Overview

BenQ-X300G-Game-Controller - Projector Reviews Images

The BenQ X300G is one of the most recent additions to the company's growing family of gaming projectors. The BenQ X Series projectors are designed with premium gaming consoles such as the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Nintendo Switch in mind. The new X300G adds to all the best technology from previous projectors in the series, creating the most immersive gaming experience available on a BenQ gaming projector.

Since the BenQ X300G is designed for gamers, it includes a low input lag mode, which reduces the delay between input and onscreen action. This feature is crucial for competitive gaming, where even a slight delay can impact performance. The input lag ranges from 4.16ms in 1080P@240Hz, 8ms in 1440P@120Hz, 16ms in 4K@60Hz.

Benq-X300G-Gaming-Modes
The Auto Game Mode identifies your console and instantly recalls your previous game mode settings

The projector also supports various gaming modes that optimize the picture quality for different types of games, ensuring an immersive and responsive gaming experience. Like the X3100i we reviewed earlier, the X300G offers four specialized gaming modes, each tailored to optimize visuals and performance according to different game genres. Whether it's a high-speed shooter or a visually detailed RPG, these modes adjust the projector’s settings to suit the specific demands of each game type.

  1. FPS (First-Person Shooter): Optimized for fast-paced action and enhanced visibility in dark areas.
  2. RPG (Role-Playing Game): Enhances color vibrancy and detail for immersive world exploration.
  3. SPG (Sports Game): Tuned for smooth motion handling and realistic skin tones for sports enthusiasts.
  4. RCG/HDR-RCG (Racing Game / HDR Racing Game): Prioritizes clarity, smoothness, and vibrant colors to capture the speed and excitement of racing games with highlighted engine and road sounds.

When AGM (Auto Game Mode) is enabled the X300G can identify the gaming console being utilized at any given time. Auto Game Mode identifies Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch console inputs, instantly recalling your previous game mode settings for a tailor-made gaming experience.

Another notable gaming related feature is the SettingXchange, enabling gamers to effortlessly download and share optimized projector settings created by professional gamers and enthusiasts alike.

Use the SettingXchange to download or share projector settings.

Gaming on a large projection screen offers several advantages over using a flat-panel TV. One of the primary benefits is the sheer size of the image. A large projection screen can create a more immersive experience, making gamers feel as though they are truly part of the game world. This is particularly impactful in games with expansive environments or cinematic sequences.

Additionally, projectors like the X300G can provide a more theater-like experience for movies, with the large screen size enhancing the visual impact and making it more enjoyable to watch films as they were intended to be seen.

The X300G is bundled with a QS-02 streaming media stick. The QS-02 is BenQ's most powerful streaming media stick and runs on Android 11. Since it is running the latest Android OS, the dongle supports all the major streaming services including Netflix.

Whether you are watching movies or playing games, BenQ believes color accuracy is critical, so the X300G includes their proprietary CinematicColor technology. This technology ensures that the colors displayed are as close to the original source material as possible, making the X300G an excellent choice for film enthusiasts and professionals who require precise color representation. The X300G supports a wide color gamut, covering up to 84% of the DCI-P3 color space, which is the standard used in the film industry. This allows the X300G to display a broader range of colors with greater accuracy.

BenQ X300G supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) content mastered in HDR10 and HLG. Like the higher end X3100i, the X300G is equipped with BenQ’s HDR Pro technology which includes tone mapping and dynamic light source dimming to ensure excellent HDR picture quality.

While most flat-panel TVs have abandoned this feature, the X300G still supports 3D, so users can play 3D games and watch compatible 3D movies. While 3D content is no longer taking the world of movies and gaming by storm, many gamers and movie enthusiasts still have 3D titles in their catalogs. The projector supports all the popular 3D formats, including Frame Sequential, Frame Packing, Top-Bottom, or Side by Side. However, to watch 3D you will need to acquire 3D glasses, which are not included with the unit.

To simplify setup, the X300G includes features such as keystone correction and lens shift, which allow for flexible installation and alignment of the projected image. Keystone correction helps to adjust the image when the projector is placed at an angle, ensuring that it remains rectangular and undistorted. Lens shift allows for vertical and horizontal movement of the lens, making it easier to position the image correctly without moving the entire projector. These features are particularly useful for those with limited space or unconventional room layouts.

Due to the projector’s built-in 8-watt x 2 speaker system and advanced audio technology, users can enjoy good sound without additional audio equipment, simplifying the setup and saving space. The X300G also includes custom-tuned audio modes to ensure the sound is optimized for different types of content, providing a versatile solution that adapts to the user’s needs.

When it comes to connectivity, the BenQ X300G includes a range of ports and wireless options, making it easy to connect various devices. Users can connect their gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, and streaming devices via HDMI, while the USB ports allow for direct playback of media files.

BenQ-X300G-USB-PD-Input - Projector Reviews Images
The USB-C port supports DisplayPort output (DP Alt Mode) and power delivery (PD outputs), so it can display content from a console or mobile deveice while charging it

While HDMI is the primary way to connect the X300G to most sources, the projector's USB-C port supports DisplayPort output and power delivery. The USB-C port can be used to connect the projector to a mobile device, laptop, or even a Nintendo® Switch. The X300G can even charge the Nintendo Switch while projecting gaming content. This is also nice because you don’t need to carry the Switch’s docking station or AC power supply with you. When paired with a portable gaming console like the Nintendo, the X300G delivers an amazing gaming experience nearly anywhere.

Additionally, the projector supports wireless casting, enabling users to stream content from their smartphones, tablets, and laptops without cables. Overall, the X300G is a great portable lifestyle projector for not only gamers but also home entertainment enthusiasts looking for good picture and sound quality from a compact package.

The BenQ X300G is designed for portability and ease of setup. Its sleek and modern chassis blends seamlessly into any environment. The projector’s compact dimensions are approximately 8.3 inches wide, 7.7 inches deep, and 7.1 inches high, making it easy to transport and set up. Despite its compact size, the X300G is robustly built, ensuring durability and longevity.

Weighing around 6.6 pounds, the X300G is relatively lightweight for a projector of its capabilities, which adds to its portability. Being so lightweight allows users to move the projector between different rooms or locations without much hassle. The design also includes a convenient handle, further enhancing its portability.

In addition to the lens, the front of the chassis holds the IR sensor and the ToF (Time of Flight) that enabled auto focus,, auto 3D keystone correction and auto eye protection. On the top of the X300G's is a control panel. It has a Power Off/On button, an source button, a Back button, a Menu button and a joystick which allowing you to quickly navigate to your desired settings without using a remote.

The rear of the unit holds a compartment for the QS02 Android TV 11 dongle and an exhaust vent. There are speaker grills on both sides of the projector and, in addition, the right side houses the air inlet. All the projector's inputs and connection are located on the right side along with an exhaust vent.

The inputs on the side of the BenQ X300G includes a single HDMI connection, a USB Type-C port, and USB-A input. The HDMI ports support HDCP 2.2, ensuring compatibility with the latest 4K content. Since the HDMI features an Audio Return Channel (ARC), the projector can output audio to an ARC-compatible speaker/soundbar connected via an HDMI cable.

The USB-C connection supports DisplayPort along with power input/output. It can connect the projector to a mobile device, laptop, or even a Nintendo® Switch. It can even charge a connected device while projecting content from it. Using a USB-IF-certified cable, the GP100A is able to supply power to a connected USB-IF-certified device. Supported USB-C power delivery output:

  • 5V/1.5A
  • 9V/1.5A
  • 12V/1.5A
  • 15V/1.2A

When a USB Drive is connected to the projector's USB-A input, the projector's built-in media can play music and videos and display photos. In the rear compartment where you connect the QS02 smart dongle, there is a second HDMI input along with a USB port which provides power to the dongle.

BenQ-W300G-remote-1

The BenQ X300G remote is similar to other BenQ models' traditional candy bar remotes. It is well laid out and backlit, so it is easy to use in the dark. The top section has power controls. It also features shortcut buttons for Autofocus and a shortcut button for the 3D Keystone feature. The next row has the Source, Mic, and Projector Menu buttons.

The remote control has the typical D-pad with an "OK" button, a Back button, a Settings Menu button, Volume Up/Down buttons, and a Mute button. In addition, the X300G remote control also has a dedicated shortcut button for Game Settings, Picture Modes, and Sound Modes.

Many projectors bundled with a smart dongles require two remote controls to access all the projector and dongle settings. The BenQ remote works seamlessly with the projector and the QS02 smart dongle, so I can easily access every menu, feature, and setting.

BenQ-W300G-Lens-1 - Projector Reviews Images

The X300G features a high-quality motorized 1.2x zoom lens with a throw ratio range of 0.69 to 0.83. Since the lens has a shorter throw range, the X300G can project a large image from a relatively short distance, making it suitable for small to medium-sized rooms. For example, the X300G can project a 100-inch image from approximately 10 feet away.

In addition to motorized autofocus, the X300G includes auto 3D Keystone correction and Corner Fit, which help ensure a perfectly aligned image even if it is not positioned directly in front of the screen.

The X300G uses BenQ’s proven, easy-to-use and understand menus. Navigating through the menus is simple and straightforward, so you can quickly adjust settings and explore different options. Like other BenQ projectors in its class, this unit works on three different menu interfaces. The first is the BenQ basic menu, which allows users to control the most common projector features.

The second is the advanced menu, which allows full access to every projector feature and adjustment.

The third menu is for the Android TV 11 operating system used in the BenQ QS-02 smart media dongle. This is where you would access all the Android apps and streaming services.

The menus offer quick access to important functions, so you can easily switch inputs or change the picture mode. With BenQ projectors, the menus are designed to be user-friendly and make getting the best performance from your projector a breeze.

The X300G out of the box color reproduction was very good

The X300G includes five SDR preset picture modes: BRIGHT, RPG, FPS, SPG, and CINEMA. While the X300G does not have a large number of preset picture modes, I was quite pleased with the unit's out-of-the-box picture quality. When viewing movie and video content, the most accurate mode is CINEMA.

The overall look of the FPS mode was similar to CINEMA, except the FPS mode has the Detail Adjustment set to Low, which elevates the black level, making objects and darker parts of the screen easier to see, which is beneficial when gaming.

Colors in the SPG mode were more vibrant than those in the MOVIE mode, which many viewers would find pleasing. In addition to gaming, this mode is also good for viewing video content under ambient light. While the BRIGHT mode delivered the highest light output, the picture has a noticeably green tint.

Even though the X300G is targeted at gamers, BenQ went out of its way to ensure that the projector produced colors that make movies and videos look lifelike. This excellent color reproduction is also beneficial when playing video games because they look more like the real world.

The projector's tone mapping did an excellent job of maintaining on-screen brightness while showing  highlight detail

The projector can identify and display HDR10 and HLG content, including HDR-encoded games.  In addition to the five SDR picture modes, the X300G includes four HDR picture remotes. Three modes are optimized for gaming since the projector is designed for gaming: HDR 10, HDR RPG, HDR FPS, and HDR SPG.

BenQ’s HDR-PRO technology does a good job tone mapping HDR material so the X300G offers decent on-screen brightness and excellent shadow details. BenQ HDR-PRO optimizes the 3LED light source power and adjusts the projectors brightness to show finer shadow and dark area details.

The unit includes color management, so you can adjust the CMS. Most people buying a projector at this price will not pay several hundred dollars to have the unit professionally calibrated. The CINEMA and HDR10 modes are more than accurate enough for most gamers and home entertainment users.

The X300G has a rated brightness of 2000 ANSI lumens. To measure the projected brightness, I placed the picture mode into bright and ensured that the light source was set to its brightest mode, which is normal. I took several measurements at various locations on the screen to get a good indication of the brightness.

The projector's brightness measured 1945 lumens, close to the manufacturer's estimate. However, this is in BRIGHT mode, which produces a greenish-looking picture. When set to a better-looking picture mode like CINEMA or FPS, the measured brightness was around 1200-1300 lumens.

While the X300G isn’t very bright, due to its 3LED images it still looked vibrant and colorful on my 100-inch Matte white screen even when viewed under low ambient light. LED projectors tend to appear brighter than conventional projectors with the same ANSI rating due to their color saturation.

BLACK LEVEL AND SHADOW DETAIL

  • BenQ-X300G-PQ-31
  • BenQ-X300G-PQ-15
  • BenQ-X300G-PQ-19
  • BenQ-X300G-PQ-25

The X300G's black levels are what you would expect from a compact DLP projector. The shadow detail was good, but the blacks were closer to dark gray. The blacks are fine since most users are probably utilizing the X300G in a room with a little ambient light, which minimizes the benefits of super-deep blacks anyway.

When playing games, the ability to see objects hiding in the dark shadows is important to your survival. On many DLP projectors, blacks look washed out, so dark objects in the shadows seem to blend into the background. The X300G did a good job elevating those fine dark details visible when you were playing a role-playing game or watching a dark movie like Harry Potter.

Leaving the DARK AREA detail settings to OFF will deliver the best overall black levels, but this will make it harder to see details in the dark areas of the screen when gaming. Since this projector's primary focus is gaming, and seeing details in darker areas of the picture is more critical than inky blacks,  we understand why BenQ intentionally tuned the X300G the way they did.

SOUND QUALITY

BenQ X500i Sound - Projector Reviews - Image

The X300G is compact, but its 8-watt x 2-speaker system delivers impressive sound quality. While the side-firing speakers are small, a passive radiator helps enhance low-frequency bass. Due to the unit's passive bass radiator, the bass is good for a compact projector.

BenQ’s Cinematic Sound is integrated into the X300G. This audio enhancement technology delivers high-quality sound that complements the projector's large immersive image.

The sound system was engineered to produce clear, balanced sound that can fill a room without external audio equipment. The audio system plays loud enough to fill a medium-sized room. This is particularly beneficial for users who want a hassle-free setup or who may not have space for a dedicated sound system.

The treVolo-designed sound system produces a smooth frequency response, which results in clear, clean-sounding dialogue. Bongiovi DSP processing enhances scene depth and spatial perception by delivering pinpoint sound placement. The side-firing drivers delivered a wide soundstage.

BenQ-W300G-bass-radiator
The side-firing speakers assisted by the down-firing passive bass radiator, deliver good sound quality

The X300G has several custom-tuned audio modes. These modes are optimized for different types of content, ensuring that the audio output is tailored to provide the best possible experience for each type of media. For instance, there might be distinct modes for movies, gaming, sports, and music, each adjusting the sound parameters to highlight the relevant audio elements.

The Cinema sound mode emphasizes dialogue clarity and cinematic effects for movie watching, enhancing the overall storytelling experience. When switched to one of the gaming modes, the focus might shift to provide precise audio cues that can give players a competitive edge by making it easier to locate in-game sounds like footsteps or directional noises.

The X300G supports HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel), allowing it to output audio to an ARC-compatible speaker/soundbar connected via an HDMI cable. The projector can also transmit audio to an external sound system or headphones via Bluetooth. Lastly, the X300G also includes an audio-only mode so that the projector can be used as a Bluetooth speaker.

The X300G has many gaming-focused features found on BenQ's other X-Series gaming projectors. There are six dedicated gaming modes: three SDR and three optimized for role-playing, sports, or first-person shooter games. For example, the FPS and HDR FPS picture modes elevate the black floor, making it easier to see objects or opponents hiding in the shadows.

The projector can play low input lag gaming in each of these modes. BenQ has been at the forefront of offering low input lag gaming from 4K/60 Hz down to 1080/ 240 Hz. The X300G’s in lag is an ultra-fast 4 ms when playing 1080/240Hhz, 8 ms in 1080p@120Hz and 2K@120Hz, and 16.7 ms in 4K@60Hz.

To ensure the best gaming experience and the lowest possible input lag, the Auto Game Mode automatically switches the X300G to a suitable Picture Mode/Sound Mode when a gaming console is connected and detected.

The BenQ X300G, like all BenQ X-Series Gaming Projectors, is compatible with SettingXchange, which lets users download expert projector image settings for the most popular games. Using a simple software tool, you can quickly download game-specific settings created by professional gamers and experience gameplay like a pro using ready-made celebrity profiles. The SettingXchange platform lets you share your projector image settings with fellow gamers to help them improve their gaming experience.

While I am more of a movie enthusiast than a hardcore gamer, I did take the time to play a couple of roleplaying and first-person shooter games using my Xbox Series S. The projector was more than fast enough to fit my needs.

COMPETITION

ViewSonic X2-4K Gaming Projector  $1,599 MSRP

The ViewSonic X2-4K is a fantastic gaming projector.  The BenQ X300G and X2-4K deliver simlar brightness of 2,000 ANSI lumens but the X300G out of the box color reproduction is better. The X2-4k can be an excellent home theater projector as long as it's calibrated. However, if you want an amazing out-of-the-box home theater experience, the X2-4K may not be your projector.

Like the BenQ X300G, this ViewSonic is designed for a gaming enthusiast. The X2-4K is the world's first projector designed for Xbox consoles. After a highly rigorous testing process, the X2-4K was designated by Microsoft as the world's first "Designed for Xbox" projector.

The X2-4K is a high-quality projector providing a genuinely immersive gaming experience using multiple technologies, including support for 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160p) gaming at a 60 Hz refresh rate and a native 1440p DLP imager. These give Xbox users an optimal 4K (1440p) gaming experience with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz per feature. The BenQ does not display 1440 120 Hz, but both projectors will display 4K 60 hz, then 1080p at 60, 120, and 240 Hz. PC gamers can also use the X2-4K's 1080p 240 Hz gaming support for hyper-smooth and realistic gameplay. Movies and games can be projected anywhere from 60 to 120 inches at a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Both projectors offer dedicated on-board sound systems with well above average sound and simulated surround capabilities. The ViewSonic does not include the Google ecosystem, while the BenQ comes with a QS-02 smart media stick featuring Google's Android TV 11 operating system.

NOMVDIC P1000 $1,599 MSRP

The NOMVDIC P1000 is a compelling option in the growing category of dedicated gaming projectors. At 2,300 ANSI lumens, the P1000 is slightly brighter than the BenQ X300G, and the picture is just as good with great color depth because of its RGB LED light source. It is an excellent solution for gamers who demand immersive visuals and lightning-fast responsiveness. Replacing traditional lamps with a very bright LED light source means this projector provides users with vibrant colors up to 125% of the Rec.709 color gamut and an extended lifespan of 30,000 hours. Both projectors sell for a similar price, so it comes down to what you want the most from your gaming projector.

The NOMVDIC P1000 features a large 0.65-inch DMD, which delivers crisp 4K UHD resolution displaying the most intricate details in movies and 4K games. NOMVDIC's decision to use a 0.65-inch DMD offers multiple benefits depending on the content and preset mode the projector is set to. SDR content displays a noticeable improvement in overall black levels, allowing the P1000 to display some of the best blacks I've seen in its class and price point. This is a key advantage that the NOMVDIC has over the ViewSonic. Black levels can be critical for many of us, so that the P1000 could be the projector for you.

The P1000 and the X300G deliver super-low-latency gaming, with speeds as low as 4.2 ms at 1080p 240 Hz. Both projectors fully support HDR formats, including HDR10 and HLG.

The P1000, with its Harmon Kardon Dolby and DTS sound system, beats X400i’s volume level hands down, but both projectors create an immersive sound experience. Based on initial impressions, the P1000 performs on par with many mainstream RGB LED projectors we've reviewed.
