Sony VPL-TX7 Color & Picture Quality

The Sony VPL-TX7 has a 3.63 inch LCD panels that produce an exceptional image. Exceptional in both sharpness and in color reproduction. This was expected since LCD projectors, generally do produce incredibly nice picture. Although sharp, the pixels can be a little visible. This projector was no exception. Although it was not distracting in any way and ultimately contributed to the perceived sharpness. I have always found that when you compare LCD and DLP, the DLP has a softer image.

With all that said, I have to give Sony credit for making a projector that looks great right out of the box. The Sony VPL-TX7 does however come with different color modes so you can project onto different color surfaces and still get accurate color. Below are some images of the projector in various color modes. We will then move on to how it handles compression of higher resolutions.

Where the Sony fell a little short is in it support of higher resolutions. Most XGA projectors are able to support up to a 1600x1200 resolution signal. The Sony could not handle this resolution and thus that was a definite shortcoming, but not a big one. It did support 1280x1024 pretty nicely, although you will have to go into the menu system and change a setting from FULL1 as it is called to FULL2 to get the image to be at the right resolution. It letterboxes on the right and left side if you don't.

This change to the projector is not difficult and it if you just need little higher resolution than the native, it works quite well. Picture quality was sharp and I can see using this mode for an extended amount of time without a lot of eye-strain.
