Canon REALiS WUX10 High Resolution Projector - Review Summary

A summary of the Canon WUX10 projector's pros, cons, and typical capabilities.

The Canon REALiS WUX10 projector.

Canon REALiS WUX10 Projector: Bottom Line

In the WUXGA arena, there are currently few choices. You can have any technology you want, as long as it’s DLP. Enter the Canon WUX10, the first LCoS-based WUXGA projector. Making full use of the LCoS advantages of striking colors and high pixel fill factor, the WUX10 provides a nice balance of performance, features and price. Its picture quality, sharpness and depth of color are second to none, making it an attractive choice for the medical profession or for display of complex engineering CAD drawings.

While not as light as some other projectors View of the Canon REALiS WUX10 projector.(usually lower resolution ones), the WUX10’s 11 lb. weight is still quite manageable and it comes with a well-designed carrying bag that has pockets for the remote and cables.

Compared to its competitors, the WUX10’s price fits nicely between the more expensive Digital Projection offerings and the price leading Dell 7609WU. While some of the competition offers greater brightness and most offer higher contrast ratios, the WUX10’s sharpness and color purity is hard to beat. It’s also very sturdily constructed and should hold up well even with frequent transport.

Bottom Line: Overall, the WUX10 is a very impressive projector. It’s bright enough for use in a room with even marginal light control and presents a image that would easily satisfy the precision demands of engineering, medical or graphic design customers. Color accuracy is very good, better than with most business projectors.

Editor's note: After discussing with Mike, we concluded that it really made sense to award the Canon WUX10 projector our Special Interest award. There are too few WUXGA projectors out there (and this is our first review of one), and a wide range of prices (all expensive). We didn't feel we could judge it against the competition, so the Special Interest award makes more sense.

Because of the high price, this is a specialty projector - for now. It will mostly be aquired by people working with extremely high resolution computers, perhaps a lot of engineering applications, architecture, scientific modeling, etc. Also, the Canon projectors are highly regarded by those (professional?) photographers looking for a projector to display their photographs. We really good color, only black levels might be an issue to a photographer.
