Mitsubishi Introduces LaserVue Projector Models, NW31U-EST, NW30U, NF32U – Press Release

Mitsubishi NW31U-EST projector

Comments by Projector Reviews:

Mitsubishi is about to start shipping 3 new projectors – all sporting Mitsubishi’s new Laser light source.  They are claiming a better way of creating a laser light engine, and that’s always good.  We’ll let you know as we review at least one of the three.
The first to ship will ship in April.  That’s the base NW31U with an very short throw lens, WXGA (1280×800) resolution, and 2500 lumens.  Shipping closer to summer are two additional models, one very similar but 3000 lumens, and the last, again similar, 3000 lumens, but full 1080p resolution..
In going over the press release, it’s not the  laser light engine that is most interesting, rather the expansion of sources to include “the cloud”.
Of course the “cloud” in its own right is sort of hard to pin down.  Technically any accessible shared remote server can be defined as being part of the cloud.  So let’s stick to the basics.  Here are three new projectors that can run programs (such as Powerpoint) from a network server – no local computer needed.  That’s not unique, but less common than you might think.
And if your remote server is arguably “in the cloud”, then well, it can present from the cloud.
That’s all there is to it.   If it’s your server, then it’s your “private cloud” if you are presenting a presentation that you stored on Googles, or Apple’s or someone else’s “cloud” then, bingo,   That you can also control the presentation with wifi connected devices such as iPhones and iPads, Androids… adds some additional flexibility and convenience.
We are hoping to include the NW31U in this year’s education projector comparison report.  It depends if Mitsubishi can get us a unit before April 1 (before their official ship date).  These sure sound interesting, so I am hoping we will receive it in time, so that our education projector buyers are aware, before their purchase cycle shifts from “choosing the projectors” to ordering them.

Mitsubishi Electric Introduces LaserVue Projectors that Let You Wave “Goodbye” to Lamp Replacements

Orlando, Fla., January 29, 2013 — Mitsubishi Electric’s new LaserVue® family of lamp-free, environmentally-conscious portable projectors create brilliant images with accurate colors using a technologically advanced light engine unlike any other hybrid projector on the market today. Eco-conscious teachers and presenters will see Mitsubishi’s first new hybrid projector at FETC (Florida Education Technology Conference) at the Orlando Convention Center this week in Booth #1113.

As a leading supplier of the world’s laser light engines for display devices, Mitsubishi draws on its expertise to design and build this new line of lamp-free projectors.  To produce the red-green-blue lighting elements required to form all display colors, Mitsubishi LaserVue projectors use one pure red LED and up to 34 pure blue laser diodes of varying strengths and wavelengths, and a solid-colored phosphor wheel that emits green light.

Unlike other light engine designs in the market today, some of the blue laser diodes are diverted to excite phosphors on this single-segment wheel. This creates a clean, clear green, eliminating color breaking or rainbow effects that are sometimes observed in similar projectors. Those that use dual or multi-segment color phosphor wheels often attempt to boost brightness at the expense of color accuracy. Mitsubishi’s new design creates bright, truer blues and purer greens—rich and accurate colors—using a single-segment wheel. Read the rest of this entry »

Pacific Media Tracks Top Selling Projectors – Press Release

December 30th, 2012 admin

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

Pacific Media Associates provides us with regular updates on industry (projector) trends.  They break out projectors in multiple categories such as Pico and Pocket projectors (they are now calling them “New Era” projectors, Mainstream, and High End (mostly larger fixed/install projectors and rental and staging models).
PMA itself has been polling the dealer base for a long time.  For many years my old company Presenting Solutions would report every projector sale we made to them each month – breaking it out by model, quantity, etc.   The’ve been polling the largest dealers for well more than a decade, providing a real pulse on the shape, and direction of the projector industry – both business/education/government, and home.
BTW, it shouldn’t surprise anyone but the home projector segment is tiny compared to the rest of the projector industry.   As you look at the numbers in the press release below, notices that each of the categories numbers are pulled from different sources, some data is from distributors, some from dealers, some from integrators.  With that in mind, please realize that the biggest strength of the data is PMA’s consistent polling.  It’s great for comparing month to month or year over year.
But, when it comes to picking the best selling projector models, keep in mind that each set of numbers is servicing primarily one distribution channel, not all.
Thus, it may well be that strong showings for one or more products in one channel doesn’t mean the same projector is strong in other channels.  As an example, look at the Mainstream category numbers:   You see that NEC and InFocus dominate in the number of units via Distributors.   Both manufacturers rely heavily upon distributors for moving the product through.  By comparison, some other companies, let’s say Panasonic and Epson to pick two, rely more on direct sales to the largest dealers, and far less on distributors.   Thus,  it is conceivably possible that both of those companies could have a projector that outsell any of the top 5 listed, simply because that report does not track units sold directly to large dealers.   For example the dealers that advertise on our site, almost all buy directly from the likes of Epson and Panasonic, not through distribution…

In other words, keep an open mind.  That notwithstanding, there’s plenty of useful data to mine from PMA’s numbers.   There are several research companies “competing” against PMA.  Between all of them, you can paint a really excellent picture of the industry, but since each uses different methodology, and even define their categories differently, you do need to put on your thinking cap if you are looking for more than a basic feel for the projector industry sales.  -art

Sony Unveils New VPL-GT100 Projector – Press Release

December 4th, 2012 admin

Sony VPL-GT100 projector

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:

The Sony VPL-GT100 projector  has great breeding.  This commercial 4K projector from Sony, is built on the same platform as their VPL-VW1000ES Home Theater Projector.  Art reviewed the home “version”, loves it and gave the VW1000ES our Outstanding Product of the Year award, earlier this year.    The VPL-GT100 looks to be an ideal solution when there can be no compromise in both resolution and color accuracy.  With 2000 lumens, this projector is ideal for a wide range of critical applications, from studio applications, screening rooms, super-hi resolution scientific and rendering applications.   Wherever WUXGA or 1080p is merely adequate, this 4K projector gives you four times the pixel count, and therefore can provide the same relative sharpness at half the viewing distance.   We look forward to reviewing the VPL-GT100 from a commercial perspective.  The VPL-GT100 will begin shipping this month (January 2013).
