Best Selling Business and Education Projectors - July, August 2015

For July and August, PMA reports the list of the best selling projectors in the pico, mainstream and 4,000-plus lumen categories. A little background on the PMA reports: Two out of every three months, Pacific Media Associates releases a list of the top five projectors in varying categories. They’ve been doing this since the 1990s, and the releases continue to provide our industry with valuable information. We combine their data to produce our summaries and comments four times a year.

Just so you know, a one/two month snapshot doesn’t always give you a complete feel of the projector market as a whole. Some models always show up on PMA’s lists; others change from month to month. PMA also selects different projector categories to analyze in alternate months. For this reason we like to combine two months of reports to give you a more complete look.

Let’s go!

July Top Projectors By Sales And Category

The leaders in the 4,000+ Lumen Projectors were mostly business units.  Editor's note: the Epson PowerLite 1985WU was voted the Best Value Large Venue Projector, right here in our 2015-16 Education Projector report. The Sony VPL-FHZ55 is also a solid choice for houses of worship.

The portable Epson PowerLite 1940W seems to be the least expensive of the five, coming in at roughly $1,200. At the high end is the $4,500-plus Sony VPL-FHZ55 with its 3LCD laser light source.  Hitachi joins the group leaders in this month's report,  with a solid choice for auditoriums and conference rooms.

All are at least somewhat portable and feature around 3,000 lumens of brightness.

New to the list is AAXA again with the P4-X and for the first time, LG's PF1500, the brightest with 1400 lumens and comes complete with TV tuner.

Now let’s look at August’s best sellers.

August Top Projectors By Sales And Category

August’s best selling 4,000+ Lumen Projectors saw a few overlaps with July’s list.

But first, the Epson Pro G6770WU tops the list as a new entry.  Again, the list featured mostly business units. The Epson PowerLite 1985WU, voted Best Value Large Venue Projector in our 2015-16 education projector report, came in 4th this month and the Sony VPL-FHZ55 3LCD laser light source projector, a popular choice for houses of worship, again made the list in 2nd place, while its partner, the VPL-FHZ65/W comes in 5th this month, which, like the Epson G6770WU is a brand new projector.  Optoma's EH501 rounds out the list by placing 3rd.  While most are installation projectors, the 1985W at 10.5 lbs., is suitable to be moved from room to room.

August’s Mainstream Projector best sellers featured several models popular in the classroom, including the Epson PowerLite 98H, Epson PowerLite X27 and low-cost InFocus In114a.

The PowerLite 98H’s moderator device management software lets instructors wirelessly share and compare students' work from multiple devices, making it a popular choice for BYOD (bring your own device) classrooms.

It should be noted that the Epson 585Wi which claimed top sales numbers by PMA for an interactive projector, sells for far more than any of the other projectors on this Mainstream list below.  That says a whole lot about the surging popularity of interactive projectors, primarily in educational institutions.  It is over twice the price of any of the others on this list, even when considering education discounts.

The best selling model in the Pico and Personal Projectors segment in August was the Asus S1 followed by the AAXA LED Pico, the P300 Pico and P4-X.  LG rounded out this August "Top 5" list with their PF1500 coming in 5th once again this month.  We have recently received another AAXA projector for review, and are expecting an LG PF1500 for review as well.
