Press Release
Latest New Era Projector Industry Forecast from Pacific Media Associates (PMA) Anticipates Exponential Growth
Pico and Personal Projector Sales Expected To Grow Six-Fold by 2016
Menlo Park, California, USA – January 3, 2013. Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the global market information experts on the projector category, has released their latest industry forecasts for the worldwide New Era projector market, which includes pico and personal projectors. PMA expects 2012 worldwide shipments of nearly 1.8 million units, and anticipates this figure to grow to more than 12.3 million units by the year 2016.
One of the strongest segments of anticipated growth are Pico Embedded models, which are projectors built into other mobile devices such as cell phones, cameras and camcorders. PMA has forecast a 66% growth rate for this segment, to nearly 1.5 million units shipped worldwide in 2013 and again expects that figure to double in 2014. By the year 2016, worldwide unit shipments in this category are forecast to reach 6.4 million units.
Another bright spot in the New Era forecast is the New Era Integrated projector category, which includes battery-powered Pico Companion projectors, as well as Personal, and Gaming/Toy projectors. PMA has forecast a very strong 68% growth rate for this segment, to over 1.4 million units shipped worldwide in 2013, and expects unit volume to again more than double in 2014. Exponential growth is anticipated to continue through 2016, where worldwide volumes will reach more than 5.9 million units. Read the rest of this entry »

Home Cinema 750HD Delivers True 3D and High-Quality 2D Entertainment
INTERNATIONAL CES, LAS VEGAS – Jan. 7, 2013 – Epson America, Inc. today expanded its award-winning line of 3LCD home theater projectors with the highly versatile and affordable 3LCD PowerLite® Home Cinema 750HD – offering families and first-time home theater enthusiasts an affordable and versatile 2D and true 3D big screen entertainment solution. The Home Cinema 750HD is Epson’s brightest home theater projector to date – projecting a bright and colorful display with up to 3,000 lumensi of color and 3,000 lumens of white brightness for dark or light rooms. Offering full HD, active shutter 3D with 720p resolution, the Home Cinema 750HD makes it easier than ever to enjoy movies, videogames, sporting events and more in high-quality 2D and eye-popping 3D at up to 300-inches.
“The Home Cinema 750HD is ready to display 3D from virtually any Blu-ray player, cable box or video game console right out of the box, unlike other 3D 720p projectors on the market today that are not compatible with Blu-ray players or game consoles, and require an additional format convertor for true 3D,” said Jason Palmer, marketing manager, Epson America. “Transforming the way we think about immersive 3D entertainment, the projector’s high brightness and portability provide an engaging 3D experience virtually anywhere – people are no longer confined to a dedicated theater room to see bright, crystal clear 3D movies, sports, video games and more.” Read the rest of this entry »

Comments by Projector Reviews staff:
Pacific Media Associates provides us with regular updates on industry (projector) trends. They break out projectors in multiple categories such as Pico and Pocket projectors (they are now calling them “New Era” projectors, Mainstream, and High End (mostly larger fixed/install projectors and rental and staging models).
PMA itself has been polling the dealer base for a long time. For many years my old company Presenting Solutions would report every projector sale we made to them each month – breaking it out by model, quantity, etc. The’ve been polling the largest dealers for well more than a decade, providing a real pulse on the shape, and direction of the projector industry – both business/education/government, and home.
BTW, it shouldn’t surprise anyone but the home projector segment is tiny compared to the rest of the projector industry. As you look at the numbers in the press release below, notices that each of the categories numbers are pulled from different sources, some data is from distributors, some from dealers, some from integrators. With that in mind, please realize that the biggest strength of the data is PMA’s consistent polling. It’s great for comparing month to month or year over year.
But, when it comes to picking the best selling projector models, keep in mind that each set of numbers is servicing primarily one distribution channel, not all.
Thus, it may well be that strong showings for one or more products in one channel doesn’t mean the same projector is strong in other channels. As an example, look at the Mainstream category numbers: You see that NEC and InFocus dominate in the number of units via Distributors. Both manufacturers rely heavily upon distributors for moving the product through. By comparison, some other companies, let’s say Panasonic and Epson to pick two, rely more on direct sales to the largest dealers, and far less on distributors. Thus, it is conceivably possible that both of those companies could have a projector that outsell any of the top 5 listed, simply because that report does not track units sold directly to large dealers. For example the dealers that advertise on our site, almost all buy directly from the likes of Epson and Panasonic, not through distribution…
In other words, keep an open mind. That notwithstanding, there’s plenty of useful data to mine from PMA’s numbers. There are several research companies “competing” against PMA. Between all of them, you can paint a really excellent picture of the industry, but since each uses different methodology, and even define their categories differently, you do need to put on your thinking cap if you are looking for more than a basic feel for the projector industry sales. -art

Sony VPL-GT100 projector
Comments by Projector Reviews staff:
The Sony VPL-GT100 projector has great breeding. This commercial 4K projector from Sony, is built on the same platform as their VPL-VW1000ES Home Theater Projector. Art reviewed the home “version”, loves it and gave the VW1000ES our Outstanding Product of the Year award, earlier this year. The VPL-GT100 looks to be an ideal solution when there can be no compromise in both resolution and color accuracy. With 2000 lumens, this projector is ideal for a wide range of critical applications, from studio applications, screening rooms, super-hi resolution scientific and rendering applications. Wherever WUXGA or 1080p is merely adequate, this 4K projector gives you four times the pixel count, and therefore can provide the same relative sharpness at half the viewing distance. We look forward to reviewing the VPL-GT100 from a commercial perspective. The VPL-GT100 will begin shipping this month (January 2013).
