Sony VPL-VW1000ES Projector Calibration and Settings

Posted on July 26, 2013 by Art Feierman

Once again, we adjust the general controls and perform a grayscale calibration. As is normal, we do not do a full individual color CMS calibration. We leave that for your calibrator. If you aren't into calibrating your VPL-VW1000ES (click for specifications) - either yourself (hobbyist), or hiring, then we strongly recommend you try plugging in our settings, and seeing if you like them better than the defaults.  Of course, for a projector at this price range, we expect just about everyone will have theirs professionally calibrated.

Sony VPL-VW1000ES Color Temperature

VPL-VW1000ES Lumen Output and Color Temp at 100 IRE (mid zoom)
Reference 1269 @ 7127, 1368 lumens @ 6858 with Color Temp on DCI
TV 646 @ 7560
Cinema Film 1 704 @ 6934
Cinema Film 2 330 @ 6579
Cinema Digital 526 @ 6752
Game 1269 @ 7193
Photo 1128 @ 5916
Bright Cinema 1187 @ 7180
Bright TV 967 @ 11508
Reference (or Cinema Film 1 which is seems identical)
30 IRE 7390
50 IRE 7082
80 IRE 7117
100 IRE 7127

As with Sony's flagship 2K projector, the VPL-VW95ES, out of the box performance is a little cool (bluish white).  You might say "what about Cinema Film 2, which is almost dead on 6500K?" but Mike reports that Reference is the much better balanced mode, and far brighter.

Sony VPL-VW1000ES Basic Settings

Settings for measurements (default values are in parenthesis):

Gamma (Off) (2.4) (Off) (Off) (2.4)
Iris (Off) (Auto Full) (Auto Full) (Auto Ltd) (Off)

In addition to calibrating Red, Green and Blue for a correct grayscale balance (6500K), there are a number of other settings that come into play. Typically Contrast and Brightness (white balance and black balance), need to be done first. Color saturation and gamma also need adjustment.

Sony provides you with a lot of modes, but it certainly seems that you really only need the Reference mode, which calibrates the best and is also the brightest.  Now that's nice, real nice.

VPL-VW1000ES Projector: Eco-Mode Brightness

Dropping the VW1000ES into "eco" mode - low lamp power, measured 884 lumens in Reference mode, down from 1269 lumens at full power.  That's a drop of almost exactly 30%.  That 30% should be consistent, regardless of what Mode you are using.  This Sony uses a 330 watt UHP lamp, and the projector draws up to 420 watts in operation. That's not too bad, but it's probably double that of a 60" LCDTV.
