New Home Theater Projectors – Review Activity Update

September 17th, 2009 Art Feierman

UPDATE: The BenQ W6000 and  Mitsubishi HC3800 projector reviews have been posted.

Greetings!

OK, here’s the lastest.  Lots of new home theater projectors to review, the next couple of months!

BenQ W6000:  Almost done!  While I still may post this weekend, the review will not be fully finished.  To properly finish the W6000 (an otherwise excellent projector, but with a dynamic iris that definitely can stand some reworking). I’m waiting for some real feedback from BenQ (hopefully Monday, they tell me).   Read the rest of this entry »

Epson Home Cinema 705HD Projector Announcement – Review to come Later

September 17th, 2009 Art Feierman

OK, it’s Sept. 17, 2009, and someone has just announced a new 720p projector.  That’s the first one in quite a while, and the pricing is rather nice.  MAP pricing is $749.

The new model, of course, is the Epson Home Cinema 705HD home theater projector.

OK, it’s inexpensive, but perhaps more importantly, it really is designed as a low cost multi-use room projector. Read the rest of this entry »

CEDIA 2009 – New Home Theater Projectors – Part 1

September 15th, 2009 Art Feierman

Greetings all,

Well, I survived CEDIA, once again.  I hate east coast trade shows (ok, I know the east coast people probably think the same about west coast shows).   It means an extra day, and while Atlanta was just fine, Denver was more fun, and, geez, what would it take to get the CEDIA folks to do Las Vegas, where hotel rooms would be dirt cheap (in Sept), and the partying, even better.

But, to business – or should I say home theater projectors:

T’was an interesting CEDIA show in terms of home theater projectors.  Not so much because of all the new projectors Read the rest of this entry »

BenQ W6000 Home Theater Projector “First Look” Review

September 13th, 2009 Art Feierman

UPDATE: The BenQ W6000 projector review has been posted.

The BenQ W6000 is one of 3 new 1080p projector offerings from BenQ.

Front view of the $2799 BenQ W6000 DLP projector

Front view of the $2799 BenQ W6000 DLP projector

There’s a lower cost – $999 – W1000, which should also be shipping shortly, and a very expensive LED lightsource top of the line, due out in January/February ’10 timeframe.  (Should be most interesting!!!)

But let me try to keep my focus – this blog is about the BenQ W6000 projector.

What’s the scoop?

The BenQ W6000 s a DLP home theater projector, with 1080p native resolution, and a street price that should be based on MAP pricing, of $2799. Since the BenQ is one of the first fall projectors to ship this year, it likely will hold pretty close to that price for the immediate future.

The most notable “spec” is the W6000′s brightness.  Even in the W6000′s best mode we measured over Read the rest of this entry »

New Home Theater Projectors I won’t get for my Birthday

September 4th, 2009 Art Feierman

I’m back.  Should have included this in the last blog.

While BenQ, Sony, Optoma, and others have sent me projectors for my birthday (yeah, I have to give them back), here are a couple of folks who won’t be enriching the celebration: Read the rest of this entry »

New Home Theater Projectors for my Birthday

September 4th, 2009 Art Feierman

Greetings all,

Well, I”m buried in new home theater projectors.  Tomorrow really kicks off the college football season, so I’ll likely start with one (BenQ W6000) for the first game of the day – Penn State vs. Akron (go PSU), and switch into two other projectors during the day, before a bunch of friends Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung SP-A600 1080P Projector – Round 2

July 21st, 2009 Art Feierman

UPDATE: The Samsung SP-A600 Review has been posted.

OK, the first SP-A600 which arrived a couple of weeks ago, was an early engineering sample.  After much debate, Mike and I decided not to review it.  My initial impression was that the color tables were not “finished”, and some minor communications issues with the HDMI port (only on occasion).  If we did the review based on that unit, I feared all of our calibration settings would be worthless to folks buying production units.

Now for the good news.  A replacement A600 (actually two Read the rest of this entry »

Infocomm 2009 – A few new home theater projectors announced

June 26th, 2009 Art Feierman

Greetings again!

I’m going to keep almost all of this piece to the home theater side of what was shown at Infocomm 2009.  There was far more action – as expected, on the business side, with many dozens of new biz projectors.  Hey, this is a home theater blog, so I won’t bore you.  I will add an article about Infocomm 2009 to the website late next week, discussing a number of the new business projectors as well as, in general LED light source projectors and 3D projector solutions.  3D is getting A LOT of attention in the commercial space, but I figure we are still a few years off before we see any real move toward 3D in our homes.

Where to start?  Hmm!  Vivitek, a not overly well known Taiwanese manufacturer was showing an LED lightsource based projector, the H9080HD.  I should have a review unit late July, and publish (hopefully) in the  first half Read the rest of this entry »

Samsung SP-A600 Projector arrives – an engineering sample

June 26th, 2009 Art Feierman

UPDATE: The Samsung SP-A600 Review has been posted.

Greetings!

The other day, I received an early engineering sample of the Samsung SP-A600.  I fired it up yesterday for the first time.

Now I’ve got a quandry.  Whether to do a review on this unit, or send it back and wait for a late pre-production unit, or a full production projector. Read the rest of this entry »
