I'll have to investigate the science further. Certainly, that's been my impression over the various trade shows... The content with shutter glasses always seems darker. It may be less the case, with passive polarized "shades" such as the cheap kind they provided for AVATAR! -art

Hi Steve,

Well, the most important question you ask is "could it be too bright"? Well, if I was a reviewer at "central", I'd say yes, but generally, At least with a 128" HC gray screen, so far, from my experience, the answer is no.

That said, it is very bright. I have not yet worked out ft/lambert numbers, but on a 100" screen "in a cave" it just might be too bright. Filling my 128" firehawk, with various lighting, including none, it was never too bright for the olympics, and movie watching was also fine, although once, even I changed the lamp to low power mode... So, your call.

As to 3D... as I've stated, I'd be very pleasantly surprised if any of these early 3D ready projectors will actually run Avatar in 3D. Initially, I do believe that 3D on projectors like these will consist mostly of gaming, and some demo stuff. We shall see.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the help. I'm on it. Yes, I'm a MAC guy first, and my most powerful PC here, only has an Nvidia 6100 I think, not exactly a gaming powerhouse, but, I'll sort it out. Thanks. -art

Slight correction, the http://www.iz3d.com/driver supports Nvidia cards as well, but, is only free for ATI cards.

Also, Nvidia, Tridef/DDD, and IZ3D, all have gaming drivers and support a decent number of popular games.

Art, it sounds like you're an Apple guy...but as far as I know there simply is no support for 3D on the Mac. However, dust off that PC and you have lots of options depending on the video card!

http://3dtv.at (stereoscopic movie player)

http://www.tridef.com (game drivers and another movie player but with real-time 2D-3D conversion)

http://www.iz3d.com/driver (for ATI cards)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_Main.html
(nvidia drivers, 3D movies)

http://www.nvidia.com/object/3D_Vision_3D_Games.html
(huge list of compatible 3D games)

If you have any questions probably the best resource on-line is mtbs3d.com

Hey Art

Thanks for the update. I am waffling back and forth between this and the W1000. I am fine with 720 because I mostly watch DVR'd movies in HD but I will be getting a bluray player. So I am in that downstairs family room crowd but have Chocolate walls and it gets DARK but have a white screen. Could this projector be too bright? Could this be another HDDVD and work but next season it is not compatable. Really looking forward to the rest of the review and the SOMEDAY (not your fault) review of the W1000 as they are in pretty close to the same budget category.

Thanks for all that you do!

"Since you are using glasses and feeding one eye, at a time, basically, bye bye, half of your lumens."

My understanding is that this isn't true. The lumen loss mostly because of the tinting of the glasses. If you close one eye, the screen world doesn't get dimmer. ie. the perception of brightness isn't an aggregate of the light collected by both eyes.
