Business Mainstream, Home Entertainment, 4000+ Lumen Projectors – Best Sellers Nov. 2016 – Jan. 2017

Business and education projectors

PMA publishes what is typically a bi-monthly list of the best selling projectors in the Home Entertainment, Mainstream (Business) and 4,000-plus lumen categories (US sales only).

This time around, the combined results of two sets of reports have Epson with the strongest numbers:  With three total categories times two different months (Nov ’16 and Jan ’17) of top 5 sales, Epson projectors dominated with nine total – which is pretty impressive out of 30 total slots.  (Not too surprising since they are by far the largest manufacturer.)

Other strong performers this time around include:  Optoma with six slots (also no surprise as they happen to be the #2 overall projector seller in the US), NEC projectors with 4 total, and Viewsonic projectors next with 3.

A little background on the PMA reports: Several times a year Pacific Media Associates releases a list of the top five projectors in varying categories. They’ve been doing this since the 1990s, and the releases continue to provide our industry with valuable information.

We combine their data to produce our summaries and comments for your information.

Just so you know, a one/two month snapshot doesn’t necessarily give you a complete feel of the projector market as a whole. Some models usually show up on PMA’s lists; others change from month to month. PMA also selects different projector categories to analyze in alternate months.

For further explanation, PMA puts out these tidbits, with their goal of selling their research to the various projector manufacturers.  Since projectors are sold through a number of different marketing channels, any given report has some limitations that the full PMA reports would deal with.

One example, is Mainstream projectors.  Seems that in some of these updates, PMA looks at mainstream projectors using the large distributors for their numbers.  In another month, they might look at that same category but show the top sellers among the largest dealers, many of whom buy direct from the manufacturer, bypassing distribution.

The end result – in one month’s report, the mainstream list may be dominated by brands that primarily sell through distributors, and the next month, the short report favors manufacturers that sell direct to large dealers.  Then there’s also the direct sales from manufacturers’ own e-commerce sites, which may not be counted in either report.

All that said, if you look at a few months (2 or three of these blogs), you’ll get a great idea of what are the best selling projectors, or, more realistically, which series of projectors dominate sales.

Let’s go!
