Home Theater Projectors – JVC DLA-RS60 Arrives – when it rains – it pours

January 29th, 2011 Art Feierman

Greetings all,

The floodgates are apparently now open (if 3 months late).  the JVC DLA-RS60 (click for specs) - JVC’s top of the line home theater projector, landed here yesterday 1/28/11.   The DLA-RS60 is a 3D projector (and of course 2D) using JVC’s LCoS panels – which they call D-iLA (Sony calls theirs SXRD, etc.)   This JVC projector uses active LCD shutter glasses Read the rest of this entry »

Sharp XV-Z17000 3D Projector – A First Look Review

The Sharp XV-Z17000 looks like it's predecessor

The Sharp XV-Z17000 looks like it's predecessor

Wow, a practical 1080p home theater projector.  I set the Sharp XV-Z17000 down on the table in my theater, plugged it in, connected it to my PS3, and DirecTV box, and dropped in Alice In Wonderland in Blu-ray 3D.

Eureka!   It works – in “living” 3D.   My PS3, and the disk recognized the projector as a Blu-ray 3D device, and everything fired right up.

So, what have we here?  The XV-Z17000 projector from Sharp is essentially a slightly updated (overall) version with 3D, of the existing XV-Z15000 which has been around more than a year, and Read the rest of this entry »

Viewsonic Pro8200 Projector Update

January 27th, 2011 Art Feierman

Update: The Viewsonic Pro8200 projector review has been completed and published.

Greetings all.  For those of you who read my previous post, or commented about the Pro8200 projector, you are aware of some issues.  I’ve addressed these to Viewsonic, and got some answers for you.

First, I’m told a new Viewsonic Pro8200 (click for specs) will arrive here tomorrow.  It has the latest shipping firmware.  I will check out, and confirm.  These are the issues I’ll be looking at:

1.  Problems with HDMI –  retesting the same hookups the first unit had problems with.
2.  Checking for other HDMI artifacts when coming from a different source (reported by a reader)
3.  Static or sound from an hdmi input coming through the projector’s speaker, when the projector is turned off!
4. Failure to hold various user settings in memory when the projector is turned off.

Now the first thing of interest in conversing with Viewsonic about the Pro8200 projector, is Read the rest of this entry »

Mitsubishi HC9000D 3D Projector – First Look, from CES 2011

January 12th, 2011 Art Feierman

OK, I got my second look at the HC9000D (click for specs) at CES, although it was first revealed at CEDIA last September.

Mitsubishi's new HC9000D 3D home theater projector

At that time, it was a first gen engineering sample, and had issues with the 3D.  While the sample displayed at CES last week was far better, I’m told that even that is old, compared to what is getting ready to ship.

That’s right, the Mitsubishi HC9000 projector’s first shipments are scheduled for February.  Hey, experience says, first shipments often slip.  Let’s just say my confidence that it will be “in the stores” this quarter, are very high, even if they don’t make their first half of February target.

What have we here in terms of the HC9000D?  Well, let’s start with the basics.  the HC9000 projector is an LCoS, specifically an SXRD LCoS, which means Read the rest of this entry »

Home Theater Projectors – Action at CES -Panasonic Projectors

January 11th, 2011 Art Feierman

Time to fill you in, re what I learned at CES about home theater projectors.  As someone pointed out, the last blog mostly focused on pico projectors.  (Hey, they may not be “home theater” but they are “portable” theater, and techically, with some pushing 300+ lumens, they are as bright as some of the home theater projectors we’ve reviewed (at least their best modes).

No, I’m not recommending trading in your  Epson or Panasonic home theater projectors Read the rest of this entry »

Pico Projectors at CES – and Pico Projector Cameras and…

January 6th, 2011 Art Feierman

Very cool!

Last night I attended the Digital Experience (the major Press only event) at the CES Show, and pico projectors and pico projector containing devices were in abundance.  More than 100 vendors were showing off their technology, mostly at small 10×6 foot table top booths.  I liked the pico projector cameras and camcorders I saw.  Not bad! Viewsonic Pro8200 – a First Look projector review

January 5th, 2011 Art Feierman

Update: The Viewsonic Pro8200 review has been posted!

Greetings all,

I must be brief.  Here are some tidbits about the Viewsonic Pro8200.  Technically I should have left for the Consumer Electronics Show about 10 minutes ago, but I still have another 30 minutes in my window to make the Sony press conference.   I’ll just have to drive a little faster, to be sure to make it on time.

The Pro8200 (and I will be brief), is a low cost Read the rest of this entry »
