Projector Reviews Images

Art visited the Dell Booth at InfoComm 2019, where he came upon a unit he reviewed before – the Dell S718QL. This ultra short throw projector was displayed in a custom cabinet where it was inset into the credenza itself. There are several manufacturers of custom cabinetry for ultra short throw projectors (Salamander Designs is one, and they were present at InfoComm this year) and some that specialize in specific manufacturers.

In the Dell Booth, the S718QL was up against some serious ambient light. Trade shows are known for rather pervasive lighting, and many manufacturers will put up walls or makeshift ceilings above their projector displays to protect the projected image against ambient light. Not Dell, though. This projector had the whole of the trade show lighting experience raining down on the projector screen. The screen looked to be an Ambient Light Rejecting screen especially designed for ultra short throw projectors, but even still, the S718QL performed admirably.

The Dell S718QL

Dell S718QL - Laser projector

When Art published his review of the Dell S718QL in March of 2018, the first line dubs the projector as “pretty impressive!” This is a laser projector that can be used in both business/education applications, and home entertainment. It has 4K UHD resolution (2716x1528 x2), and is a pixel shifter. It’s nicely bright, with a 5,000 lumen claim, and features that ultra short throw design. It’s a DLP projector that can project up to 124” diagonal, and has an MSRP of $5,999, with a current street price of around $1,000 less.

The Dell S718QL has a media player that works with Microsoft Office. It also has Split Screen, Portrait Mode, and PC-Free Presenting. These features make it well suited for business and education applications. It has Bluetooth audio, so you can sync your external Bluetooth speakers if you want more than the built-in speaker (6-watt stereo), which works in both business/education and home entertainment environments.

You’ll notice I say “home entertainment” rather than “home theater.” That is because, simply put, this is not a dedicated home theater projector. For the price point, you can find one much better suited to that purpose. In Art’s review, he talks about the color of the Dell S718QL:

“The brightest mode, as usual, leaves a lot to be desired. All the others are different, but are pretty good. None, however, would make for really good home theater use, out of the box with no adjustments – the modes are just not accurate enough. Calibrated though… it can be a bright, 4K UHD home entertainment projector, although still not as good as most dedicated home theater projectors.”

We understand that the sheer amount of possibilities can be overwhelming when projector shopping, which is why we go to trade shows like InfoComm and CES. Canon displayed five projectors at InfoComm 2019, ranging from WXGA resolution to 4K. Art took a stroll through the Canon booth while he was at the convention in Orlando, Florida, back in June. The five projectors featured in this video are the LX-MU500Z, LX-MU502Z, WUX7500, WUX7000Z, and the 4K6020Z. Before we dive into that video, let’s take a quick look at each of these projectors and what they have to offer.

Canon LX-MU500Z

Canon LX-MU500Z

The $2,999 Canon LX-MU500Z is a 5,000 lumen DLP projector with a laser light engine. The projector features excellent placement flexibility thanks to a 1.60:1 zoom lens with manual lens shift – that’s +50% vertical, +23% horizontal – and HDBaseT. This projector has an excellent warranty! 5 years parts and labor, including the Advanced Warranty Service Exchange Program and Service Loaner Program.

Canon LX-MH502Z

Canon LX-MH502Z

The Canon LX-MH502Z is a $5,390 laser projector with 4K UHD resolution (3840x2160). Also 5,000 lumens, this projector can produce an image of up to 300 inches! The LX-MH502Z, too, has excellent placement flexibility. It has a 1.60:1 zoom lens with manual lens shift, this time +60% vertical, +23% horizontal, and HDBaseT. In addition to all this, the projector has 360° positioning. The LX-MH502Z has the same awesome warranty as the LX-MU500Z.

Canon Realis WUX7500

Canon-Realis-WUX7500

The Canon REALiS WUX7500 is a lamp based projector with LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) technology, and an MSRP of $8,749 ($5,150 street). This particular projector boasts 7,500 lumens and WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution. It’s another projector that has excellent placement flexibility – more so than the previous two – in that this WUX7500 has six interchangeable lens options, including an ultra short throw lens with generous lens shift (+15%, -75% vertical, +30% horizontal), and HDBaseT. It also has WiFi.

Canon Realis WUX7000Z

Canon-Realis-WUX7000Z

The Canon REALiS WUX7000Z has WUXGA (1920x1200) and a laser light engine, and LCOS technology (all higher-end Canon projectors have this technology). It has an MSRP of $10,199 ($8,549 street price), 7,000 lumens, and the same six interchangeable lenses available to the lower-cost WUX7500. The projector features HDBaseT, wireless capabilities, DICOM SIM., Edge Blending, Geometric Correction, HDR, and Crestron RoomView. The WUX7000Z has 360° positioning, allowing the projector to be installed in portrait mode, which is great for digital signage.

Canon Realis 4K6020Z

Canon-4K6020Z

With the Canon REALiS 4K6020Z, we see a huge jump in price. This laser based LCOS projector has true 4K resolution (4096x2160) and 6,000 lumens, for a whopping $47,999. It’s a projector for commercial applications, and has seven interchangeable lenses for excellent placement flexibility. It features HDR, Advanced Calibration Settings, Motion Blur Reduction, and Edge Blending. The 4K6020Z also featured advanced networking via integrated software like Crestron RoomView, Extron XTP and AMX.

Sony has been a leader in the projector industry for decades, manufacturing both home theater and business/education projectors. This year at InfoComm, Sony had five projectors on display ranging from entry level to high end. Sony is well known for their superior black level performance – something that extends beyond their home theater projectors to their high-end business/education projectors – and great color, right out of the box.

This video features the five projectors Sony had on display at their booth for InfoComm 2019. Those are the Sony VPL-PHZ10, VPL-FHZ75, VPL-FHZ120L, VPL-GTZ240, and the VPL-GTZ270. Let’s take a quick look at each projector before diving into the video:

SONY VPL-PHZ10

We reviewed the VPL-PHZ10 in April of 2017, and it was included in our Affordable Laser Projectors article written just a few months prior. The Sony VPL-PHZ10 has a street price of right around $2,500, depending on where you look, and is a WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution projector boasting 5,000 lumens and a laser light engine with a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours. It has an excellent warranty – 5 years or 12,000 hours, whatever comes first.

SONY-VPL-FHZ75

The Sony VPL-FHZ75 is a brand new 6,500 lumen laser projector that we will be reviewing in August. We reviewed its predecessor, the FHZ61, last year. Compared to that model, it’s got upgraded processing and new 3LCD panels. The FHZ75 has 7 interchangeable lens options with up to 70% vertical lens shift and 360-degree projection, giving this projector a lot of placement flexibility. It features Reality Creation, Edge Blending, Auto Calibration, and Auto Filter Cleaning.

SONY-VPL-FHZ120L

The Sony VPL-FHZ120L is a heavy hitter – 12,000 lumens, WUXGA (1920x1200) resolution, and a laser light engine. It, too, has upgraded processing with Reality Creation (a Sony signature), and is well suited for large venue environments such as auditoriums, lecture halls, entertainment venues, and houses of worship. It has interchangeable lens options, with up to 107% vertical lens shift! That’s impressive. Speaking of impressive – so is the price tag: $27,000.

SONY-VPL-GTZ240

The Sony VPL-GTZ240 is a 2,000 lumen, 4K projector (4096x2160) with a laser light engine that has a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours. It features Reality Creation, which upscales lower resolution images to 4K using advanced pixel shifting technology. The GTZ240 also has Motion Flow, Advanced Motion Blur Reduction, 3D, a high contrast ratio, and up to +80% lens shift (it has two interchangeable lens options). Though it looks like Sony’s typical home theater projectors, this one is listed under their professional product line, and goes for $34,000.

SONY-VPL-GTZ270

A beast of a projector, the Sony VPL-GTZ270 boasts 5,000 lumens, native 4K resolution (4096x2160), and a laser light engine that lasts up to 20,000 hours. Like the GTZ240, this projector features Reality Creation and support for HDR. It even tackles the expanded BT.2020/P3 color space for deeper, richer colors. A projector like this would be well suited for large venue environments such as auditoriums, lecture halls, and scientific applications such as viewing engineering renderings. It also features nine calibrated picture presets, sealed optics, Edge Blending, Motionflow, Auto Calibration and 3D capabilities.

We understand that the sheer amount of possibilities can be overwhelming when projector shopping, which is why we go to trade shows like InfoComm and CES. The Optoma P1 4K Laser Cinema is a 3,000 lumen, 4K UHD, ultra short throw projector designed for the home. It has a $2,999 list price, and, its got smarts. The Optoma P1 can project a 120” image from just inches away to achieve that size, and can sit on a low table or credenza. The projector fully supports HDR10 and HLG (hybrid log gamma) for streaming 4K. It even features a built-in soundbar by NuForce, which features Dolby Digital 2.0. For those of you who want to use your own external sound system, there is an Audio Out to do so – we do recommend that for serious movie watching.

The video features the Optoma P1 4K Laser Cinema projector, and an interview from an Optoma representative at InfoComm 2019. We snagged this demo to give you an inside look into what the projector is capable of. We hope to have this one in for review soon! Check out Art’s article on the Optoma P1 to see his opinions on this 4K UHD ultra short throw projector. Spoiler alert: Art says this one could be a “game changer.”

The LG Signature OLED TV R is one of the most talked about products from CES 2019. This OLED TV features a retractable 65” screen with 4K resolution. It effectively solves the biggest problem of current TVs on the market – when not in use, that 65” screen or larger becomes this giant, dark eyesore on your wall or TV stand. Being retractable, that dark screen slides nicely into the attractive base of the Signature OLED TV R, which frees up space and opens up the room, while still providing you with instant entertainment at the push of a button.

LG unveiled their prototype of this product at CES 2018, and its reappearance at this year’s convention came with the promise that the Signature OLED TV R will ship later this year. Pricing has not been released yet, but as with all innovative entertainment products, we expect the price point to be higher than your average OLED TV. Time will tell, though! As mentioned, it features 4K resolution – with HDR. That means your 4K UHD Blu-ray disks will look gorgeous on this TV, and, if you don’t believe us, just check out the video!

The Optoma P1 Smart 4K UHD Laser Cinema is an ultra short throw projector with smarts. This 3,000 lumen projector is intended for living rooms and family rooms in addition to dedicated home theaters, as Optoma aims to take 4K out of the home theater and “put it everywhere,” according to Jon Grodem from Optoma, who we met with this year at CES 2019 to discuss their newest projector. The Optoma P1, however, is more than just a projector – it’s a home entertainment system.

The P1 comes equipped with an integrated soundbar by NuForce, which features individual woofers, aluminum full-range drivers and isolated speaker enclosures for robust sound – much higher quality than what you can expect from any standard built-in speakers. Much like the Optoma UHD51A, the P1 has Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant built in, only we can expect their function to be higher than what we saw with the UHD51A at last year’s CEDIA, as Optoma has since made many improvements.

In this video, the Optoma P1 is being projected on a 100” ambient light rejecting screen, and the room is not fully darkened. The projector is capable of producing an image of up to 120” diagonally. The Optoma P1 was unveiled at CES 2019 and is expected to ship in Q2 of this year. Enjoy the video!

The BenQ LU950 is a 5,000 lumen, WUXGA (1920 x 1200) DLP projector with laser light engine, claiming up to 20,000 hours. It has an RGBY color wheel (yellow slice), which is unusual – the typical color wheels we see on DLP projectors are RGBRGB or RGBW. With excellent color, a great feature set, and a low list price of $2,799, this installation projector may be “the one” for your business or education applications, whether in a K-12 classroom, boardroom, retail space, house of worship, or entertainment venue.

This BenQ is nicely sharp and provides an image that is pretty true-to-color. It has low maintenance, thanks to no filters and having a sealed light path and dust-preventing technology, making the cost of ownership low over its lifetime. It has a healthy 1.60:1 zoom lens, a generous amount of lens shift (60% vertical, 23% horizontal), and HDBaseT, giving the projector a lot of placement flexibility. The LU950 supports secure wireless presenting, and can be daisy chained with multiple LU950s to create many projected images, or be image stacked to double, triple, or even quadruple the brightness – but more on that in our full review.

This summary video features video clips from “Ultimate Wave Tahiti” by Stephen Low Productions and photos of the projector in action. The video clips have rolling bands of color that are not present when viewing in person – they are an artifact produced by an interaction between the frame rate of our DSLRs and the color wheel of the projector. The photos give a much better taste of what the projector can do – it has excellent color, right out of the box, is nicely sharp, and is easy to set up! Check out the video to see if this projector suits your business or education applications, and, if it’s a possible contender – check out our BenQ LU950 review.

There are so many options to choose from when searching for the right projector for your classroom or business. How do you choose? We understand that the sheer amount of possibilities can be overwhelming, which is why we are putting out these videos. Our long and short versions of the BenQ LU950 here to serve as an overview of the projector, so that you can get an idea of the projectors’ specs, special features, hardware, etc., and decide quickly about whether it’s worth your time to read its review. If this video is positive and enthusiastic about the projector, is simply because the review itself was positive and enthusiastic. We try to make the videos more fun, a bit less dry, with far less technical detail. Enjoy, but also visit the full review for more depth, even the settings that work best. Thanks! - Art

CEDIA 2018 saw the unveiling and demonstration of many an impressive projector, and perhaps the most notable of such projectors is Digital Projection’s INSIGHT LASER 8K. The INSIGHT LASER 8K is intended for commercial use in areas such as simulation and visualization projects, museums, and elite entertainment venues, for applications that require the highest resolution available.

This impressive DLP projector from Digital Projection uses six panels to get to the 8K standard, which is new and ever-evolving. The INSIGHT LASER 8K’s DLP technology consists of 3 x 1.38” DarkChip™ DMD™ and Digital Projection’s ColorMax™ technology, giving the projector brilliant color accuracy and deep black levels – something you will see evidence of in our video below.

The Digital Projection INSIGHT LASER 8K is, as its name would suggest, a projector with a solid-state laser light engine. It boasts a wall-melting 25,000 lumens – quite obviously, this is enough to blow any ambient light out of the water and maintain excellent brightness on a massive screen. The projector will be shipping in Q3 of this year, 2018.

Check out our video of the Digital Projection INSIGHT LASER 8K in action, with video taken from the live demonstration at CEDIA 2018. The video was filmed by Art Feierman on his iPhone X in 4K – our video, however, was rendered at 1080p.

The NEC PX1005QL is a native 4K projector for commercial applications. This 10,000 lumen projector is ideal for boardrooms and conference rooms where video meetings are held, as it offers high brightness for those wide windows and an awesome feature for meetings. The PX1005QL can project four 1080p images on the screen at once, allowing for four video conference calls at a time.

This projector is also suitable for large venue environments such as auditoriums, lecture halls, and houses of worship. That 10,000 lumen claim is bright enough to project a large image with vibrant color, even in the face of ambient light. The last commercial-grade NEC projector we reviewed had rather excellent color and about half the brightness of the PX1005QL, and we considered that to be of such great value that it won an award in our 2018-2019 Best in Classroom Education Projectors Report.

It is a laser-based projector, so it has a light engine life of up to 20,000 hours, making it lower maintenance than its lamp-based counterparts. The NEC PX1005QL has motorized functions such as powered zoom and focus, and has interchangeable lens options for greater placement flexibility. The projector has Edge Blending capabilities, which allows for multiple units to project a seamless image when positioned side by side.

The NEC PX1005QL was unveiled at Infocomm 2018. Enjoy the video!
