The new Epson EF-72 Lifestudio Flex Plus is a stylish $999 MSRP, compact, all-in-one smart mini projector. The EF-72 is built on Epson’s proprietary 3LCD projection technology combined with a high-efficiency RGB-LED light source. The projector’s 3-LCD light source is capable of producing up to 1,000 lumens of brightness (color and white lumens are equal.

Even though each of the three LCD chips has a native 1080p (1920 x 1080) resolution, Epson’s 4K PRO-UHD pixel-shifting to achieve double the on-screen resolution of a normal Full HD projector. When paired with the EF-72’s dynamic contrast ratio of over 5,000,000:1, this creates a picture with a level of depth and detail in both deep shadows and bright highlights you don’t typically find in projectors of this class.

The EF-72’s RGB-LED light source provides not only great color saturation but also a long 20,000-hour lifespan, effectively eliminating the need to replace lamps. Epson’s 3LCD is highly effective, comfortably projecting an image up to 150 inches on practically any surface, transforming any space into a private home theater. The projector also includes advanced image processing that sharpens and optimizes lower-resolution video when upscaled to 4K.

The EF-72 runs on Google TV, a smart media platform that gives you easy access to the largest library of apps and content available today, including major streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, and more. Thanks to Epson’s Intelligent Instant Setup features, getting up and running is easy, using a built-in camera to automatically adjust image geometry, focus, and even avoid projecting over objects like lamps or pictures.

Espon has continued its partnership with Bose on the EF-72, integrating Bose audio to deliver rich, room-filling sound. The EF-72 is designed for more than movies and television; it’s also a very competent gaming projector with about a 20 ms input lag via the projector's HDMI 2.0 connection and supports ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode).

The EF-71 also supports HDR tone mapping and playback of HDR-encoded content, including HDR10- and HLG-mastered movies and shows.

Let’s take a closer look at the Epson EF-72 Lifestudio Flex Plus’s features and performance.

OVERVIEW

Epson_EF72_3LCD

The Epson EF-72 Lifestudio Flex Plus does an excellent job blending home cinema and gaming into a genuinely flexible home entertainment projector. This Epson projector appears to be engineered from the ground up as an all-in-one entertainment hub that delivers high-quality images without the complex setup typically required by many projectors.

At the heart of the EF-72 is Epson’s 3LCD technology, paired with its 4K pixel-shifting system. The projector utilizes a native 1080p (Full HD) chip, but it is equipped with Epson 4K PRO-UHD technology which shifts each pixel to deliver double the onscreen resolution of a traditonal Full HD projector . While not a native 4K chip, this technology consistently delivers a picture that exceeds standard Full HD resolution, offering exceptional detail and sharpness critical to a big-screen experience.

Compare this to a single-chip DLP projector that uses a tiny DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) chip along with a rapidly spinning color wheel. DLP models offer very high white light output because they often include a clear or "white" segment on the color wheel, temporarily boosting overall brightness. However, when displaying a full-color scene, the color light output is often significantly lower than the white lumen rating, resulting in images that are less saturated and dimmer than expected.

The Epson EF-72 uses an RGB-LED light source combined with a 3-chip 3LCD engine, which means the EF-72’s full-color images (like sunsets, grass, or skin tones) are often perceived as more vivid, richer, and brighter than single-chip DLP rivals, especially in rooms with some ambient light. Also, the 3LCD design eliminates the potential for the "rainbow effect" sometimes seen with single-chip DLP projectors.

Epson_EF72_FlexSetup

The Epson EF-72 is a relatively small projector, making it easy to move from room to room or to different locations. One would think that the small form factor would significantly impact the sound quality the projector can produce, but honestly, that’s not the case. Espon solves the common problem of weak sound in smaller projectors through a long-standing partnership with Bose. The EF-72 features a custom-designed, Bose-tuned integrated stereo system that delivers rich, balanced, room-filling audio. This custom implementation includes two 40mm drivers and passive radiators with Bose force-cancelling technology, aiming to provide a clear soundstage with clear dialogue. It even supports Dolby Audio, ensuring dynamic sound that immerses viewers without requiring an immediate investment in external speakers.

The Epson EF-72 fully supports higher-fidelity audio via its eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) compatibility via a single HDMI port. eARC allows the projector to run streaming applications directly from the built-in Google TV OS back through the same HDMI cable to a connected soundbar or AV receiver for the highest possible audio quality.

Epson_EF72_GoogleTV

The EF-72’s design and setup capabilities feature Intelligent Instant Setup technology (sometimes called EpiqSense 2.0) that handles setup in seconds with auto-modes including AUTO FOCUS, AUTO KEYSTONE CORRECTION, AUTO SCREEN FIT, and OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE, which automatically shrinks or repositions the image to avoid light switches or shelves. The projector also features a physically adjustable stand that allows the main body to pivot and tilt up to 180 degrees, enabling you to easily project images onto a wall, a ceiling (perfect for lying in bed), or even the floor.

The Epson EF-72 delivers a complete entertainment ecosystem powered by Google TV, transforming the projector into a smart media hub. A core feature of the built-in Google TV OS is that it eliminates the need for external streaming sticks or extra HDMI cables, a major convenience, especially critical given the projector's single HDMI port.

Access to the Google Play Store, with more than 4 million apps, ensures superior performance and security. You also get fully optimized versions of major streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video. This is a significant advantage over generic projector operating systems, which often force you to use browser workarounds or risk sideloading questionable apps.

Google TV also provides a curated viewing experience through personalized content recommendations and watch lists, offering suggestions based on your watch history across all your services and providing a faster, more intuitive experience. Features like the Google Assistant let you control the projector and connected smart home devices hands-free, letting you change channels, adjust volume, search for movies, or even dim the smart lights in the room without ever leaving the couch.

The Epson EF-72 measures approximately 7.48 inches wide, 9.76 inches deep, and 7.48 inches tall, and it weighs about 7.2 pounds (3.3kg). The projector’s compact size and relatively light weight make it easy to move from room to room or location. The cabinet of the EF-72 is large enough to house its powerful RGB-LED light source and the custom Sound by Bose stereo speaker system.

The lens is centrally located on the projector's front face. Next to the lens is a group of sensors that are essential to the projector's Intelligent Instant Setup modes. A unique physical feature is the unit's adjustable top half, which allows the lens to pivot and tilt for easy ceiling projection.

Epson_EF72_PJBProdShot#7

The projector’s connections are located on the rear of the unit. They include a single HDMI 2.0 input that supports both eARC (Audio Return Channel) and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode). This enables one-cable audio return to a soundbar or AVR and automatic low-latency switching for compatible gaming sources.

Wireless support is robust, including Wi-Fi connectivity on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and Bluetooth for accessories like headphones or external speakers. The built-in Google TV OS handles all streaming and media playback, eliminating the need for a separate streaming device. Media can also be accessed from a USB port, allowing the EF-72 to serve as a complete, self-contained entertainment system.

Epson_EF72_PJBProdShot#_Lens

The Epson EF-72 includes several features to streamline setup, like AUTO FOCUS and AUTO SCREEN ALIGNMENT that run remarkably quickly, with little to no noticeable searching. AUTO KEYSTONE CORRECTION allows the projector to detect and correct any distortion caused when projecting onto an uneven surface or at a non-perpendicular angle. The AUTO OBSTACLE AVOIDANCE feature can detect objects on the wall, such as pictures or shelving, and automatically adjust the image to compensate for the obstruction, eliminating the need for tedious manual resizing.

For safety, the Epson EF-72 incorporates AUTO EYE PROTECTION. This essential feature uses sensors to detect when someone approaches the projector's front and immediately turns off the light source to prevent potential eye discomfort or damage, which is incredibly useful when the projector is placed in a high-traffic area or when children are present.

Even though it lacks optical zoom, the Epson EF-72’s fixed-focus lens does have digital scaling and placement for image size adjustments. While optical zoom typically provides a clearer image across a wide range of throw distances, the EF-72 compensates by featuring advanced Intelligent Instant Setup modes. These auto modes allow the projector to quickly and accurately dial in the image size and geometry.

Epson_EF72_ScreenSize

The EF-72 has a F 1.6 lens system designed to make the most of its portable design, providing optical performance optimized for flexible use cases rather than a fixed installation. It features a fixed throw ratio of 1.20:1 and can project an image from 30 inches to 150 inches using only digital zoom. This projector can project a large image from a relatively short distance, with a projection distance ranging from 2.6 feet (0.8 meters) to 13.1 feet (4 meters). The EF-72’s lens has a 7:1 offset, allowing easy placement below the screen, meaning you don’t have to make significant use of keystone correction.

The remote control included with the Epson EF-72 is larger than a Google TV remote, but it shares most of the common button layouts. It features dedicated quick-access buttons for several major built-in streaming services, commonly including Netflix, YouTube, and Prime Video. These buttons ensure immediate access to your most-used entertainment platforms, complementing the projector’s intuitive, personalized Google TV home screen.

The projector remote has a dedicated Google Assistant button that activates several features, including voice search, menu navigation, access to select apps, and even control of a wide range of compatible IoT (Internet of Things) devices integrated into the Google Home ecosystem to manage your viewing experience and smart environment.

The Epson EF-72 uses a menu and control system based on the Google TV operating system. While the EF-72 actually consists of two separate menu systems, Epson has done a phenomenal job of interweaving the core Epson menus with the Google TV interface. Epson has done such a good job that at first, I was convinced this projector was controlled exclusively by Google TV. While this is not the case, the integration between the two environments is almost seamless, and for the most part, behaves as one.

The front-end is entirely Google TV; this is the operating system that greets you on startup, handling all the smart features, streaming applications, personalized recommendations, voice commands, and external HDMI input selection, meaning this is where you will spend the majority of your time. Google TV OS provides EF-72 users with access to thousands of native applications without the need for an external streaming stick. Google TV delivers the best overall app performance and security by receiving regular updates and being optimized for the big screen, eliminating the need for risky sideloading or clunky, low-resolution streams often found on generic projector platforms. Google TV streamlines the user experience by providing curated content recommendations across all your most-used services. The Google Assistant offers hands-free control of many core menu features and consolidates access to the projector’s core hardware settings, making the EF-72 exceptionally easy to set up and use.

Access the projector's essential hardware and image adjustments by pressing the Settings button on the remote with the gear icon. This button opens a separate menu system, the back-end, where you can find deep controls like the projector’s preset picture modes (CINEMA NATURAL DYNAMIC, etc.), detailed image adjustments like brightness, contrast, and sharpness, and other projector settings like setup or maintenance features modes.

The EF-72 consolidates access to both environments into a single, easily reachable Dashboard, allowing you to quickly jump to the precise Epson menu you need without rebooting or fully navigating out of the Google TV environment.

The Epson EF-72 has four preset SDR picture modes: STANDARD, CINEMA, VIVID, and NATURAL modes. The most accurate are CINEMA and NATURAL modes. The main difference between these modes is that CINEMA prioritizes accurate color temperature, gamma, and color space coverage, resulting in a warm, cinematic, and balanced picture that is closest to industry standards like Rec.709. The NATURAL mode provides a more subtle image, which I found best for general viewing in rooms with some uncontrolled ambient light. The STANDARD mode is a good option since it is slightly cooler and more saturated.

The EF-72’s three LCD chips (One each for Red, Green, and Blue) offer multiple benefits over single-chip projection systems like DLP. The EF72 delivers equal 1,000 color lumens and 1,000 white lumens, offering a higher perceived brightness than single-chip systems. Equal amounts of color and white lumens or brightness are key to the EF-72 color performance because it ensures that all colors are rendered with maximum brightness, making videos like animated films or landscapes appear punchy and vivid. As an added bonus, 3LCD projectors eliminate the "rainbow effect" that is often found on single-chip DLP projectors. This is especially noticeable in fast-moving scenes, such as the light cycle race earlier in Tron: Legacy.

For those who want to fine-tune the projector's image quality, the EF-72 includes advanced color adjustments in its internal CMS (color management system). I was incredibly impressed with the projector's out-of-the-box color performance, and though Epson has provided the ability to fine-tune the EF-72's color settings, I think most users will be quite happy with the projector's factory presets.

For those who want to fine-tune the projector's image quality, the EF-72 includes all the image adjustments found on Hisense Laser TVs and higher-end Lifestyle projectors. You can easily use several free test patterns found on the Murideo website and their YouTube channel to adjust the projector's brightness, gamma, and contrast. Murideo also has detailed written instructions for using its test patterns in the resource section of its website. Also, check out our YouTube video on using several test patterns called "Optimize The Image of a Projector or TV Using Free Murideo Test Patterns."

Epson lists the manufacturer's rated brightness as 1,000 lumens. While not the highest brightness rating available in this projector’s price range, the fact that the projector’s 3LCD system delivers equal white and color lumens boosts the EF-72’s perceived brightness compared with single-chip DLP systems. In short, this projector looks brighter than it actually is.

To calculate this projector's brightness, I set its light source to its highest setting, then took 3-4 readings about 15-20% out from the center of the lens.

I set the EF-72 in the brightest picture preset, STANDARD mode. In STADARD mode, the Epson EF-72 measured 1041 lumens, slightly higher than the manufacturer's brightness claim but not by too much. I measured all four picture modes. The results are below.

The Epson EF-72 can project an image from 30 inches to 150 inches using only digital zoom. I wish I could say the contrast and black-level performance of the Epson EF-72 are on par with its color performance, but unfortunately, the overall contrast and, in particular, the black levels are average.

In my testing, the EF-72 fell short of my expectations and of better-performing competitors when it comes to displaying black and dark details alongside highlights. The picture on the EF-72 is certainly easy to watch, but this projector lacks the aggressive dynamic range found in some competitors in the lifestyle projector category. Candidly, Epson seems to have gone out of its way to set this high expectation by claiming "Over 5,000,000:1" dynamic contrast.

In my real-world testing, I found the projector’s shadow detail lacking and its black levels more gray than black. I struggled to distinguish details in dark areas across a range of scenes in movies like The Batman, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Aquaman without turning up the projector's gamma settings.

The Epson EF-72 delivers better SDR and HDR image quality than most portable projectors

The EF-72 supports HDR10 and HLG (High Dynamic Range) formats and includes adjustable HDR tone mapping. In my totally light-controlled space, I used HDR CINEMA mode with the projector set to all factory default settings. If you are using the EF-72 in a room with some amount of uncontrolled ambient lighting and are going to be viewing HDR content, I would recommend using the projector's GAMMA or SCENE ADAPTIVE GAMMA modes to improve dark area detail. There’s also the option of using an ALR (ambient light rejecting) screen.

Unfortunately, the EF-72 does not offer switchable DYNAMIC TONE MAPPING. I think using the GAMMA mode adjustments is acceptable and worth using when watching most HDR content, especially on larger screens. Remember, most HDR content will appear dimmer than SDR material, so switching to SDR on a large screen, especially with a 1000-lumen projector like the EF-72, may not be a bad idea.

The Epson EF-72 is generally a good gaming projector for casual and mainstream console gaming. Still, it is not a high-performance gaming display, as its latency is around 20 ms, not the hyper-fast 4.2 ms you can find on some dedicated gaming projectors. That said, I didn’t have any issues playing the first-person shooters I normally play on my Xbox Series X. I couldn’t detect any significant input lag between my pressing a button on my controller and the corresponding action on the screen. In the end, that’s what you want when gaming on a projector. The projector rendered the game's colors very well, and I didn’t notice any visual artifacts in the games I played.

This projector has a dedicated GAME mode with an approximately 20 millisecond input lag at both 1080p and 4K (60Hz). Low enough for most titles. The projectors ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) allows it to automatically switch to GAME mode for the fastest response time when a supported console is connected.

The EF-72’s 4K Pro-UHD image delivers clarity and sharpness on my 110-inch matte-white screen.

The EF-72 features a Bose-tuned stereo system that delivers rich, balanced audio. This sound system features two 40mm drivers and passive radiators with Bose force-cancelling technology, providing a very nice soundstage with clear dialogue. It even supports Dolby Audio, ensuring dynamic sound that immerses viewers without requiring an immediate investment in external speakers.

The Epson EF-72 features two-way Bluetooth functionality, meaning it can act as both a receiver and a transmitter. This gives you flexibility in how you handle audio and connect accessories. The projector can transmit audio wirelessly to an external speaker, a soundbar, or a pair of wireless headphones. The projector's integrated Bose speaker system can act as a standalone Bluetooth speaker. This means you can stream music directly from a compatible smartphone or tablet to the EF-72, even when the projector itself is powered down or not displaying an image.

The Epson EF-72 includes several preset sound modes designed for different types of content. These modes are STANDARD, CINEMA, MUSIC, and VOICE.

For a compact projector, the sound of the Epson EF-72 is quite good. It’s not the loudest lifestyle projector I’ve heard, but it will fill a living room without distorting the audio, even at maximum volume. The EF-72’s onboard sound cannot match the range or bass response of a dedicated soundbar, let alone a full AV receiver and speaker system, but this is also a strong case for using an external sound source with the eARC-compatible HDMI output. Epson put it there for a reason.

The EF-72 produced an overall good-looking image with warm, cinematic colors thanks to its 3LCD technology, powered by an RGB LED light source. While the colors are quite good, there is a sacrifice in contrast and black-level performance. Put simply, the EF-72 struggles to deliver dark blacks and deep shadow detail in anything but a completely dark room, and even then, blacks are more gray.

The EF-72 is ultimately best suited for users who are looking for the best overall combination of convenience, flexible placement, and smart features.

The EF-72 supports HDR10 and HLG, but not HDR10+ or Dolby Vision. The EF-72 does feature Dynamic Tone Mapping, but it’s not adjustable except when switching between the four built-in picture modes. The projector offers fine-tuning of GAMMA and COLOR settings and a range of CONTRAST and GAMMA adjustments in both SDR and HDR modes.

The EF-72 is a good projector for casual and console gaming, featuring a dedicated GAME mode with built-in Auto Low Latency Mode. In GAME mode, the input lag can be as low as 20ms when playing 1080p and 4K 60 Hz content.

Whether you're planning movie nights, casual or console gaming sessions, or to just bingeing your favorite Netflix show, the Epson EF-72 delivers a really easy-to-set-up and view home entertainment experience.
