SONY VPL-VW350ES PROJECTOR - ADVANCED CALIBRATION INFORMATION: CMS Calibration, Calibration Charts

Mike's CMS Calibration Notes

422As usual, Sony provides a range of color spaces that tend to make a CMS unnecessary.  BT.709 is about as close as you can get to the Rec. 709 standard.  Color Space 1, 2 and 3 expand the gamut to varying degrees, with Color Space 2 being the largest gamut of the three.  As far as picture quality is concerned, the different color spaces used by all but Reference, User and Photo modes make for more saturated colors, but are less accurate.

Since Sony did include a CMS with the VW350ES, I used it to fine tune the already excellent color.  This was even better than the grayscale performance.  Delta E averaged 0.9 before calibration, which is a good result for many projectors after calibration.  After calibration, Delta E dropped to an average of 0.5, which is excellent.  Chromaticity error went from a maximum of -2.7% (which is excellent) to a maximum of 0.7%.  As you can see from the two CIE charts and the small changes in the CMS settings, there’s very little difference between default and calibrated.
