OVERVIEW

XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro Portable Smart Projector
The Ricoh WUL6690 is ideal for higher education, places of worship, conferences, and other big and small location-based venues.

Ricoh is no stranger to the projector industry, with a rich history of building projection products used in businesses and schools worldwide. The five new projectors, of which the WUL6690 is the flagship, represent the company's first entry into the professional laser projection market in the US. Ricoh sees the laser projection market as a significant opportunity. With a focus on performance, quality, and reliability, Ricoh is convinced that the company's new projection products will meet the needs of a wide range of customers.

Ricoh's multi-module laser light source is at the heart of the WUL6690 and the four other projectors, which use multiple laser diodes to create a laser beam. Ricoh’s multiple-module laser is designed to ensure that if a single laser diode malfunctions, the overall light output of the projector remains relatively unaffected. This design significantly enhances laser stability and reliability. This laser is so stable that It reduces the chance that users will experience an inconvenient dip or loss of projection light at a critical point, like in the middle of presentations. This laser technology
displays crisp and vivid visuals even in well-lit surroundings, making the WUL6690 perfect for lecture halls, conference rooms, and other large venues.

The multi-module laser light source is also incredibly reliable, offering a guaranteed light source life of up to 20,000 hours, which is remarkable considering how long professional projectors like the PJ WUL6690 can be left running.

The laser light source can produce an image that displays more than 97% of the Rec.709 color gamut range. RICOH's unique NCE natural gain technology, advanced RGB adjustment, and selectable GAMMA types allow lifelike color reproduction to fit the environment's needs.

XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro Portable Smart Projector

The WUL6690 uses a high-quality WUXGA (1920 x 1200p) DLP chip for widescreen high-definition projection. This 0.67-inch Texas Instrument professional DLP chip displays a native WUXGA image, so there is no distortion due to pixel shifting introduced into the projected image.

Ricoh sees dust as a key factor affecting the lifespan of projectors, so the company has created a specially designed enclosure for the light engine. This enclosure effectively seals the light engine components so well that the projector has an IP5X dustproof rating. The projector's entire light engine is completely protected, even in extremely dusty and dirty environments. This type of protection is especially valuable if you plan on using this projector as part of a rental fleet.

The WUL6690 features a high-performance lens with motorized focus, zoom, and lens shift capabilities. The motorized lens adjustment allows for more flexibility after installation.

Multiple image adjustment functions Horizontal and vertical ±30° keystone correction, four-corner and six-point correction, and grid correction allow for projection onto curved surfaces such as spheres and arc screens. Geometric correction can be achieved effortlessly using only a remote control.

Setting up two projectors side by side makes it possible to create one larger image. The projector's built-in image correction technology helps create virtually seamless multi-projection setups, eliminating the need for specialized hardware and software to adjust the image.

The Ricoh projector management utility is a free software program developed by the company to connect, control, and monitor between 1 and 100 Ricoh projectors. The software is available for Windows and Mac platforms and works with projectors and on computers supporting PJLink software protocols. This utility allows operators or network admins to control and get projector status information, including real-time hardware performance data and alerts.

The Ricoh PJ WUL6690 is not a 4K projector, but it does accept signals from 4K sources and will display them in WUXGA. Like many newer professional projectors, Ricoh has included full HDR compatibility into the projector, allowing HDR10 and HLG-encoded signals to be recognized and displayed. HDR-encoded content can display a wider range of colors and increase the visibility of dark areas and white highlight details in HDR content.

The WUL6690 is 3D-capable, accepting 3D content from multiple source types. The WUL6690 is compatible with 3D Blu-ray players, 3D broadcasting, and 3D-capable game consoles. 3D content can help increase classroom engagement and knowledge retention, and projectors like the WUL6690 that support 3D can be used in design, engineering, and other technical trades.

The WUL6690 remote has many buttons organized into multiple sections. The top section contains the POWER and STANDBY buttons. Below that section are the projector's dedicated keypad and buttons for STATUS and ID. The middle section of the remote is where the standard navigation controls are located, and the AUTO, INPUT, MENU, and EXIT buttons are on each of the D-Pad's four corners. The last section is for one-touch access to key picture adjustments for PICTURE, BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and TEST PATTERN. Below are dedicated control buttons to adjust LENS SHIFT, FOCUS, KEYSTONE, and ZOOM.

The remote does not have dedicated volume buttons. Users will need to adjust the volume from the projector's menu. It is possible to assign one of the projector USER buttons to trigger the volume control.

LENS

XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro Portable Smart Projector

The lens featured on this projector displays excellent corner-to-corner focus and no visible chromatic aberration or hot-spotting. Lens quality is critical since the projector can display an image up to 300 inches diagonally.

The WUL6690 features a high-performance 1.6X lens with motorized focus, zoom, and lens shift capabilities. The lens can be electronically shifted 0~55 degrees horizontally and 0~25 degrees vertically. The motorized lens adjustment allows for more flexibility after installation. Having such a wide lens shift combined with motorized focusing and high magnification zoom capabilities eliminates the need to adjust the projector physically to align the projected image with the screen.

One of the advantages Ricoh offers on the WUL6690 is the ability to save and load up to five different lens settings that hold the desired position of the lens, the zoom setting, and the focus settings.

Ricoh has also included the ability for this projector series to display both picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture, allowing the projector to display two images from two different input sources.

Ricoh lists the projector's throw ratio as anywhere between 30 to 300 inches diagonally.

Several preset color options are available to help you achieve the best results, which can be accessed using the dedicated Picture button on the remote. Users can choose between BRIGHT, STANDARD, VIVID, NATURAL, BLENDING, and DICOM-SIM preset picture modes.

The STANDARD mode delivers the best results for SDR content in spaces with some uncontrolled ambient lighting. The BRIGHT mode is ideal for rooms with more uncontrolled ambient light and content such as text, images, graphs, etc. The NATURAL mode offers the most accurate color reproduction while watching SDR movies or content. All viewing modes produce a consistent experience in terms of framerate, and there are no sports modes or motion smoothing.

The six SDR factory presets are optimized for various types of images. All the projector's preset picture modes can be customized, and the changes remain persistent unless the projector is reset. While there is a noticeable difference between the picture each of these modes displays, it is more incremental and not dramatic.

Most of the projector's preset picture modes are tuned warm, with black and shadow details having a mild green hue, common on many professional DLP projectors I’ve reviewed.

The best out-of-the-box preset picture modes for rooms with minimal or fully controlled lighting were STANDARD (SDR), NATURAL (SDR), and HDR. VIVID is the best mode for maintaining color in spaces with significant uncontrolled ambient light sources, with BRIGHT meant to be used in extreme situations.

Out of the box, images look great for presentation content and graphics. The projector is more than capable of displaying entertainment-based content. If users take the time to use the projector's built-in calibration tools, the image can look even better. This projector is designed for business and education use cases. Despite having the ability to decode HDR and its color management system, it is not a home entertainment device.

Below is the breakdown of the projector's preset picture modes.

Bright: This mode is meant to be used when using the projector in situations with large amounts of uncontrolled ambient light. In these situations, the picture is incredibly cool, with colors and contrast muted.

Standard: Mode for optimizing the balance between brightness
and color reproduction.

Vivid: This mode emphasizes colors in the image and is another mode that would be excellent for use in venues with some amount of light, which tends to wash out colors.

Natural: This mode is the projector's most color-accurate SDR image mode and my choice when watching entertainment-based content.

Blending: This mode prioritizes gradation and is designed when combining two projector images to make a wider image. This mode minimizes the distortion where the two images overlap and helps balance differences in brightness and contrast.

DICOM SIM: This mode is designed to present medical images – such as X-rays, CAT-scans, MRI’s PETs, etc., with enough contrast, detail, and quality along with minimal noise for use in medical schools, at medical conferences, and for education purposes, etc.

DICOM-SIM mode is not a substitute for doctors reading original medical films. However, it is ideal to be used in classrooms or teaching settings for training doctors, nurses, and technicians.

HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE

HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode can improve a projector's contrast ratio, brightness, and color depth. HDR can also give you blacker blacks and more brilliant highlights than SDR for a wider tonal range. Ricoh allows users to adjust the projector's primary picture settings while in the HDR mode and obtain the best image quality.

The Ricoh WUL6690 supports content encoded in HDR10 and HLG. The out-of-the-box HDR mode does not display deep blacks, and I did not see a significant increase in black levels between HDR mode and the projector's NATURAL SDR mode. I prefer using the projector's SDR modes.

Users can achieve a darker black level in HDR and SDR by putting the projector into ECO mode. More improvement can be made by adjusting the projector's light output and tweaking the brightness and contrast settings, but it comes with the cost of reducing dark area details and crushing the blacks.

The slideshow above the shot from the DC movie The Joker shows the impact of shadow detail when trying to get deeper blacks.
The dark areas in Joaquin Phoenix’s shirt get crushed and lose the details in the shirt that are visible at higher brightness levels.

The projector does an excellent job showing the bright highlights through the white makeup of the Joker's face.

Looking at the photo of Spider-man: Far From Home, you can see the excellent job that the WUL6690 does, providing both dark area details in the spider suit and bright area highlights in the sky and clouds.

All of the content for this demo came from my connected computer via the HDMI output. The displayed text was crisp enough to read easily, even content in smaller font sizes. The STANDARD mode provided the best color, brightness, and contrast balance. Still, all modes displayed presentation content like presentations or documents with a range of graphics in them. Spreadsheets also looked good and should hold up quite well even when projecting at this unit's largest recommended screen size of 300 inches.

The WUL6690 accepted a 4K signal, but I didn’t see a huge difference in 4K content compared to Full HD on this projector. Likely, this projector supports 4K and HDR content because this allows the projector to be easily used in a mixed system with 4K HDR flat panel displays.

The WUL6690 displays presentation and graphics content beautifully, even with uncontrolled ambient light sources. The WUL6690 has a DICOM simulation color mode that is designed to present medical images – such as X-rays, CAT-scans, MRI’s PETs, etc., with enough contrast, detail, and quality along with minimal noise for use in medical schools, at medical conferences and for education purposes, etc.

DICOM Simulation is not intended to be used as a substitute for doctors reading original medical films. However, it is ideal to be used in classrooms or teaching settings for training doctors, nurses, and technicians.

The Ricoh WUL6690 is one of three new High-Quality series projectors and is the brightest out of Ricoh's three latest HQ projectors. Ricoh rates the WUL6690 at 9,600 lumens, perfect for rental houses, auditoriums, and hotel ballrooms, an excellent choice for large venues or venues with uncontrolled ambient light sources.

The WUL6690’s brightness is certainly one of the biggest features of this projector and a main selling point. The projector displayed an incredibly clear image, especially for a WUXGA image. The projector displayed no visible hotspots, providing consistent light distribution across the screen, even at the far corners.

Business projectors of this type emphasize brightness as they are designed to be used in a huge range of venues where total lighting control is impossible. One of the first things that uncontrolled ambient light combined with a high-brightness projector does is impact displayed black levels.

The WUL6690 will not display the black levels with shadow details found in a home theater projector; however, in the typical spaces where you would use this projector, that won’t be a problem. The photos above show various dark scenes, giving you an idea of the WUL6690’s black-level performance.

Blacks are darker grey, which is unsurprising since this is a very bright DLP projector. Many factors can impact the projector's black-level performance, including the choice of projector screen. Ricoh provides users with brightness, contrast, and color temperature settings that will allow you to improve the overall out-of-the-box performance of the picture for the classroom, conference room, boardroom, and lecture hall. The projector's black-level performance and warm colors are good enough for content like that found at art exhibitions or museum venues.

Ricoh does include a contrast-enhancing mode on the projector. However, I could only find a slight difference visible at best between the settings, primarily when using presentation-style content and not entertainment-based content. I had more control by manually adjusting the projector's laser output and then playing around with the brightness and contrast controls in the menu to achieve the best overall result.

SUMMARY

Xgimi Mogo 2 Pro Projector Summary - Projector Reviews - Image

The Ricoh WUL6690 is an excellent business and professional projector. The unit offers very competitive features and performance that is on par with other units in its class. Ricoh's $8,500 MSRP is very competitive for a native WUXGA (1920 x 1200p) Laser DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector of this class.

One of the projector's biggest benefits is its ability to exceed the manufacturer-rated 9,600 lumens of brightness, allowing the WUL6690 to be used in some of the most difficult venues regarding uncontrolled light sources. The projector's 9,600 ANSI lumens enable users to overcome some of the worst lighting situations and display a viewable image in most venues, even larger ones.

The out-of-the-box color performance of the WUL6690 is great for presentation and graphics content but could be better for content like movies and television shows. Fortunately, the projector has various preset picture modes and a very advanced CMS (color management system). The WUL6690 even includes adjusting the projector's color space to compensate for wall colors, gamma, and black level adjustments.

The projector's out-of-the-box preset modes are warmer than you typically get from a high-brightness professional projector. Colors are more neutral without the typical oversaturated look of laser DLP projectors. The colors were more muted even in the projector's VIVID picture mode. In the pictures above from Guardians of the Galaxy, you can see that Gamora’s green skin looks pale even in VIVID mode. Fortunately, the projector can display more saturated colors with a few simple adjustments, which is valuable if you show content other than presentation style in bright t environments.

The Ricoh WUL6690 has black-level adjustments that work well with presentation-style content but don’t make a significant difference with more entertainment content. Users can improve the projector's gray blacks to something darker by manually adjusting the light output and brightness and contrast adjustments. While these adjustments can deepen the displayed black levels, this does come at the expense of dark area details.

The lens on the WUL6690 is excellent, offering a 1.6x motorized optical zoom with a throw ratio of 1.25-2.0. Ricoh’s can display a 300-inch diagonal image in a 16:10 aspect ratio.
The lens looks great, with no visible distortion or aberrations and excellent corner-to-corner focus.

The Ricoh WUL6690’s high-brightness laser-light source offers up to 20,000 hours of light-source life in NORMAL operations mode. Ricoh also provides Constant Power and Constant Brightness to help the projector maintain consistent brightness as the light source dims with age.

The Ricoh WUL6690 supports HDBaseT connectivity and RS-232 protocols, AMX, Crestron RoomView, and Extron IPLink, allowing users to manage and operate multiple projectors remotely.

COMPETITION

OPTOMA ZU920TST ($11,999 MSRP)

At 9,800 lumens with 4K and HDR compatibility, the ZU920TST features a dust-resistant IP5X-certified optical engine for 24/7 operation capabilities, offering true maintenance-free projection for up to 30,000 hours of powerful performance in Eco mode.

Other features include a motorized zoom and focus, full motorized lens shift, and built-in dual 10W speakers. High brightness, color precision, quiet operation, and short-throw lens make this projector ideal for end-user scenarios and professional environments, such as short-throw digital signage, edge-blending and projection mapping, simulation, and immersive installations.

The added control flexibility of HDBaseT and LAN make this projector an affordable install-and-forget solution. The feature set and performance are incredibly similar on these two projectors, making the Ricoh WUL6690 a far better value at its $8,500 MSRP.

The projector includes 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 (HDCP 2.2) so it can support 4K@60fps source material. In addition, the WUL6690 can receive, process, and display HDR-encoded content. The ability to display HDR content is more of a benefit in a consumer projector, but overall, I'm pleased that Ricoh is joining the slowly growing list of professional projector manufacturers who support HDR.

Panasonic PT-MZ880 ($7,999 MSRP)

The Panasonic PT-MZ880 3LCD SOLID SHINE Laser Projector is an 8,000-lumens projector with a laser light engine that can natively display WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution.

Ricoh and Panasonic’s projectors offer a similar set of features and performance. The PT-MZ880 provides features like Dynamic Contrast and Panasonic's Daylight View Basic, designed to deliver sharp, clear images by enhancing detail, particularly in dark areas of the image that would typically be difficult to see in brightly lit rooms. The Ricoh WUL6690 offers a manufacturer-rated 9,600 lumens of brightness.

The PT-MZ880 is an incredibly flexible projector designed to be easily installed in virtually any business environment. Providing a wide range of optional interchangeable lenses, including an exciting ultra-short-throw lens, guarantees you can install this projector in almost any installation environment. The PT-MZ880 has all the connections you would expect on a higher-end business/education class projector, including three HDMI inputs that support up to 4K@60 fps and a DIGITAL LINK/HDBaseT port.

Priced at an astonishingly aggressive $7,999.00 MSRP, Panasonic describes this projector as well-balanced, flexible, and reliable. These characteristics make it perfect for classrooms, boardrooms, and large venues such as lecture halls, auditoriums, and even houses of worship.

These two projectors feature a very similar performance and feature set. Still, the higher brightness of the Ricoh WUL6690 seems like a feature worth the $500 difference in price compared to the Panasonic.
