Best Selling Projectors: June/August 2018 Summary

We are pleased to be able to share with you, recent business, education, and home projector sales tracking information, for North America.  This summary provides a list of the 5 best selling projectors in the US, in these categories:  Mainstream business/education projectors, Higher power commercial projectors (5000 lumens+) and Home Entertainment Projectors.  Below are the rankings of the top best selling projectors, in each three categories, with results separate for June and August, This info is provided for us to share with you, by PMA.

Pacific Media Associates (PMA) publishes what is typically a semi-monthly list of the best selling projectors in the Home Entertainment, Mainstream (Business) and 5,000-plus lumen categories (US sales only).

PMA has been doing this reporting since the 1990s, and the releases continue to provide our industry with valuable information.  They sell detailed information of their tracking to the manufacturers, which find the data useful.  We get a summary – a  top five, while paying manufacturers get virtually a unit by unit breakdown of most projectors sales numbers.

When PresentingSolutions. com – my previous company, was a major internet projector reseller, we, like most others, reported our projector sales data to PMA.  (Visiting that URL, these days, refers you to this site).

We combine their data to produce our summaries and comments for your information.

We’ve provided some links at the bottom of each list.  Those are either a review of the same projector as seen on the list, or a sibling – typically one with almost identical feature sets, except perhaps different resolution, or different brightness.  Any links will relate closely to describing the projectors making the PMA lists shown here.  -art

June 2018 Top Projectors By Sales and Category

Best Selling 5000+ Lumen Projectors 6/18

ProjectorComments
#1 Sony VPL-PHZ10Laser light engine, 500,000:1 contrast, 5 year warranty, read our review
#2 Panasonic PT-RZ570W/B5200 lumens, WXGA resolution, 20,000 hour LED lamp
#3 NEC NP-P502WL-2Full HD 3D, Laser light source, 1.70:1 digital zoom
#4 Epson PowerLite 2250UWireless networking, 5000 lumens, WUXGA resolution, MSRP $1499
#5 Sony VPL-PWZ10Laser light engine, 500,000:1 contrast, MSRP $3400, WXGA

The 5000 lumen+ category is interesting in that four of the five projectors with top sales are laser projectors.  Only the Epson (the lowest cost of them all) is lamp based.

Also of note, Three of the four laser projectors are what I would call “low cost” models – non commercial., that is, lacking interchangeable lenses (which dramatically increases the base price), and usually features such as edge blending and projection mapping, which are usually reserved for higher end digital signage setups.  I suspect that the higher education market is very hot on these lower cost laser projectors for their lower maintenance requirements.  Note, the two Sonys are the same projector but one is WUXGA (more money) the other WXGA.

#1 Epson PowerLite X39XGA resolution, 3500 lumens, $449 MSRP
#2 Epson BrightLink 695Wi3500 lumens, MSRP $2290, 5000 hour lamp life
#3 Epson PowerLite 107XGA resolution, 3500 lumens, $549 MSRP
#4 Epson BrightLink 685WiInteractive, Short-throw lens, MSRP $2090
#5 Epson PowerLite 109W16.0W Mono speaker, 6.2 lbs., 4000 lumens

Wow, in this mainstream projector category, we almost never see one manufacturer sweep all top five spots for a month.  But, this time, Epson did it.  Well, in fairness, they are the one company most likely o pull this off. They have far  more marketshare than their 3 closest competitors combined. (per the 2017 PMA report on marketshare for 2016, Epson had just over 50% of the whole North American market, and #2 had 7%.  (Optoma).  I haven’t seen the 2018 report with 2017 results, so that’s he best info I have on share. -art

When it comes to reporting to you about home entertainment projectors we are increasing our number of reviews of sub-$1000 projectors for home, as well as more pocket projector reviews.

In addition, Nikki, who is definitely enjoys her gaming when not reviewing, or producing our videos, will be doing a few reviews specifically about affordable gaming projectors.  We are implementing these increases for the remainder of 2018 and 2019 going forward.

#2 Epson PowerLite 2250ULarge venue, 10,000 hour lamp, Closed captioning,
#3 Hitachi CP-WU5505Large venue, 5000 lumens, WUXGA resolution, PIP
#4 NEC NP-P502HL-21080p, Full HD 3D, Laser light source
#5 Panasonic PT-RZ570W/BWUXGA, 5200 lumens, Picture-in-picture

Compared to the previous month, in this 5000+ lumen category, we have 3 laser projectors out of the top five in sales.

Note that a Hitachi made the list this month.  Hitachi’s rep is strongest in the education market. Unfortunately, we rarely are offered Hitachi projectors to review.  (some companies make it easy to obtain review units, others – “no so much”  For me, Hitachi and JVC remain challenges when it comes to bringing in projectors.

Our reviews of similar projector models:

Epson PowerLite W29 Projector Review

Note, the W29 is basically the widescreen version of the X29, which as an XGA projector, is apparently very successful among other things, as a replacement for older, lower res classroom projectors.

Epson BrightLink 696U Projector Review

Epson BrightLink 710Ui Interactive Education Projector Review  This recently reviewed interactive projector is similar, but more expensive, due to it being Epson’s flagship interactive, and having a laser light engine.

BTW I pointed out in the mainstream projector group for June, that it’s rare that any company gets all five top selling slots.  Well, they did it again in August with a slightly different mix of models.  If anyone can sweep a category like this one, it would be Epson, as they simply sell far more models of projectors overall, than any competitor, and especially so in the mainstream category, with dozens of models to choose from. -art
