The LG BU70QGA is LG's first professional projector designed for the digital signage category.

The LG ProBeam BU70QGA, LG Professional's latest top-of-the-line 4K DLP projector, is priced at $5,499 MSRP. The projector  uses a multi-channel laser light source that can produce a brightness of up to 7,000 ANSI lumens with a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of 3,000,000:1.

The BU70QGA represents a first for LG. The BU70QGA is LG's first ProBeam projector designed for the company's digital signage category of products. The BU70QGA laser projector suits various business and professional applications, including simulator markets and office meeting rooms, but is meant primarily for the digital signage market. In addition to being an incredibly useful professional projector, the BU70QGA has the performance chops to easily fit into the living rooms or home theater rooms of projection enthusiasts worldwide.

The BU70QGA displays a resolution of 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160), has a laser light source life of up to 20,000 hours, and features auto lens shift, zoom, and focus with a 1.6x optical zoom.

The BU70QGA offers an incredible range of connectivity options, including two (2) RJ45 wired network connections providing an HDBaseT port, with the second being a dedicated LAN port. In addition to the projector's hardware network connection, the BU70QGA also provides users with wired and wireless network connectivity.

The BU70QGA is, without a doubt, a serious projector built with high-performance hardware and powerful features. I will cover all of these key items throughout this review. I will also discuss the overall benefits of LG's webOS 6.0 signage platform later in this review. From a very high level, webOS 6.0 for Signage is LG's software solution used in the company's line of digital signage flat-panel displays. The BU70QGA is LG's ProBeam projector with a fully integrated webOS 6.0 for Signage, making this LG's first projector specifically designed for digital signage applications. LG has made the platform available to many LG partners specializing in content management and distribution solutions.

We reviewed other LG ProBeam models in the past, including the LG ProBeam BU60PST and, more recently, the BU53PST, and were very impressed by these projectors' picture qualities and feature sets. Check out our reviews by clicking the mode number/links above.

OVERVIEW

As a leading manufacturer of flat-panel TVs, LG recognizes the demand for a more immersive viewing experience that surpasses the capabilities of even the largest OLED or LCD TV. The BU70QGA ProBeam projector is designed to cater to a wide range of business and education professionals, making large-scale projection more accessible and appealing for pro users.

The ProBeam BU70QGA's visual engine is driven by a Texas Instruments' 0.65-inch DLP (Digital Light Processing) imager or DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) with XPR technology to deliver stunning, displayed 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution images.

This ProBeam projector uses a laser-phosphor light source that provides a manufacturer-rated 7,000 ANSI lumens of brightness designed to produce sharp, clear images in venues with active external light sources. To say that this projector is bright is an understatement.

The LG BU70QGA's high-quality LG laser light engine is sealed to prevent dust particles from settling inside the projector's laser-projected light path and obstructing the projected image.

The light output rating of 7,000 lumens should be more than bright enough for the projector to be utilized in many professional environments, from large halls and museums to display environments with large amounts of ambient light. This super bright LG professional projector's high-output laser diode is rated to provide up to 20,000 hours of near-maintenance-free operation. With this laser diode, the projector can play videos for eight hours daily for seven years!

The combination of laser phosphor illumination and 4K DLP imaging should be incredibly reliable and is backed by LG’s three-year/15,000-hour warranty period. In addition, routine lamp replacements and maintenance are unnecessary so that the ProBeam BU70QGA can be placed in difficult-to-reach locations such as creative museum displays or high-ceiling installations in auditoriums.

XGIMI MoGo 2 Pro Portable Smart Projector
The BU70QGA uses a high-quality lens with horizontal and vertical lens shift.

The ProBeam BU70QGA offers a 1.6x optical zoom lens and auto horizontal and vertical lens shift features critical for a projector designed for challenging venues or installations. This means the projector can easily be mounted on existing projection mounts with zooming and shifting, allowing your customer to fit the image exactly without using digital adjustments.

The BU70QGA also features automatic focus from the projector's remote control or through a software-based control system from a PC, phone, or tablet.

For those situations where additional adjustment is needed to compensate for unusual projection surfaces or when combining multiple projectors to create a single image, LG provides 4, 9, 15, and 25-point Warping functions. These functions reduce image distortion and allow precise alignment with the screen.

The BU70QGA supports a multi-projector display for up to 9 projectors that can be easily daisy-chained via the built-in HDMI connections on the device.

Displayed images can be rotated without changing the projector's orientation.

The BU70QGA supports image rotation, so users can display content horizontally or vertically without physically changing the projector's orientation. In addition, LG lists that the projector has no installation angle limitations. Specifically, there are no vertical or horizontal limits related to the projector installation.

The BU70QGA features a range of built-in preset modes, including seven preset video modes and six preset audio modes. These preset modes help you get the most from the projector in different venues.

The BU70QGA features two built-in speakers and an HDMI Audio Return Channel (ARC) with a simple connection to soundbars to offer an immersive experience. If you use this unit in a home theater, the ARC function supports Dolby Digital for passthrough and Dolby Atmos. The projector also includes Bluetooth connectivity for easy connection to external Bluetooth speakers or Bluetooth-capable sound systems.

LG professional has 50 webOS for Signage third-party content partners.
Displayed images can be rotated without changing the projector's orientation.

While LG ProBeam models do not have all the smart features in the CineBeam products, the ProBeam BU70QGA has several notable features that enhance connectivity and productivity.

LG's webOS 6.0 Signage Platform is the operating system that powers the projector with smart features, which can be helpful in business and education applications. The ProBeam BU70QGA can connect with LG ConnectedCare, LG's cloud-based device management solution for LG digital signage and display devices. Additionally, webOS 6.0 signage software allows customers to use any of the fifty and growing LG third-party partners. LG webOS 6.0 allows developers to create custom software solutions that can be implemented via the projector's SOC (System on a Chip).

Because webOS is customizable, partners can add projection capabilities to their own offerings. LG is already a key player in the on-device, software-based control and content distribution market with their webOS Smart Signage 6.0 Platform. The LG ProBeam BU70QGA is the first 4K UHD projector to showcase this incredibly powerful software platform. LG webOS 6.0 for signage is a powerful platform that runs a wide range of content management, distribution, and custom software solutions.

The BU70QGA offers monitoring and control via a network supporting third-party solutions from Crestron, Control4, Savant, and RS232C. This projector is also fully compatible with LG's optional, One: Quick Share USB transmitter and software for wireless screen sharing.

Overall, the BU70QGA's high-performance specs, including 7,000 ANSI lumens of brightness, combined with its low maintenance and apparent ability to function alone or in a network of up to nine of these projectors, make it a compelling professional solution. This projector can be used in various venues, from retail and museums to medium to large format halls for tradeshows and conventions. With its advanced capabilities, this projector makes networked content distribution and streaming easier than ever before.

Let's get into this review.

HARDWARE

LG BU70QGA 4K UHD Projector - Projector Reviews - Image

Compared to other LG ProBeam models, the LG ProBeam BU70QGA is a big projector. The projector's dimensions are 22.4 x 14.2 x 6.3 inches (570 x 360 x 160 mm) and weighs 39.0 lbs (17.7 kg). Unless you are used to lifting and maneuvering larger and heavier projectors, users should be smart and have someone help get the unit in place.

When facing the unit on a tabletop, the projector's lens is in the front panel's dead center. The front panel is where LG has placed a built-in camera designed to aid in quick setup and adjusting focus and zoom when selected. The front is also where one of two infrared receivers is located. The projector's cooling air intakes are also on the unit's front.

The rear of the projector's chassis is where all of the projector's inputs and connections are located. The BU70QGA cooling exhaust vent and the combined power button/joystick are on the back panel, with the control panel operating all the menu functions. All connections are on the rear of the projector.

For maximum flexibility, the BU70QGA is equipped with several types of video inputs, including HDMI, Display Port, and HDBaseT. There is even an HDMI output so you can daisy chain multiple projectors together.  For a complete inventory of controls and connections, see the photo below.

The LG BU70QGA remote control is fully featured but sadly lacks a much-needed backlight.

The remote control for the ProBeam BU70QGA is traditional and provides users with an extensive range of controls for all aspects of the projector's operation.

Users can adjust projector settings swiftly for different source materials and lighting conditions. With a simple press of a single button, switching from making a presentation in a fully bright room to watching sports or TV after dark becomes effortless.

Most of the projector's controls can be accessed and operated via a range of LG command and control software such as LG Control Manager.

LENS

XGIMIMoGoProprojectormenus

The ProBeam BU70QGA has a zoom range of 1.6x, allowing for placement at throw ratios of ~1.53 to 2.45. The ProBeam BU70QGA has electronic lens shift controls for horizontal and vertical lens shift. Lens shift adjustments can be done in two ways. The Auto Screen Adjustment feature allows the projector to set up Zoom, Focus, and Lens Shift. This mode can be engaged from the projector's remote control or using the control panel on the back of the projector via the menu. Users can also manually adjust the projector's lens shift settings.

Like all projectors with H/V shifts, moving the image in one direction will limit the amount of shift available in the opposite direction. Lens Shift: (H: +/- 28%, V: +60%/-33%, auto).

Throw distance can be quickly calculated using the screen width: Throw Ratio = Throw Distance/Image Width. I have provided a chart above for reference.

Edge blending is a powerful feature found in high-end projectors like the LG ProBeam BU70QGA. Edge blending allows users to create seamless and immersive images by aligning multiple projectors' edges or overlapping areas. Edge blending ensures a continuous and unified display without visible borders or gaps by slightly adjusting the projected images.

While aligning the image to the screen via optical Lens Shift provides the best image quality, the ProBeam BU70QGA also includes an EDGE BLENDING mode offering 4, 9, 15, or 25 adjustment points. This meticulous alignment ensures that even the smallest differences in positioning and brightness are accounted for, resulting in a perfect blend of the images.

This feature is very useful in large venues like theaters, museums, exhibition halls, and corporate events. It enables the creation of large and visually stunning displays that captivate audiences.

Like LG’s other digital signage displays, the BU70QGA has a built-in WebOS System on Chip (SoC) that allows the projector to communicate with an external server and play media content without using an external media playback and display control device.

You can also insert a USB drive into one of the ports and use webOS to navigate to folders and display images or video content as well as a variety of standard file formats. This is an extremely convenient method to play files when there is no network available for web access

LG webOS is a web-centric platform that provides powerful features for creating features in rich web apps. The webOS menus are developer-friendly and allow easy navigation and operation of the projector's extensive features, including content playback and expansion of various solutions and services.

The LG ProBeam BU70QGA menu system is incredibly intuitive and easy to operate, especially for such a feature-rich professional display. The LG menu system even includes visual operation guides on making specific adjustments, which I found very useful.

PERFORMANCE

COLOR REPRODUCTION

Overall I found the colors with the BU70QGA to be vibrant. This projector's color profile is similar to other LG ProBeam 4K laser projectors I have reviewed. This is a DLP projector, so colors can appear mildly oversaturated out of the box with an image that is very cool in tone, leaning towards greens and blues. Again, this is consistent with LG's ProBeam color tuning, which serves this projector well when it is being used to display content at retail, tradeshows, pop-ups, and showcases where there will be many bright lights.

As you can see in the first three images above, the out-of-the-box color tuning is noticeable when watching movies. You can see the green accents in the two shots from Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially in the green grass and the white bricks of the Washington Monument. Flesh tones are overall quite good, but, like many DLP projectors, red is accented in the skin tones.

LG provides a wide range of picture calibration adjustments including White Balance, Gamma, and CMS (Color Management System) which can be used to optimize the projector's picture for the room environment.

Below are my impressions regarding the projector's out-of-the-box preset picture modes.

MALL/QSR: This is the brightest but least accurate picture mode. This mode is most appropriate for displaying presentation materials where color accuracy takes a back seat to make the content visible to almost anyone in the venue.

GENERAL: This mode strikes a balance between brightness and accuracy and succeeds for the most part. It lets you enjoy a dynamic, clear image by correcting the light and dark areas of the display.

TRANSPORTATION: This is the best mode to select when the projector is in a location with a large amount of uncontrolled ambient light. One of the benefits of the oversaturated colors I talked about above is that color remains decent even at the projector's highest light setting.

GOV/CORP: This mode provides a realistic picture, even when the source image's gradation level is high. It allows viewing videos/movies in a room with ambient light. It is one of the more accurate picture modes.

EDUCATION: This mode allows viewing movies in a darkened room. It has good contrast and color accuracy. Users would select this mode for viewing photos and collaborating in presentations and educational environments. These types of environments provide presenters with good overall control of the venue's light sources.

EXPERT: This mode usually provides users with many benefits of the FILMMAKER mode found on modern home theater projectors. However, I find this mode to be more like the CINEMA mode, usually designed for home theater projectors that account for large amounts of ambient light. This mode will provide a decent amount of dark and light area detail and a very neutral color.

CALIBRATION: Designed to be used by an expert, image calibrator, or anyone who loves picture quality. This model is one of the better choices if you are going to manually tune the projector settings to achieve the best picture quality.

HOSPITAL: This mode is similar to what is sometimes called DICOM-SIM mode. It is designed for displaying medical imaging such as X-rays, MRI, and CAT results, to name a few.

The ProBeam BU70QGA is LG's brightest business projector. LG lists the brightness of this projector as topping out at 7,000 lumens. The highest brightness reading on the projector's out-of-the-box modes is the MALL/QSR preset mode. I took measurements at different positions around the lens, about 15-20% out from the center.

The ProBeam BU70QGA measured 6,389 ANSI lumens which is very bright but 611 ANSI lumens less than LG's brightness claim. To ensure my measurements were correct, I checked my equipment, put new batteries in my meter, and measured twice more, all with the same result, give or take a few lumens. I also measured the other preset picture modes. See the chart below for all my results.

The most significant advantage of the BU70QGA is also the biggest contributing factor to the projector's average black-level performance. To be fair most 7,000 ANSI lumens DLP projectors cannot produce deep blacks but this will be fine when used in a digital signage environment where high brightness and color saturation will be more of a priority.

The blacks on the BU70QGA are closer to dark gray. Within the darker and brighter areas of the projected image, details are clearly visible even with the room lights on. The ProBeam BU70QGA is an excellent choice for venues with uncontrolled ambient light sources.

The video quality of the LG BU70QGA was excellent out of the box. The colors were presented pleasantly vibrant, and the black levels were pretty good overall.  I didn't have to play around with the manual color adjustments to end up with the images you see in the slideshow. I was in the GENERAL and the EXPERT preset picture modes for most of the screenshots.

The BU70QGA is designed for business/education applications, they are equipped with video processors similar to those utilized in LG's 4K HDR TVs. This means the projector is compatible with HDR10 content, and it is also one of a limited number of business projectors capable of Dynamic HDR Tone Mapping. This feature, developed for LG's consumer CineBeam projectors, automatically adjusts the projector tone mapping curves based on the scene being played to optimize the unit's HDR performance.

TEXT AND PRESENTATION QUALITY

  • Xgimi Mogo 2 Pro Projector Gaming - Projector Reviews - Image

The LG BU70QGA ProBeam projector can display 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution, making text appear crisp and with fine details visible. Since this is a 4K projector, viewers can sit close to a very large screen, and the image remains clear compared to the typical professional projector's WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) displayed resolution. The ability to display multiple documents or web pages simultaneously at high resolution on a giant screen is helpful in many professional use cases.

AUDIO QUALITY

The LG ProBeam BU70QGA has dual 5-watt speakers that play loud enough to fill a medium to large-sized space. The BU70QGA offers a typical professional projector. The speaker is more than loud enough in a classroom or boardroom and certainly could be used in various display applications.

LG BU70QGA Projector Sound - Projector Reviews - Image

The 31/35 db rated fan noise produced by the ProBeam BU70QGA is lower than a typical 7,000-lumen projector, depending on the mode selected. This noise is a little louder than some large home theater projectors make; however, it will not be an issue for this projector's targeted customer and use case. Viewers will not hear the projector fans in retail and most other digital signage environments.

SUMMARY

Xgimi Mogo 2 Pro Projector Summary - Projector Reviews - Image

The LG ProBeam BU70QGA is the company's first professional business projector designed with a focus on the digital signage segment of the professional projector category. Up to this point, LG digital signage displays have been exclusively made up of LG flat-panel displays. Adding an LG projector to this category expands display options in a way that flat panels cannot.

Powering Through Portable Power Banks - Projector Reviews - Image

For this article, I spoke with Susie Opare-Abetia, the founder and CEO of Woven Media, one of a growing number of LG partners in the digital signage space. During our conversation, Susie and I discussed what excited her about LG's first digital signage projector and LG as a partner.

Projection allows companies like Woven Media to help their retail partners reach and better engage with their customers in-store or on-site. Projectors like the BU70QGA use real estate, like floors, walls, and other surfaces, to inform and excite their customers. The BU70QGA can display high-resolution, scheduled, and scalable content in ways a flat panel could never be used.

Working with LG provides Woven Media and its clients with confidence based on LG's extensive history, experience, quality, and innovation in display technology. In addition to the quality of LG displays, Woven Media sees LG's webOS 6.0 for Signage platform as another key partnership benefit. With webOS, LG has created a high-quality software environment that eliminates the need for outboard media devices (desktops, laptops, or Android TV media players) traditionally used to deliver displayed content. Removing what is typically a whole layer in the device chain can reduce costs and improve reliability by eliminating potential points of failure. webOS 6.0 allows tools like those that Woven Media makes to run directly on LG webOS 6.0 signage displays.

WebOS provides improved communication and control between the LG displays and compatible CMS solutions like Woven Media's. In addition, LG webOS 6.0 provides its partners with a level of customization, device-level control, and interaction that traditional industry outboard third-party solutions cannot offer. Compared to traditionally used CMS hardware devices, LG should provide a more powerful, intuitive, and customizable solution to its partners and their clients.

Powering Through Portable Power Banks - Projector Reviews - Image

The BU70QGA joins a category of display products that, until now, has been exclusively made up of flat-panel televisions. This projector is LG's brightest professional projector, rated by the company as being 7,000 ANSI lumens.

The BU70QGA takes full advantage of its 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) resolution to create stunning images at almost 4x the typical professional projector resolution of WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200). This increased resolution allows for more detailed content to be displayed at sizes up to 300 inches diagonally. In addition, the BU70QGA supports edge blending for up to nine projectors allowing for much larger and uniquely shaped images.

This ultra-high quality DLP projector's laser phosphor light engine is rated to deliver 20,000 hours of 24/7 stable operation with no lamp replacements. It is the brightest business projector that LG has ever produced.

Users will benefit from LG's experience in consumer projectors and flat-panel displays. Owners of the BU70QGA can expect the same level of quality and attention to detail that LG offers in their consumer display products while also receiving the reliability, warranties, and service support expected from a business-focused projector.

While the ProBeam BU70QGA cannot match the black level and native contrast of a model designed for home theater use, it is an excellent option for a room with ambient light. Blacks on this projector are more gray than black, but the projector does an excellent job of displaying the subtle details in the projected image's darkest and brightest areas.

The BU70QGA comes with a 1.6x optical lens. LG provides a range of automatic zoom, focus, and even auto geometry (horizontal and vertical lens shift) features along with the ability also manually to control these features providing excellent installation flexibility.

The BU70QGA offers built-in wired and wireless networking functionality. Wireless networking is a feature many professional projectors don't ordinarily include. BU70QGA users can connect the projector directly to their network via a wired or wireless network to access photos, videos, and various other compatible file formats.

This is a projector that LG lists up front as being primarily designed for digital signage, so watching Top Gun: Maverick in most of the picture modes will look just a little off by design. The good news is that the BU70QGA offers built-in professional calibration adjustments to make the overall color tone more neutral and better suited to theater and home theater content, should the user want them. See the adjusted photo in the slideshow above of Top Gun Maverick.

The ProBeam BU70QGA projector is great for big rooms or places with lots of light, like meeting rooms, big halls, or signs in lobbies. It's good at showing detailed pictures and has very clear 4K picture quality. It's really bright with a laser diode light source that produces 7,000 ANSI of manufacturer-rated brightness. Users can shift the lens around and zoom in 1.6 times to make the picture fit right. The BU70QGA also offers wired and wireless networking. It has a built-in camera allowing the projector to automatically adjust the picture size, position, and focus at the touch of a button.

The BU70QGA is an incredible value, especially for the professional industry's digital signage, education, and business segments. If you are looking for an ultra-bright business projector for a classroom, boardroom, or house of worship, you would be hard-pressed to find another choice as good as this LG ProBeam. At $5,499 MSRP, the BU70QGA is a slam-dunk digital signage projector to add to your inventory.
