different). This comparison is designed to help you decide if the Sony VPL-EX145 XGA LCD portable projector is a better choice for your specific presentation needs than is the VPL-EX175, which we recently reviewed in-depth.

In comparing the VPL-EX145 with the VPL-EX175, we found multiple similarities. The VPL-EX145 and the VPL-EX175 both have the standard native resolution of 1024x768 (XGA). Second, the VPL-EX145, like its counterpart, has a monitor output which allows you to conveniently connect your computer to your projector. Also included in the VPL-EX145 and the VPL-EX175 is networking capability. The also VPL-EX145 has the same contrast ratio of 4000:1, meaning the colors will stand out equally strong in both projectors. Since the two projectors boast 3LCD technology, the colors produced by the VPL-EX145 are just as rich.

The VPL-EX145 is also equally capable of producing sound in large presentation environments with its single 10 watt speaker. Each is ideal for larger group settings such as conference or training rooms. Both portable, they are equal in size and shape. At 5" x 12" x 11" (HxWxD) and a little over 7 pounds, the VPL-EX145 is compact and therefore easy to transfer, either throughout your office/school building or even in your carry-on when traveling for business. The VPL-EX145 also shares the same lamp life of 3000 hours at full power, and 6000 hours when in eco-mode.

The only two major differences found between the VPL-EX145 and the VPL-EX175 is price and brightness. The VPL-EX145 has an MSRP of about $1100, whereas the VPL-EX175 has an MSRP around $1420. And at 3100 lumens, the VPL-EX145 is only slightly less bright than its counterpart which has 3600 lumens. So in conclusion, the VPL-EX145 is not as bright which explains why it is less expensive.

The photos above were taken using the Sony VPL-EX100's sibling, the VPL-EX175. With that noted, the images from the VPL-EX100 projector should look fairly similar to the one we reviewed, save for being dimmer and with less contrast.

Above, the Sony VPL-EX175 projector in a higher resolution setting, showing off the Sony's sharpness.

So what about the VPL-EX145 makes it so appealing? For one, the price is lower than that of the VPL-EX175, its most advanced sibling. Its 3100 lumens, though lower than its more expensive counterpart, is still more than enough in most presentation environments. Its 3 year parts and labor warranty is pretty much the best you will come by, ensuring a low cost of operation. If what you are looking for is an entry level projector to meet your presentation needs, then the VPL-EX145 will surely get the job done!
