Sony VPL-EX100 Projector Comparison

Check out our review of the Sony VPL-EX175 projector.

The Sony VPL-EX100 is the entry level and least expensive projector of Sony's VPL-E Series. This is a comparison of the VPL-EX100 (MSRP $750) to its more expensive and sophisticated sibling, the VPL-EX175 (MSRP $1420), which we reviewed.

The VPL-EX100 is different in many ways. It is significantly less bright with 2300 lumens, compared to the VPL-EX175, almost 40% brighter at 3600 lumens. The contrast ratio of the VPL-EX100 is 2200:1 as opposed to its sibling's 4000:1. What that means for the VPL-EX100's colors is that they will not pop nearly as much. With a single, one watt speaker, the VPL-EX100 can handle presentations in smaller group environments where audio is not critical. The VPL-EX175 is more than adequately equipped to present in large venues such as conference and training rooms with its 10 watt speaker.

Aside from all of the above, the projectors share many similarities. The VPL-EX100 and its sibling both have native XGA resolution. They both have basic inputs including component and s-video. They both have wired networking capabilities. With each weighing give or take seven pounds, measuring around 5Hx12Wx11D, the projectors are fairly portable.

Boasting 3LCD technology, the colors tend to be very accurate. Both have monitor outputs which is advantageous for connecting both projector and monitor. The maximum lamp life of the VPL-EX100 and its sibling is 3000 hours when used at full power and 6000 lamp hours when used in eco-mode.

The photos below were taken using the Sony VPL-EX100's sibling, the VPL-EX175. With that noted, the images from the VPL-EX100 projector should look fairly similar to the one we reviewed, save for being dimmer and with less contrast.

So what about the VPL-EX100 makes it so appealing? For one, the price is significantly lower. Its 3 year parts and labor warranty is pretty much the best you will come by, ensuring a low cost of operation. If what you are looking for is an entry level projector to meet your presentation needs, then the VPL-EX100 will surely get the job done!
