I met with Mitsubishi yesterday at CEDIA.

Mitsubishi is launching two new projectors at CEDIA. The HC7900DW, the replacement for the HC7800D that we have reviewed. I’m sure you are wondering about the W in the name. Easy, stands for a white case, rather than the black case of the HC7800D, but the real improvements are under the hood.

A big theme with Mitsubishi is their proprietary 2D-3D engine, which they claim looks very close to the quality of viewing original 3D content. That’s a really strong claim we will look into when the first of the Mitsubishi’s arrive for review. The HC7900DW is brighter than its predecessor, now claiming 1500 lumens. That’s a real plus, due to the need for a bright projector for 3D which loses roughly 75% of brightness compared to 2D. Black levels should improve based on a new, higher 150,000:1 contrast ratio.

Mitsubishi sees the HC7900DW as a versatile projector, usable in family rooms, or theaters. They also talk up their lamp life which they say will last up to 5000 hours. This HC7900DW will be available from local dealers and online dealers while our next subject, the HC8000D is targeting the home theater.

Sporting 1300 lumens, the HC8000 is also 3D capable (glasses optional), with Mitsubishi offering proprietary 3D glasses they demonstrated were brighter than the universal glasses that are also compatible. This will allow some folks who have them, to bring their glasses to your house to watch 3D, so you won’t need to buy as many pair of your own. An interesting selling point!

A 330,000:1 contrast ratio should insure impressive “ultra-high contrast black levels”. How good? Wait for the review. It is available only from local authorized Mitsubishi dealers, as has been tradition with Mitsubishi with their top of the line projectors.

That’s it for now. -art

Greetings all,

These changes to Projector Reviews, have been a long time in coming. Check out the new home page. It builds on the theme changes we started last summer.

Here’s a quick overview of what we’ve done, why, and how it should make your visits and navigation, more effective.

The obvious change to Projector Reviews, is that we have converted the center column to use a system of Panes. There are currently six different Panes. Each has it’s own square button, just below the masthead. Clicking on any of those buttons will load the appropriate page, and leave it up, until you click on another pane button, or a link, or…

By the way, you can also pause the panes by placing the cursor over the pane content. You can then, for example scroll down the page, reading everything in that pane. Moving the cursor out of the content area, will resume the auto pane rotation feature.

The very first pane is our Projector Reviews pane. That is, it shows you the 10 most recent home theater projector reviews, followed by the 10 most recent reviews of Business and Education projectors. Within the next week or so, the descriptions of each of those reviews will be expanded to resemble the 3-4 lines for each, found on the old home page.

Other panes show excerpts from the most recent blog entries. There are the portions of the 10 most recent press releases for new projectors, and the 5 most recent home theater blogs.

Still another pane features our major reports and articles, including, of course, our annual Home Theater Projector Comparison Report, Our Pico Projector Comparison, and our K-12 Classroom Education Projector Report.

Next comes the Projector Categories. learn more about projectors in categories such as DLP projectors, education projectors, pico projectors, home theater projectors and more. Each category offers you descriptions and links to that category’s most recent reviews.

Finally, we’ve put together a brief on each of 15 well known and most popular projector manufacturers. We’ll be expanding that section over the coming months. BTW please note, some of the descriptions in that pane are temporary, written by a webmaster, and not fully accurate. (As of right now, the LG Projector description would be an example).

Click on any of those manufacturers and you’ll end up on our page for that brand. You’ll find all of our reviews for that line listed, and below that, a full list of all models with links to specs and data sheets. Have fun.

Please forgive, there will be a good bit of clean up, and many dozens of pages needed to be created for all the changes. If you see anything that really makes no sense (like almost anything that FORMER webmaster wrote), feel free to comment. There’s a lot for us to do, and now we’re backed up on reviews!

One more thing. You don’t need to use the Panes to navigate. Note, in the masthead, there are a number of white pull-down tabs for navigation. They will get you to the same places, although we don’t have tabs yet for the blogs. -art

PS. for those waiting, the Viewsonic Pro8200 review will post sometime tonight before I call it a night. -a

New Runco Projectors Set the Bar for 1080p 3-chip Performance

Adding to its successful LightStyle Series, the LS-10i and LS-10d offer design, technology and brightness at value pricing.

Beaverton, OR – September 14, 2010 – Runco®, the leading brand in luxury display solutions, today announced that it is expanding its LightStyleTM Series with two new 3-chip DLP®, 1080p projectors; the LS-10d and LS-10i. Designed to excel in both the dedicated theater as well as other rooms in the home, such as media rooms, basements, dens, these new Runco projectors deliver uncompromised 1080p 3-chip video performance at an astounding value.

Runco’s LightStyle Series projectors are a testament to Runco’s craftsmanship and video quality, and the new additions enable Runco to broaden the series with its highest resolution, most advanced performance options yet. Combining technology, design and brightness, the LS-10 projectors are not only powerhouse solutions for the dedicated home theater, but also boast performance and brightness to excel in other rooms of the home where very large, expensive, power-guzzling flat-screen TVs have traditionally been considered the only solution for large-screen viewing. Other rooms that are ideal for the LS-10 include the media room, basement, den, bonus or living spaces. The LS-10 boasts flawless HD imagery, practical integration features, and a sophisticated design that has won critical acclaim for its ability to complement any room’s decor.

“With this new affordable 3-chip, 1080p projector the LightStyle Series now offers a complete gamut of stylish and accessible projection solutions with the legendary quality and craftsmanship that is synonymous with the Runco brand,” said Jennifer Davis, vice president of marketing for Runco. “The Runco LS-10 projectors offer a no compromise 3-chip, 1080p, full high-definition solution that fits the needs of today’s homeowner in both performance and price.”

Runco’s LightStyle Series combines state-of-the-art DLPTM-based SuperOnyxTM technology with Runco ConstantContrastTM and VivixTM image enhancement and proprietary video processing to achieve deep black levels and significant contrast. Both incorporate the ISFTM (Imaging Science Foundation) calibration suite for optimal performance in any room making Runco’s LS-10 projectors ideal for rooms beyond the dedicated home theater. These calibration tools feature day and night calibration memory settings, individual sharpness and noise reduction controls, programmable image memory selection keys, built-in test patterns and a dark room-optimized remote.

“The LS-10 projectors from Runco close a gap in the channel and satisfy needs with both installers and customers with its incredible performance and outstanding value,” said Ward Pitkin, Manager, 3-Chip projectors for Texas Instruments. “We are proud to be able to continue our outstanding relationship with Runco and continue to provide the most cutting edge technologies for the home theater market.”

The LS-10i features Runco’s legendary internal video processing for exceptional scaling and analog to digital signal conversion. The LS-10d ships with Runco’s award-winning Digital High-Definition (DHD) external video processor offering the same processing and scaling as well as IR and RS-232 control and enables individual display calibration through the controller. Designed as a rack-mounted external processor, the DHD offers advanced connectivity options as well as installation flexibility because it can be located next to, and connect directly to, all other source components with a single-wire connection from the DHD to the projector, making it an ideal solution for retrofit installs.

The LS-10 projectors are available with Runco’s new CineGlideTM lens solution that enables a motorized, mechanical 2.35:1 anamorphic lens to move in front of the standard lens for perfect Scope reproduction. Runco CineGlide enables the viewer to switch from 16:9 content to 2.35:1 content, without black bars on the top or side of the image, with the touch of a button.

Its sleek, glamorous design and customization options make the Runco LightStyle Series projectors the perfect solution to pair with a design-conscious homeowner. Both the LS-10i and LS-10d can be customized with Runco’s FinishPaletteTM, the latest element of the Design by RuncoTM initiative. Runco’s FinishPalette enables full-color, large-format projector design options, including licensed logos from your favorite NCAA® collegiate sports programs, a gallery of artist impressions and the option to custom-print your own artwork. Complementing the new FinishPalette offering are 25 new, hand-finished signature paint colors to compliment any décor.

3D CINEMA COMES HOME WITH SONY’S NEW SXRD FRONT PROJECTOR

Company’s First “Elevated Standard” Projector Integrates Seamlessly with Third-party Control Systems

ATLANTA, Sept. 23, 2010 (CEDIA Booth #1112) –Sony today brings the big-screen 3D cinematic experience home with the new the VPL-VW90ES – the company’s first 3D front projector.

Designed with the custom and specialty consumer electronics market in mind, the VPL-VW90ES is the first projector to be been branded with Sony’s “Elevated Standard” (ES) moniker, signifying an emphasis on high build quality and outstanding video experience. It was also engineered to integrate seamlessly third-party control systems.

“Delivering on Sony’s promise of innovation, the VW90ES brings the 3D big screen theater home with another stunning full HD, sub-$10,000 home cinema projector,”said Brian Siegel, vice president of Sony’s home audio and video business. “Sony understands the 3D ecosystem better than any manufacturer so dealers and installers can count on Sony products to deliver the best possible 3D experience”

“The VW90ES also shares the heritage of previously acclaimed Sony SXRD projectors delivering incredible 2D performance that rivals any competition in the class,” he added.

The Silicon X-tal Reflective Display (SXRD™) full HD (1920 x 1080) projector delivers film-like performance with Sony’s 24p True Cinema™. It incorporates frame sequential 3D technology with active-shutter glasses that work together with Sony’s proprietary 240Hz high frame rate technology, the projector delivers smooth, full high-definition 3D images.

The new 240 Hz high frame rate drive supports to minimize cross talk for minimal image distortion, the projector delivers an unrivalled 3D and 2D high definition cinematic experience. Additionally, the projector uses a single Ultra High Performance (UHP) lamp that drives brightness of 1,000 ANSI lumens and delivers a sharp, deep black picture thanks to Sony’s Advanced Iris 3™ technology that helps to produce a dynamic contrast ratio of 150,000:1.

Sony’s ES audio and video products not only deliver outstanding sound and picture quality; they are built to seamlessly integrate with third-party control systems. Sony has worked closely with major custom home theater control companies ensuring that drivers are available and accurate. The VPL-VW90ES is no different as it joins an elite list of Sony products that integrate easily with leading home automation systems including Control4, Crestron, AMX®, Savant, Ultimate Remote Control, RTI, Vantage, and others. The projector is also Control4 Certified and includes an AMX Device Discovery Beacon.

The projector does not require a special screen so it can be easily placed in existing home theaters with minimal revision to the set up making it ideal for retrofit projects. It includes two pair of Sony active shutter 3D glasses that are also compatible with Sony’s 3D capable BRAVIA HDTVS.

The VPL-VW90ES SXRD 3D front projector will be available in November for about $10,000 through Sony authorized installers and specialty dealers around the country. It will come equipped with two pair of Sony active shutter 3D glasses and a built in 3D transmitter.

Until now, JVC projectors have been priced at or above $5000 MSRP, making them too expensive for some home theater projector consumers to consider. But JVC has now introduced the new DLA-HD250, with an MSRP of only $2,995! We have always loved JVC for its blacker blacks and currently have a RS20 in our dedicated home theater. But we have often wished for a brighter picture to allow for its use when we have more ambient light to contend with. The new DLA-HD250 also boasts 1000 lumens, making it ideal for these brighter environments!

Press Release

JVC UNVEILS ENTRY-LEVEL D-ILA HOME THEATER PROJECTOR

ATLANTA, September 23, 2010 – JVC U.S.A. today introduced a low-cost home theater projector that for the first time provides advanced D-ILA technology at an entry-level price. The new projector, to be marketed as the DLA-HD250 by JVC Consumer and the DLA-HD250Pro by JVC Professional, is priced below $3,000 and delivers 25,000:1 native contrast ratio and 1,000 ANSI lumens brightness.

The DLA-HD250/250Pro features three 0.7-inch 1920×1080 D-ILA devices for a naturally rich, flicker-free picture with true blacks and extraordinary luminance detail. Combined with JVC’s wire-grid optical engine, the new projector provides outstanding native contrast – without a dynamic iris to artificially inflate contrast specifications. Plus, an advanced HQV Reon-VX video processor by Silicon Optix ensures excellent image reproduction with precision I/P conversion and scaling.

Other features include a high-performance 2x motorized zoom lens with auto dust cover, as well as on-screen, customizable gamma control and ultra-quiet (19dB) operation. While ideal for use in a dedicated home theater, the DLA-HD250/250Pro is also suitable for brighter environments, such as great rooms or bar and restaurant installations, thanks to its 1,000 lumens of brightness.

“JVC projectors have been widely acclaimed for their performance, but they’ve remained out of reach for home theater enthusiasts with a limited budget,” said Gary Klasmeier, product engineering manager, D-ILA Systems, JVC Professional Products. “With this new projector we bring D-ILA’s remarkable film-like image quality and impressive native contrast to an entirely new market segment.”

The DLA-HD250/250Pro will be available later this month for $2,995. It carries a two-year warranty.

JVC INTRODUCES 3D-ENABLED D-ILA HOME THEATER PROJECTORS WITH UP TO 100,000:1 NATIVE CONTRAST RATIO

Six New Models Announced at CEDIA 2010

ATLANTA, September 23, 2010 – JVC U.S.A. today unveiled six new 3D-enabled D-ILA projectors here at CEDIA EXPO 2010. All six host native contrast ratios that are unmatched in the industry, with the top models delivering a 100,000:1 native contrast ratio.

The new projectors are the Reference Series DLA-RS60, DLA-RS50 and DLA-RS40, to be marketed by JVC’s Professional Products Group, and the Procision Series DLA-X9, DLA-X7 and DLA-X3, to be available through JVC’s Consumer Electronics Group.

“3D has recently become a major box office draw. Now, with 3D broadcast channels emerging, and a growing number of 3D Blu-ray titles available, consumers want the immersive 3D experience in their homes,” said Gary Klasmeier, product engineering manager, D-ILA Systems, JVC Professional Products. “Our new line of D-ILA projectors sets a new standard for home cinema. It’s an immersive home 3D viewing experience.”

For 3D content, each projector includes two HDMI 1.4a ports and supports side-by-side (broadcast), frame series (Blu-ray), and above-below 3D transmissions. An external 3D Signal Emitter (PK-EM1) syncs the projected image with JVC’s Active Shutter 3D Glasses (PK-AG1). The external 3D signal emitter ensures solid signal transmission to the 3D glasses for a superior 3D experience, no matter what type of screen is used or how the home theater has been configured.

The new flagship projectors, the DLA-RS60 and DLA-X9, are built using hand-selected, hand-tested components and provide a 100,000:1 native contrast ratio. For 3D display, both models come with two pairs of 3D glasses along with a PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter. Both projectors also have a three-year warranty.

“No other three-chip projectors in the home theater market can match the amazing 100,000:1 native contrast ratio of the DLA-RS60 or DLA-X9,” said Klasmeier. “JVC’s contrast ratio numbers are not artificially inflated by electronic circuitry or a dynamic iris, so every frame consistently and faithfully reproduces peak whites and deep blacks.”

The DLA-RS50 and DLA-X7 offer 70,000:1 native contrast ratio, while the DLA-RS40 and DLA-X3 offer 50,000:1 native contrast ratio. All four projectors come with a two-year warranty and are compatible with JVC’s PK-AG1 Active Shutter 3D Glasses and PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter (sold separately) for 3D presentations.

All six new projectors feature three 0.7” 1920 x 1080 D-ILA devices and are designed around JVC’s third generation D-ILA High Dynamic Range optical engine that is optimized to provide exceptional native contrast ratios without a dynamic iris to artificially enhance contrast specifications. A directed light integration system and wire grid polarizer ensures optimum light uniformity and minimal crosstalk in the light path. In the top four models (DLA-RS60, DLA-RS50, DLA-X9, DLA-X7) a 16-step lamp aperture system matches the 16-step lens aperture to optimize the f-number (relative aperture) of the optics system in all steps. The DLA-RS40 and DLA-X3 feature a 16-step lens aperture.

With a new short arc gap, lamp brightness has been increased from earlier JVC models to 1,300 ANSI lumens. To reduce motion blur, JVC’s double-speed 120Hz Clear Motion Drive technology uses a newly developed LSI for frame interpolation black frame insertion.

The four top models – DLA-X7/DLA-RS50 and DLA-X9/DLA-RS60 – have been designed to achieve THX® certification and are in the process of being tested by THX.

These same four models also include a new seven-axis color management system (R, G, B, C, M, Y and orange) that allows precise color tuning, especially in skin tones, and a choice of color profiles, including Adobe RGB, DCI and sRGB/HDTV. They have also been designed for ISF certification and will include an ISF C3 mode for professional calibration. Ninety-nine screen correction modes help to maximize viewing environments.

All six models share a completely new design, with a center-mounted lens and rear power, signal and control connectors for improved cable management and more versatile positioning and mounting options. Rear-to-front airflow also allows more placement flexibility while reducing thermal concerns.

The new JVC D-ILA projectors will be available in late November at the following prices:

DLA-RS60/DLA-X9 $11,995

DLA-RS50/DLA-X7 $7,995

DLA-RS40/DLA-X3 $4,495

JVC’s PK-AG1 3D glasses ($179) and PK-EM1 3D Signal Emitter ($79) will also be available in late November.

Sanyo Introduces a New 120 Hz Full HD LCD Front Projector With Topaz Real HD and Color Management System

120 Hz Full HD panel produces artifact-free motion and is 1080p/24 capable

CHATSWORTH, CA.— April 28, 2010 – SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), a subsidiary of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers of LCD and DLP projectors, announces the introduction of the PLV-Z4000, a high-performance 120 Hz Full HD 3 LCD front projector with 1080p24 capability for an exquisite home theater and HD video experience. With SANYO’s exclusive TopazReal HD system, the projector produces superb image quality and has a 3D color management system that enables extraordinary color accuracy. Through dual HDMI 1.3b inputs, it is Deep Color and x.v.Color capable. Rated at 1,200 ANSI lumens, with a 65,000:1 contrast ratio, it produces superb black levels even in ambient light conditions. The addition of installer-friendly mounting and optical features allow it to be used in a wide variety of rooms and environments. Scheduled for release at the end of May 2010, the SANYO PLV-Z4000 will have an MSRP of $2,495.

With its exclusive 3D color management system, SANYO’s TopazReal HD system melds several advanced technologies to create superb optical performance and a sharp and highly accurate image. The system uses 14-bit digital signal processing and a real-focus HD lens system that combines variable iris and lamp reactivity with a newly-developed high efficiency lens. The 3D color management system addresses changes in color phase and color level to produce near-perfect color reproduction, taking full advantage of the Deep Color and x.v.Color capabilities of the projector through its dual HDMI 1.3b inputs. Approximately 216 billion color combinations are possible.

With a 3LCD design that uses inorganic liquid crystal panels, motion blur and artifacts are virtually eliminated by doubling the input frame rate from 60 to 120 frames per second. Special interpolation frame generation technology determines the motion differences between frames, and through interpolation, generates new frames to fill the gaps between the original frames. The result is improved resolution and a smooth presentation, even with fast moving sports action. The projector is also capable of displaying an HD source from film material in its native 24 frame/second rate with full 1080p/24 resolution.

“The high performance achieved by our TopazReal technology makes this projector an extraordinary value in today’s home theater projector market,” says Sam Malik, Vice President and General Manager of the Presentation Technologies Group in the Consumer Solutions Division of SANYO North America Corporation. “The PLV-Z4000’s ability to display very high resolution artifact-free images with superb color accuracy, while being easy to install in any home theater environment, make it a great choice from the standpoint of both consumers and installers.”

Thanks to thoughtful design, the projector offers ultra flexibility to installers when using with a mount. With the industry’s most advanced lens shifting capability, the PLV-Z4000 allows the projector to be placed or installed in a number of settings, as images can be shifted vertically up to three screen sizes, and horizontally up to two screen sizes. Its short throw capability and 2x zoom functions allow a large image in virtually any size room and from most any mounting location. Ideal for small to mid-sized home theater environments, it can project a 100-inch diagonal image from between 10 and 20 feet away.

Unwanted noise produced by the projector is kept to an extraordinarily low 19dB through its use of a large aperture, low noise Sirocco cooling fan, allowing it to be mounted near viewers without special baffling to reduce noise. Its eco-friendly design requires minimal power consumption, drawing just 0.3 watts in eco-standby mode. A three-year parts and labor warranty covers the projector, with 90 day coverage on the original lamp.
