The Art of Home Theater Projectors

JVC DLA-X95R Projector – About as good as 2K Projectors Get…More:

Greetings, just a quick heads up. As previous reported, the JVC DLA-X95R home theater projector is here, and under review. This $11,999 projector is simply an X75R but with hand selected components.
It’s calibrated, I’ve watched 50 plus hours so far, and started writing up the review last evening. It will publish this week, maybe tomorrow night, probably Friday.
Additional news: JVC just advised that they just shipped us their “entry level” DLA-X35 projector. That will be my next review, and last full review before I start on the annual Home Theater Projector Comparison Report.
Finally, I’m trying to bring in a new Acer H9500BD. When we reviewed (and really liked it, our biggest complaint was a minimal Color Management System, preventing a great calibration. As reported since then, Acer has expanded it into a full CMS. I would like to calibrate a new one, update our review, and see how it compares in this year’s report (it was a Best In Class winner last year.

    Hi Art,

We’ve exchanged some correspondence regarding the Acer H9500BD. I, and others, pushed Acer long and hard to update the firmware and, eventually, they did. I also offered to bring mine down to you if you wanted to do a calibration on it. That offer still stands. I have what I consider to be a very solid unit and extra pairs of the Acer 3D glasses.

If you’re interested, I can take a couple of days off work (pretty much at your convenience) and spend a couple of days on a mini vacation with my wife. I’d like to learn a little bit about calibration out of the deal and would want to bring my PJ back with me.

Let me know if that’s something you might be interested in doing.

    My email address is cloud@cts.ucla.edu

      Hi Lindey,
Curiously, I hadn’t planned on this, but I have an H9500BD here that Acer just sent me a week or so ago. And I did just have it calibrated. Looks pretty good. I’ll share the settings numbers with you, if you like.

We’re redesigning the site. In the new one, launching May/June, we’ll have a subscriber area. The H9500BD is one of the projectors that we are also calibrating the individual colors. We’ve not done that until this past fall. So, come June, all of the extra numbers will be available only to subscribers. I’ll give you a peek.
As to your mini-vacation, sorry, I have to pass. I just don’t have time, and I’m not your person. While I have some calibration skills I never enjoyed doing calibrations. Mike does the calibrations for all the reviews, not me. -art PS. I thought you’d find someone at UCLA photography or other groups that could calibrate it. -a

I a person wants to save money on 3D glasses many low priced RF 2012 glasses will work with the JVC. The $19.99 Samsung glass are one example.

      Thanks Richard!

Hi Art. Will you be publishing the H9500BD calibration settings as an addendum to your review, or will we have to wait until the new site is launched to see the numbers? I think this particular projector still has a huge amount of interest on the AVS forum, especially with recent price drops.

Thanks for all your advice and efforts. They are well-respected and appreciated.

      Hi Don,

Really I just have to get around to putting up the “normal” numbers that we always do. Only the calibration of the individual colors will wait until the new site launches. I still find the Acer “a little rough around the edges” but it sure provides a lot of performance for the bucks.
