The PU700R is one of the newest DLP based LED light sources equipped units to be added to LG's 2023 lineup of home entertainment projectors.

The LG CineBeam PU700R is a 4K (3,840 x 2,160) Ultra High Definition (UHD) home entertainment projector selling for $1,699 MSRP. This smart projector uses a single Texas Instruments 0.47-inch Digital Light Processing (DLP) Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) to display up to a 120-inch diagonal image. The PU700R uses an RGD LED light source to produce up to 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness for up to 30,000 hours of light source life.

Lg Pu700R Portable Smart Projector - Projector Reviews - Image

The PU700R incorporates a swivel stand.  This type of design is gaining popularity because consumers can quickly go from sitting vertically and projecting onto a wall or screen to laying in bed and projecting the image onto the ceiling or at any point. This form factor resembles the JMGO N1 Ultra and Samsung Freestyle we recently reviewed. To make setup as simple as possible, PU700R can quickly and automatically adjust the keystone and focus on producing a square image at multiple degrees of vertical tilt. The projector can also compensate for side-to-side (horizontal) position changes.

The PU700R uses LG's RGB LED light source, providing a bright, long-lasting image with incredible color depth.

Overview

LG is known for using innovative features and technologies in its projector designs. LG has been in the projection business since CRTs were primarily used as a projector light source. Still, the company took little time to offer innovative video projection products focusing on laser and, more recently, LED light source technologies.

LG is a name-brand manufacturer fearless in occasionally taking a design or function chance. The company is also willing to embrace new designs that may ultimately not change functionality but visually can inspire consumers. The LG PU700R is a projector that meets both those descriptions.

Lg Pu700R Lifestyle Image - Projector Reviews - Image
The LG PU700R provides high-quality 4K images at a very competitive price.

Only a handful of projection companies use a pivoting design, allowing the projector to be reoriented to a wide range of surfaces. Most of these pivoting projectors are smaller and typically offer a brightness well below 500 ANSI lumens, often limited to Full HD (1,920 x 1,080). The Samsung Freestyle is a good example of this type of projector. Click on the link to read our full review of that projector.

The LG PU700R uses an RGB LED light source that generates a manufacturer-rated brightness of 1,000 ANSI lumens and dynamic contrast of 150,000:1. With brightness and contrast numbers like these; you might think that this projector's only screen option would be an Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) screen to help improve the projector's perceived black levels. Not so because the PU700R, according to LG, can maintain a visible image with decent color even in environments with uncontrolled ambient light sources. The ability to display a watchable image could have much to do with LG's RGB LED light source.

Lg Pu700R - RedDot Award Winner - Projector Reviews - Image
LG's RGB LED light source offers depth and dimensionality to projector imagery.

LED projectors can sometimes have excellent lights-on viewing performance. Projectors with high-quality LED light sources can offer superior color contrast even with some laser light sources. Because of this, LED projectors can produce images with more vibrant colors and good black-level detail for a remarkably satisfying viewing experience.

The very nature of LED light source technology should allow the PU700R to deliver more vibrant images than conventional lamp-based projectors. LED light sources also overcome conventional DLP projector issues like the irritating DLP rainbow effect.

The LG PU700R utilizes a Texas Instruments DLP (0.47" DMD) chip to reproduce a displayed resolution of 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160). I say displayed resolution because a 4K DLP chip utilizes pixel (mirror) shifting a native 1,920 x 1,080 to deliver the displayed 4K image. Most people can't see a difference in sharpness when comparing a 4K DLP projector to a native 4K imager.

Another advantage of the PU700R's single-chip DLP design is the lack of convergence issues that could occur with a 3LCD projector. This LG DLP projector will look sharp throughout the projector's life without needing a periodic alignment.

The PU700R features a sealed light path to protect the optics from particles getting into the projector's light engine and obstructing the projected image.

Lg Pu700R Lifestyle Image - Projector Reviews - Image

The PU700R has the same ThinQ AI webOS found in LG's current flat panel lineup. It's a smart projector made by a smart TV manufacturer. LG has incorporated the smart TV elements from their televisions into this projector.

The PU700R offers voice control from both iOS and Android-compatible devices. Users can wirelessly cast or mirror content from iOS or MacOS devices to show off photos and videos, share playlists, or take mobile gaming to epic proportions with Apple AirPlay 2. The PU700R can also receive content cast from a compatible Android phone or tablet.

Lg Pu700R Projector with HDR - Projector Reviews - Image

The PU700R supports HDR-encoded content for HDR10 and HLG. HDR provides dynamic range and color improvements, displaying more detail in the shadows and the bright areas of a projected image and delivering better color range. The extra boost in dark and bright area detail that HDR-encoded content provides can boost the PU700R's overall image quality when projecting onto unusual surfaces and in rooms with uncontrolled light sources.

The PU700R has a built-in 5-watt speaker and Bluetooth connectivity. This projector provides users the ability to connect to two separate Bluetooth speakers or two sets of earphones to be connected simultaneously. Audio will play from up to 2 connected audio devices via the projector. Or, pair an LG or third-party speaker or soundbar with the integrated 5W Mono Speaker. The PU700R also supports Audio Return Channel (ARC) functionality for consumers who want to connect to a soundbar or AV receiver to take full advantage of the high-quality immersive sound available from many of the projector's streaming apps.

When I first unboxed this little projector, I incorrectly thought that this was LG's version of the Samsung Freestyle projector. However, as I began to put it through its paces, it became clear that the LG PU700R is on a completely different level based on its features and specifications. The PU700R is more than a transportable or bedroom projector. This projector is also a very capable home entertainment and even casual gaming projector.

The LG PU700R packs a lot of high-performance technology into its compact and transportable design, making this easily portable projector an excellent choice for the living room, bedroom, or backyard.

The LG CineBeam measures 6.4" x 12" x 5.7" (W x H x D) and weighs 6.8 lbs. (3.08 Kg). Because this is a relatively compact projector, the PU700R can be easily transported to and from multiple locations in the home or out and about. This allows this powerful 4K projector to function as a 4K home entertainment projector and an on-the-go entertainment, communication, and multimedia device, making it one of the most flexible projectors I've reviewed recently.

The LG PU700R can easily be taken on the road, in an RV, or dormitory if there is a place to plug it in. The PU700R can also serve a more traditional role for a homeowner who values owning a high-quality 4K projector that is easy to transport from the living room to the bedroom or out back for an outdoor movie night.

Lg Pu700R Input Panel - Projector Reviews - Image

The pivoting design of the LG PU700R makes it look like a high-end motorized stage light. The front of the PU700R contains the projector's lens, camera, and geometric sensors for automatically focusing and vertical keystone correction.

On the top center of the projector is a single button-like joystick. This one control manages Power On/Off, Volume Up/Down, Menu, and Navigation functions all in one.

The PU700R has one HDMI 2.1 connection with ARC functionality and a USB Type-C connection that supports data and media transfer. In addition, the USB Type-C port also supports PD (Power Delivery) and DP (DisplayPort) ALTERNATE mode. The projector also features a USB Type-A connection next to the HDMI port.

LG has built-in compatibility for various commonly available USB video cameras that, when plugged into the PU700R, allow users to use multiple video conferencing websites via the included web browser.

LENS ASSEMBLY

LG PU700R Lens#1 - Projector Reviews - Image

Per the LG user manual, the manufacturer's recommended projection range for the PU700R is from 60 inches up to 200 inches.

It is important to note that the distance from the projector lens to the projection surface, video format, and zoom setting can all affect the projected image quality and size. I found the projector bright enough to produce a quality image at 100 inches, even when I partially allowed some ambient light into the room.

REMOTE

The PU700R comes with LG's fuller-featured remote control named the Magic Remote. I won't list every button, but this remote has several noteworthy features to discuss. First, in the middle of the remote is a Microphone button used for voice control of the projector and compatible third-party Internet of Things (IoT) devices via the LG ThinQ Assistant

The remote can function as both a traditional-style wireless or as an air mouse or what LG has termed a gyro-mouse allowing you to navigate the menus nonlinearly. This type of operation is familiar to LG smart television and projection systems.

I love that LG has a motion sensor on the remote that turns on the handy button backlight. This is a great feature.

The LG Magic Remote can control a set-top box, Blu-ray player, etc., including powering it on and off. The Magic Remote has all the buttons for day-to-day operation, including power, channel, and playback control.

The PU700R offers an extensive but easy-to-use menu system with the same menu structure used in their smart, flat-panel TV lineup, which is well-organized. It also has two menus: one for making picture adjustments and the other for accessing content, apps, and services.

The Home button, which looks like a house, allows you to access apps and other entertainment services. Once in the projector app menu, you can select a specific input, a streaming app, a web browser, a media player, or explore LG's Content Store.
The Quick Settings button looks like a gear, which takes you directly to the Basic Settings menu. Pressing and holding this button will take you directly to the projector's Advanced Picture settings.

The menu images in this section represent only a fraction of the available sub-menus.

AUTO SCREEN ADJUSTMENT (ASA)

LG uses AI sensing technology that automatically adjusts the projected image when the projection angle does not align with the screen for an optimized viewing experience. With LG ASA, users can enjoy their favorite content without having the projector aligned at the perfect angle.

My experience with this feature could have been better. When ASA works, it is amazing, and when it doesn't the feature ends of misaligning the projector. I found the range of error correction that ASA comes with to be limited. The good new is that users can just turn it off and square the projector manually. LG has made the setup of this projector remarkably easy, providing a range of easy to use geometric adjustment tools to help users get the best image possible especially when the "Auto" correction tools don't always work.

MOOD LIGHTING

The P700R includes seven colorful Mood Lighting options to enhance the ambiance of whatever space it's placed in. LG created the MOOD LIGHTING mode to enhance the user's theater experience by letting users choose from seven vibrant colors to set the scene and create their ideal vibe. The reality is that LG put LED lighting in the base of the projector. User can select from a range of colors for the projector to cycle through from the top of the projectors base or display a single color while using the projector.

The kids will probably love this feature. I quickly shut it off as the LED lights offered no functional value, and I found them distracting.

I would love to see LG integrate the lighting into the projector operation. They could use the lights and colors to indicate features that are on or off or even alert users to potential projector issues. LG could have the LED lights change colors with the dominant color on the screen like many aftermarket LED systems or even have the LEDs flash in time with music being played through the projector.

Maybe the next generation?

PERFORMANCE

The LG PU700RP LED light engine provides up to 30,000 hours of maintenance-free operation. Plenty of lamp-based projectors are in the PU700R price range, but they can't deliver picture quality equal to this projector.

The PU700R projector delivers a good picture whether you're watching HD, 4K, or HDR content. When I first used it, the picture quality looked just as good, if not better, than most other projectors I've seen.

Considering how the projector will be used when evaluating the picture quality is important. The PU700R may not have the best black levels, but that's not a big problem if used in a room with some light. It's more suitable for smaller den or living room screens than large home theaters.

I was impressed with how good SDR content looked on my 120" screen. For HDR content, I prefer more brightness on a large screen, but the PU700R's 1,000 lumens is more than enough for smaller screens up to 90 inches and even in rooms with some uncontrolled ambient light sources.

Overall, I was very happy with the picture quality of the PU700R. It produced a decently bright and vibrant picture that made movies, TV shows, and live sports look great in my room. Pairing it with a good ALR screen helps with this projector's typical DLP black levels. Where this projector really shines is in its color performance and its portability.

The images below are from movies and TV shows, but remember that there might be some color shifting in the pictures. They don't fully represent how good the LG PU700R looks in person.

Out of the box, I was impressed with the color performance of the PU700R. I've reviewed similarly specced LG projectors that utilize LED light sources, like the LG P610. Click on the link to see my full review. Interestingly, the P610 utilized LG's 4LED light source, and the PU700R used LG's RGB 3LED light source. Going into this review, I expected that the picture on this projector would be different from the P610, and I was right. The picture on this projector is better than the P610.

LG engineers have done a good job balancing tuning the projector's picture presets so that the images in most preset picture modes look very good. CINEMA and FILMMAKER modes offer a more neutral color, while the STANDARD mode boosts the color, making it very good for watching animated content. LG also allows users to adjust the projector's overall tone and color temperature to the viewer's preference.

The projector offers different picture modes for SDR and HDR content. My tests showed that the FILMMAKER, CINEMA, and EXPERT modes worked well for SDR content. The CINEMA and FILMMAKER modes were more accurate for HDR content, with better overall dark area detail.

Now, let's talk about the images you see above. They give you an idea of color accuracy, but it's important to remember that colors may look even better in person than on a device screen. Capturing the true colors in photos can be challenging.

Overall, I was quite impressed with the capabilities of the PU700R. I also noticed that this particular model didn't exhibit a strong bias towards green hues, except for the BRIGHTEST mode in both HDR and SDR, where it does so to cut through uncontrolled ambient light sources in the room.

When it comes to achieving accurate skin tones on the PU700R, the EXPERT modes, both bright and dark, really stood out. These modes delivered the most faithful representation of skin tones, crucial for an immersive viewing experience.

Switching over to brighter picture modes such as VIVID, STANDARD, or SPORTS resulted in a pleasant warming of the image and a boost in color saturation, which can help when dealing with unwanted ambient light sources. These brighter modes might still be worth considering to cut through the luminance and maintain a vibrant image effectively. These modes display more color than the brightest picture mode, BRIGHTEST.

The PU700R is bright enough to be used in a variety of spaces, even ones with some uncontrolled ambient light. LG rates its brightness at 1,000 ANSI lumens, and I found that it was overall good enough to get the job done. I was glad that LG decided to use ANSI lumens as the measurement for brightness instead of using a different standard for LED projectors, making it easier to compare LED projectors with other types like laser or lamp-based ones. At Projector Reviews, we always use ANSI lumens to provide a standardized measurement for brightness.

I tested the LG PU700R projector to see how close it came to its rated brightness of 1,000 ANSI lumens. I used the BRIGHTEST mode and set the lamp power mode to MINIMUM energy saving, operating at full power. I took measurements at different positions around the lens, about 15-20% out from the center. The results showed that the PU700R produced 1,110 lumens, 110 lumens brighter than LG's claimed brightness. This projector provides enough brightness for enjoying HDR content on a screen up to 90 inches and SDR content on a 120-inch screen in a dark room.

Here are the measurements for the other available modes on the PU700R:

I doubt anyone reading this will find it surprising that the PU700R is not a projector that can produce deep inky blacks while preserving all the dark area details. I noticed that the blacks appeared more like dark gray, especially during darker scenes at night.

It's important to note that the target environment for the PU700R projector is likely to be family rooms or spaces with higher ambient light. In such environments, achieving ultra-deep black levels isn't possible anyway. Instead, people who buy this projector will benefit more from the PU700R's color performance in rooms with some ambient light sources.

With a rated brightness of 1,000 lumens, the PU700R can deliver vibrant images that pop on a 90" screen, even in a room with ambient light making it suitable for viewing scenarios where maintaining a positive visual experience precedes achieving deep black levels.

SOUND QUALITY

The PU700R's built-in audio system with a 5-Watt mono speaker is sufficient for a portable projector of this size, at least when no other options are available. Surprisingly the sound coming out of the onboard speaker comes across as much fuller than a typical mono projector speaker. It could be better, but it will do the job in a pinch.

The LG PU700R's HDMI 2.0 port supports ARC, which enables higher-quality audio to be sent from the projector to an external audio device such as a soundbar or home theater audio system.

The big story on the PU700R is how LG has implemented Bluetooth on this projector. LG calls it full-sensory immersion. LG allows users to share Bluetooth between two devices for various uses. Dual Bluetooth can connect up to two LG or compatible third-party speakers or pair a speaker and some headphones. The users can even pair a single Bluetooth speaker to function as a rear effects channel with the built-in projector's speaker.

LG XBOOM 360 X03 Speaker - Projector Reviews - Image
LG XBOOM 360 XO3 - Portable Bluetooth Speaker

LG makes a variety of optional Bluetooth speakers that can be connected to this projector to provide better dynamic range and volume compared to the modest built-in speaker output. LG sent me one of their external Bluetooth speakers to use with the projector. The model they sent is the X03QBE XBOOM 360 speaker.

Living up to the XBOOM 360 name, the X03QBE provides a significant increase in the amount of volume and dynamic range, which makes the overall movie experience much more immersive. This XBOOM 360 speaker really does add significant rumble and clarity to the overall movie experience on the PU700R and it is only one of several panorama speakers that LG makes. LG also makes Bluetooth gaming speakers and personal audio speakers. The X03QBE falls in the middle of the LG's line of Bluetooth speakers, selling for an MSRP of $199.

Like the projector, the speaker has adjustable LED mood lighting with various patterns that users can choose from. The ability to connect a Bluetooth speaker to the PU700R is not limited to LG speakers. Still, exclusive features can only be activated when using supported LG Bluetooth speakers, like pairing two speakers to the projector via a dual Bluetooth connection.

For a limited time and only when purchasing the PU700R directly from LG the X03QBE Bluetooth speaker will be included  with the projector. This current promotion runs through July 16th. Should you be reading this review after the end of this promo period be sure to check the LG website because this is the second time LG has paired the X03QBE and the PU700R in a promo and they could very well do it again.

LG has an option available for various audio needs and, more importantly, budgets. Any of these speakers should provide a more immersive audio experience when used alone or together with the PU700R's onboard sound system.

SUMMARY

Lg Pu700R - Featured Image - Projector Reviews - Image

The LG CineBeam PU700R is a home entertainment projector with an impressive 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) (3,840 x 2,160) picture. For $1,699, this smart projector brings high-quality visuals to your living space. It utilizes advanced technology, featuring a single Texas Instruments 0.47-inch Digital Light Processing (DLP) Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) to display stunning images on your screen.

One of the standout features of the PU700R is its use of an RGB LED light source. This light source enables the projector to deliver up to 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness. With up to 20,000 hours of light source life, you can enjoy many hours of entertainment without worrying about frequent bulb replacements. This extended lifespan adds to the projector's overall value and ensures long-term usage. More importantly, the PU700R does a lot with the light provided by the RGB LED light source.

Colors are rich without the typical oversaturation often found on DLP projectors. Skin tones are excellent, and other than the projector's brightest preset mode; the overall hue looked natural without the blueish-green hue I've noticed on other LED projectors by LG.

HDR performance on the projector was decent, with HDR10 content benefiting from increased dark and bright area detail in projected images. The benefits of HDR were not as noticeable as on some brighter LG projectors, but I could see an overall improvement with HDR-encoded content.

The PU700R offers direct access to streaming services like Disney+, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video. These streaming services are excellent; however, the company's webOS store offers fewer video streaming applications than many competitors. Netflix is not available, nor are apps like Paramount Plus and HBO Max.

There are far fewer apps for everything, including general applications and games. The good news is that a range of affordable streaming devices is available for as little as $19.99, up to $149 for premium devices like Apple TV 4K.

Regarding video picture quality, the projector performed well. Although it wasn't flawless, the color accuracy overall was impressive, delivering natural-looking skin tones and good image contrast. The projector is most effective in environments with minimal ambient light, but it can still produce a decent image, even with a lamp in the corner or when the blinds are drawn on a window. While it may not be my top pick for a dedicated home theater projector, its versatility and range of features compensate for the slightly dimmer image.

My biggest issue is with the projector's focus uniformity. The image can be focused razer sharp in the middle of the screen but gets soft quickly, well before the extreme corners of the screen. The result is an image that should be sharper than it is.

COMPETITION

Samsung Freestyle $699 MSRP

The Samsung Freestyle shares a similar look to the LG PU700R, so much so that if you don't see them in person, you may be tempted to this that these two projectors are direct competitors, but they are not however I think it's worth briefly covering why. Both projectors share a similar pivoting design allowing them to project a square image on various surfaces, including irregular ones. Both are smart-enabled and meant to be transportable although the Samsung does have an optional battery that it can use.

The LG is a 4K UHD projector compared to the Samsungs much lower Full HD resolution which is why there is such a big price difference between the two products.

It really comes down to the use case. If you are looking for a truly portable projector that can be used anywhere if the optional battery is charged, then the Samsung Freestyle is the better choice. If you want a 4K UHD projector with higher brightness and contrast that offers a compelling home entertainment experience, then the LG PU700R is the projector you want.

JMGO N1 Ultra $2099 MSRP

The JMGO N1 Ultra is a smart, 4K, triple laser projector selling for an MSRP of $2,099; JMGO says it’s the world’s first 4K laser projector that works like a gimbal allowing it to be set up and easily adjusted. From a design perspective, the N1 Ultra and the PU700R have much in common. Regarding performance and price, they are similarly capable, with the  JMGO offering around 2500 ANSI lumens of brightness and an RGB triple laser light source.

The N1 Ultra is more of a home theater projector that can be transportable than the LG, which is more of a home entertainment projector. As a transportable projector, you get a lot more bang for your buck with the LG selling for $400 less than the JMGO. However, the JMGO offers more than double the brightness and contrast of the LG and features a powerhouse onboard sound system and an RGB laser light source for only a few hundred dollars more.
