Epson Extends North America Projector Market Leadership to 34 Percent Market Share – Press Release

April 17th, 2013 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

Epson just published this press release, touting their market share of projector sales in the US.  We’ll if I was a projector manufacturer and my numbers looked this good, I’d be shouting from the rooftops as well.  Their numbers are based on Pacific Media Associates tracking.  Some of you may be familiar with PMA as we do post some of their press releases as well.  PMA has been tracking the projector market going back to at least the mid-late 1990s, basically my early dealer days before Projector Reviews.  Back in those days my company, Presenting Solutions,  like most of the other large dealers in the industry at the time, would report monthly sales, model by model to PMA.
I do get an occasional inquiry from readers asking why we review so many Epson projectors, or why they seem to win more awards than most other brands.  I think these numbers from PMA help explain that.  Epson operates, and is a major player in every projector market segment except for pico projectors.  Further they “play” in some market segments where almost none do, so they have more products in more categories for us to consider.  Currently it seems Epson is manufacturing about 50 different models.  Of note, they the only seller of “all-in-one” projectors (since Optoma stopped), such as their Megaplex MG850 with iPad dock, and also have offered integrated systems such as the old Epson Ensemble, their new Brightlink 1410wi (commercial interactive system with projector, whiteboard, and control system, and also their new W16SK, which is a dual stack projector for bright 3D in the classroom that uses low cost passive glasses.   49% of the home theater projector market?  And they do seem to be dominating player when it comes to interactive projectors as well.  That is impressive.

PMA Research Posts Top-Selling Projector Models For February – Press Release

March 31st, 2013 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

Pacific Media Associates has been tracking US (really North American) sales for more than and a half!  Our previous company, presentingsolutions.com was one of about fifty larger dealers, that reported to Pacific Media back in the day.  Although other research companies now report on similar data, PMA always had their pulse on which projector models were the top sellers in every category.   This is their latest press release, showing the top sellers in three categories:

High End Projectors (bright, interchangeable lenses)
Mainstream (the typical portable and small fixed install projectors)
Pico and Pocket projectors
Not a whole lot of surprises in the list, with Epson dominating the high end sales, Hitachi who has long been the leader in education sales scores the top selling unit among the mainstream.  Optoma dominates the “tiny” projector category, which is interesting.  Optoma has long been the biggest player with the most extensive line of pico projectors, but considering the vast number of new players in “pico and pocket” space, that they have held on is what is impressive.

Worldwide Projector Market to Hit 9.5 Million Units in 2013 According to Latest Forecast from PMA Research – Press Release

March 31st, 2013 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:
The folks at Pacific Media Associates have been tracking projector sales world wide for well more than a decade.  Below in their press release you can get a feel for how different segments of the projector market are doing.  This particular release from PMA does not discuss home theater projectors, but does include pico and pocket projector numbers along with numbers for other categories.

Press Release

Worldwide Projector Market to Hit 9.5 Million Units in 2013 According to Latest Forecast from PMA Research
San Juan Capistrano, California, USA – March 28, 2013. PMA Research (PMA), the worldwide market information experts on front projectors, has released their latest quarterly forecast for the worldwide projector market. According to PMA, total worldwide projector shipments are expected to reach 9.5 million units in 2013. While to overall market is likely to trend up modestly from 2012, there are some areas of anticipated higher growth.

In the New Era segment (sub-1,000 Lumens), pico projectors recovered strongly in the second half of 2012, gaining 35% vs. the second half of 2011. PMA expects similar growth for these models this year, particularly for the very popular iPhone “sled” models. The success of these models may inspire the introduction of similar projectors for Android Smartphones such as the Galaxy S IV.

In the Mainstream segment (1,000 – 3,999 Lumens), PMA boosted their outlook for ultra-short-throw projectors in large part due to expected tenders in the Middle East as well as steady gains in the rest of the world. In addition, medium-short-throw models are expected to do well in China where they are being coupled with low-cost whiteboards. Solid State Illumination (SSI) models are also expected to outperform the overall projector market as well. New entrants into the SSI market and second-generation models which target mid-level price ranges will contribute to SSI growth.

Despite the sluggish economic recovery in 2012, conference room and large venue segments (excluding d-cinema) showed about 10% growth, and similar growth is expected to continue through 2013. Most of this growth was seen in the US and Western Europe. Even higher growth was seen in many developing countries, albeit on a smaller volume base. Since this segment remains somewhat immune to the competition from flat panels, expected improvements in corporate and higher education spending should benefit these projector segments in the coming year. Epson Ships 80 Millionth HTPS Panel for 3LCD Projectors – Press Release

July 2nd, 2012 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

“So, what does this mean to our readers:  80 millionth HTPS Panel?

That’s pretty easy, actually, as it tells you about how many 3LCD (or LCD) projectors have shipped – and as indicated dividing by 3 (three LCD panels per projector), you get about 26 million 3LCD projectors.

Let’s put that in perspective:   While these millions have been sold over more than a decade, the vast majority of them should have been sold in the last decade.  Of course many of those may be obsolete, and no longer used (in 2001, most projectors were VGA or SVGA, with few XGA and no widescreen models around), the largest buyer of projectors is believed to be the education market, where getting 10 years out of a projector tends to be more a matter of finances and survival, than technology issues.  As such, many of those 5-8-10, even 12 year old projectors are still in use.

Let’s say half of those 26.5 million projectors are still in active use (a wild guess).   That requires some perspective:

The easiest would be to compare to the popular Apple iPad.  Estimates say about 40 million Apple iPads were sold going into 2012.  So, sure, there are a lot more iPads than 3LCD projectors out there, but, when you consider that you see iPads everywhere, and rarely see a projector, the number of LCD projectors is still a rather huge number.  For perspective, it would only take about 2 million 3LCD projectors to have one in every classroom in the US.

Of course the 80 million panels number is world wide, not US only.  Still…   As a side note, by far the largest quantity of 3LCD projectors produced are used for education and commercial/business applications.  Home theater projectors, by comparison are a very small market.”

3LCD Group Debuts New SID Color Performance Standard at InfoComm – Press Release

June 18th, 2012 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

Last week, the SID (Society for Informational Display) published a revolutionary Color Light Output Standard document. Quoted in this Press Release from the 3LCD Group, our editor Art Feierman, says, A color light output specification should be of real benefit to users, and those responsible for projector selection, and makes it possible to properly compare different projector technologies. Many projectors produce a hefty amount of white lumens, but come up very short when trying to produce rich, accurate colors.”  Read on for more information from 3LCD:

New Color Performance Standard to Revolutionize Projector Purchase Criteria

Society for Information Display Publishes Groundbreaking Color Light Output Standard

Las Vegas (InfoComm, Booth #C5115), June 13, 2012 – The projector market has been in existence for more than two decades and almost 60 million projectors have been sold for use in schools, theaters, homes and businesses.  During this time, superior image quality has consistently been at the top of the purchase criteria list in every market and until now, there has been no standardized specification to measure the color performance in displays.

Last week, a revolutionary document was released by the Society for Information Display (SID), a highly respected, global professional organization dedicated to the development of the display industry. The International Display Measurement Standard (IDMS) document outlines standardized measurement methodologies for displays, including projectors.  After extensive research and evaluation, the SID concluded that a color performance standard was scientifically valid and relevant for the display industry and included the methodology in the IDMS. This measurement tool (referred to by the SID as color light output), will provide consumers with a specification to evaluate color performance, a critical aspect of image quality.
