JVC DLA-RS60 Projector Calibration and Settings

Mike performed his usual measurements and calibration, and for once we were truly surprised - by the brightness. Here's what we measured, and what Mike did to optimize the picture:

3/21/11

JVC DLA-RS60 Color Temperature

Lumen Output and Color Temp at 100 IRE (white) at mid zoom:

Film= 351 @ 6024
Cinema= 383 @ 6725
Animation= 506 @ 8531
Natural= 500 @ 6829
Stage= 500 @ 7955
3D= 507 @ 8997
THX= 497 @ 6828
User 1 or 2= 500 @ 6820

The core "best" modes Cinema and THX, both, out-of-the-box, were actually a bit further from the ideal 6500K than I would have expected from JVC, but then those numbers were still excellent for out-of-the-box.

A quick look from dark gray to white for the 6500K setting reveals this for the two best modes (remember, JVC doesn't give you access to adjust all the controls in THX mode):

Color Temp over IRE Range (Pre calibration):

                      Cinema              THX

30 IRE            6238                 6431
50 IRE            6544                 6696
80 IRE            6805                 6959
100 IRE          6725                 6828

In both cases, the projector is shifting slightly from warm in the darker ranges to slightly cool by the time white is achieved. After calibration, it ends up about as close to dead on as one sees.

Post Calibration Color Temperature

Color Temp over IRE Range (Post calibration):

20 IRE            6494
30 IRE            6515
40 IRE            6472
50 IRE            6513
60 IRE            6565
70 IRE            6605
80 IRE            6633
90 IRE            6547
100 IRE          6490

Brightness for these measurements: 451 lumens (lamp on high, zoom at mid)
Gamma for these measurements: 2.10

The highest gamma I could achieve without getting into the custom gamma controls was 2.06, which is not real good. (2.2 considered optimum for today's projectors)

JVC DLA-RS60 Calibration Settings

What's most interesting is not the actual results themselves, but that the settings required relatively coarse adjustments, in terms of the numbers, compared to previous models. On the other hand, the projector starts out looking really good, so perhaps it's just that they've given us finer tuning by magnifying the working range for a small change.
