Epson PowerLite 435w Appearance
Short throw projectors, like the Epson PowerLite 435W, have very unique lenses that allow for such large image sizes even when the projector is just a few feet away from the screen. You will notice the lens of the PowerLite 435W is large, and has a fish-eye lens like appearance. Just about all short throw projectors have this similar look. Above the lens you will find a fine focus knob. One thing to remember about short throw projectors is that the image size is determined by how far you place the projector from the screen, or how close it is to the screen. You then just use the fine focus to sharpen the image.
Moving to the top rear of the projector you will find the control panel. The projectors functions can all be controlled via the control panel, but it certainly is much easier to navigate the menu system with the remote.
On left side of the projector you will find the air intake and filter cover. Right behind the cover you will find the filter that in this unit can be easily replaced or cleaned. The Epson PowerLite 435W has a longer filter cleaning cycle of 5000 hours. So, ultimately, it will be a long time before you have to change the filter. One should still inspect the filter from time to time just to make sure it is not too clogged. On the opposite side you will find the vent. It is recommended you use a small keyboard vacuum or a small paint brush from time to time to clean the area so proper air venting can take place.
On the bottom of the projector you will find one adjustable foot in the front, and two feet in the in the rear. Moving to the rear of the projector we find all the inputs and outputs. Starting from the left you will see a HDMI port and then below that a RS-232 port for command and control of the projectors functions. To the right of the HDMI port is a S-video port. Below that you will find your standard composite video port and the LR audio inputs. Outputs are below. One mic output and one monitor out. The projector also features 2 standard vga inputs to accept a signal from your laptop. To accompany the two vga inputs you also have corresponding inputs for sound via 2, 3.5mm mini dim jacks. The Epson can also receive a signal via your laptop or desktop by way of USB Type B cable. If you also want to present via your compact flash card there is a USB Type A input.
The Epson PowerLite 435W is networkeable either via the RJ-45 port or through a add-on module you can connect the projector to the network wirelessly. The module easily installs right next to the vacant spot next to the 16 watt speaker.
Setup and Menus
Setup of the projector was quite simple and only took about 5 minutes. Essentially the time is spent leveling the projector and moving it around the room until the desired image is reached. The projector does come with three adjustable feet so squaring up the image is quick and painless. The projector does have keystone correction, but it is always recommended to position projector so the image is square, rather than use keystone correction, since it degrades image quality. Should be no problem to manually square the image though.
The internal menu system was very clearly laid out and although it is word like interface instead of graphic driven, it still should be easy enough to navigate even for people new to using projectors. ECO Mode was tricky to find, but if you go to the setting screen and look for "Power Consumption" then you can easily change to ECO Mode.
The Epson remote is compact, but feature rich. Epson remotes are typically well laid out and the 435W remote is no exception. The layout is well organized so finding your way around the menu system should be pretty easy. The real advantages are being able to change sources and color modes quickly without having to enter the menu system.
