Optoma TW610ST Projector Overview

The Optoma TW610ST projector is a short throw WXGA (1280 X 800) DLP projector that is perfect for the presenter who needs to point out items on the screen, without disturbing the image, or where interactive use with a whiteboard is desired.  The TW610ST is able to project an 80” diagonal image from only 3 feet (front of projector to screen), hence the “short throw” designation.   Similar to last year’s runner up for Best in Classroom, BenQ MP772 ST, the TW610ST uses a fixed normal lens projecting through a second, convex lens.  As a result of using a fixed lens, there is no zooming (only digital zooming on the image), requiring the projector to be placed at the proper distance for the screen size desired, as well as at the proper height.  The TW610ST features a “Help” screen that can be activated by a button on the remote to assist with any problem that might occur during setup.

The TW610ST features a lower noise level than much of the competition and combined with its built-in 10 watt (two 5-watt speakers) sound, there is no need for external speakers in most installations.  There is also a microphone input for the presenter to easily reach all attendees.

The Optoma TW610ST is 3-D ready, incorporating Texas Instruments' DLP-Link technology.

The TW610ST’s light weight (6.9 lbs.) and compact size makes it a good choice for mounting on a movable cart, where one could move from room to room.   As we’ll see in the review to follow, the Optoma TW610ST’s combination of high brightness, good contrast, very good color accuracy, great warranty and low price makes it deserve serious consideration in the K-12 education market.
