The LG CineBeam S (PU615U), which retails for $1299, is the newest addition to LG’s expanding lineup of compact laser projectors, offering a portable, ultra-short-throw design that combines 4K UHD resolution with the company’s webOS smart platform.
The CineBeam S (PU615U) is equipped with a single DLP (0.47” DMD) chip to reproduce 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) onscreen resolution. The projector’s 3-channel laser light source can deliver up to 500 lumens of brightness while reproducing 154% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. Due to its wide color reproduction, dynamic contrast ratio of 450,000:1, and effective Dynamic HDR Tone mapping, it results in excellent HDR picture quality from a compact portable package.
The PU615U utilizes the same webOS operating system found in LG’s highly regarded smart TVs, making it easy to access popular streaming services, apps, and games. The projector is also equipped with a built-in stereo speaker system that supports virtual Dolby Atmos.
Feature and performance-wise, the PU615U is similar to the award-winning LG CineBeam Q (HU710PB) except it is equipped with an ultra-short-throw lens. The PU615U can project a large image even when positioned very close to the projection surface. The projector produces a 40-inch diagonal picture from just 3.2 inches away, and from 15.5 inches, it can deliver a 100-inch picture.
The CineBeam S design eliminates the need for a long throw, which is particularly beneficial for users in apartments, dormitories, or multipurpose living spaces. The CineBeam S is targeted at customers seeking a large-screen experience without the complexity of traditional projector installation.
To simplify setup, the CineBeam S (PU651u) features several auto-adjustment features designed to make the projector as user-friendly as possible, particularly for casual owners who may not have prior experience with projectors.
The compact unit can be placed on a shelf, table, or other flat surfaces, making it accessible in spaces where larger projectors would be impractical. The projector’s size and weight make it easy to move the CineBeam S from one room to another, further expanding its utility.
LG demonstrated an early version of the model this year at CES 2025. With its minimalist cube design, laser light source, and integrated stereo speakers featuring Dolby Atmos support, the CineBeam S is intended to deliver a convenient, high-resolution viewing solution for apartments, dormitories, and other multipurpose living spaces.

The CineBeam S represents LG’s ongoing effort to merge advanced projection technology with modern living trends that prioritize flexibility and design. While many 4K projectors still require several feet of throw distance and dedicated mounting, the CineBeam S eliminates those constraints with its ultra-short-throw optical system.
The projector can display a 40-inch image when placed just 3.2 inches from the wall, and a 100-inch picture from only 15.5 inches away. This capability allows the projector to be positioned directly in front of the viewing surface, freeing users from complex ceiling installations or the need for long cable runs.
Like LG’s smaller CineBeam Q (HU710PB), the CineBeam S employs a 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160) imaging system that uses XPR pixel-shifting technology to achieve over 8 million addressable pixels on-screen. It utilizes an RGB laser light source that provides rich color reproduction and wide coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut—up to 154 percent—making it suitable for viewing HDR content with vivid color accuracy.
The projector is rated at 500 ANSI lumens of brightness, which is comparable to other compact projectors in its class and sufficient for dark or moderately lit environments. A dynamic contrast ratio of 450,000:1 enables it to display deep blacks and maintain separation between bright and dark image areas.
Visually, the CineBeam S continues LG’s minimalist design approach. It’s compact 4.3-by-6.3-by-6.3-inch housing weighs just over four pounds and features a metallic finish that integrates cleanly into a variety of room settings. The projector’s aesthetic focus reflects LG’s intent to treat it not only as a piece of technology but also as an unobtrusive design element. The small footprint and cube-like form factor make it easy to place the projector on a shelf, coffee table, or media stand, and just as easy to move it from one location to another.
Feature and performance-wise, the new CineBeam S is be nearly identical to the award-winning CineBeam Q. The notable difference is the CineBeam S has an ultra-short-throw lens system, so the unit can project a large image even when positioned very close to the projection surface. The projector produces a 40-inch diagonal picture from just 3.2 inches away, and from 15.5 inches, it can deliver a 100-inch picture.

Built-in webOS software gives the PU615U the same smart functionality as LG’s lineup of smart televisions. The platform supports direct access to popular streaming apps such as Netflix, Disney+, YouTube, and Prime Video without the need for an external player. Wireless streaming is also supported through AirPlay 2 for Apple devices and Screen Share for Android and PC sources.
The projector includes a compact remote control, but it can also be operated through the LG ThinQ mobile app, allowing users to adjust settings and launch content directly from a smartphone.
The CineBeam S (PU615U) is a compact and stylish projector that delivers 4K resolution, smart functionality, and a big-screen experience without the complexity of traditional systems. The CineBeam S is a compelling option in the growing segment of lifestyle-oriented display solutions, and it serves as an example of how ultra-short-throw projection can be adapted to fit everyday lifestyles.
The CineBeam S (PU615U) measures approximately 4.3 inches wide x 6.3" deep x 6.3" high and weighs just 4.2 pounds. The projector’s lightweight and compact design contributes to its flexibility. At 4.1 pounds, it can be easily carried between rooms or transported between homes.
It includes a standard ¼-20 tripod mount and supports use on tripods with a minimum 3-kilogram load capacity. This allows users to position the projector at custom angles or heights without permanent installation.
Like the CineBeam Q (HU710PB), which I reviewed last year, I was incredibly impressed with the fit and finish of PU615U. With a retail price of $1299, it is one of the more expensive compact lifestyle projectors, but it is beautifully designed and has an incredibly solid feel, justifying its price.
While most users will primarily utilize the projector's massive array of built-in streaming services, the PU615U does have a few inputs. There is a single HDMI input that supports Audio Return Channel (ARC). There are also a couple of USB-C ports that provide support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode and Power Delivery. One of the USB-C ports should be used to power the projector with the included 65-watt PD adapter.
Since the PU615U supports USB power delivery, you can power the projector with a USB battery bank that can deliver at least 20V/5A (100 W). This feature lets you use the projector virtually anywhere, even though it doesn’t have a built-in battery. You can use the second USB-C connection to play content (video, music, or photos) stored on a USB stick or hard drive. Wireless options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and compatibility with LG’s ThinQ smart ecosystem for voice control and app-based operation.
The unit’s remote control has all the buttons you would expect on a projector remote control. Some of the projector's buttons include Power On/Off, Settings, Volume, Mute, D-pad with an "OK" button, Back, Homepage, and Input Source. There are dedicated buttons to switch picture modes, access installation features, and quickly access popular video streaming services.
The PU615U’s ultra-short-throw optical engine defines its physical layout and performance. The lens assembly is positioned at the top front of the chassis, directing light upward at a steep angle to create a large projected image on a nearby wall or screen. The projector can display image sizes ranging from 40 to 100 inches with projection distances between 3.1 and 15.4 inches. The upward projection ratio of approximately 122 percent means the image appears higher than the projector’s lens, allowing for convenient table placement directly below the viewing area.
Automatic setup features simplify installation and adjustment. Auto Screen Adjustment analyzes the projected image to correct geometry, focus, and alignment without manual input. Users can fine-tune the results using options for keystone correction, screen scaling, and shifting. Wall Color Adjustment compensates for surfaces that are not pure white, maintaining accurate color balance in nontraditional projection environments.
The PU615U uses LG’s webOS platform, which contributes significantly to its ease of use. Since the menu is based on the system utilized in millions of LG TVs, it is well-organized and easy to navigate. It is easy to navigate between streaming apps and input sources.
There are two different menus: one for making picture adjustments and the other for accessing content, apps, and services. The quick-setting button looks like a gear and takes you directly to the basic settings menu. Pressing and holding this button will take you directly to the projector's advanced picture settings.
The Home button, which looks like a house, will allow you to access apps and other entertaining services. Once in the projector app menu, you can select a specific input, a streaming app, a web browser, a media player, or explore LG's Content Store. Since the PU615U can access the LG Content Store, there are hundreds of entertainment and gaming options available. The inclusion of AirPlay 2, Screen Share, and Bluetooth further enhances versatility by allowing users to mirror content or connect wireless peripherals.
Lastly, the projector also has a built-in media player that supports many different types of media (Videos, MP3s, Photos, etc.). You can play back files stored on a USB or your local network. The PU615U is packed with smart features and adjustments, making its menu system quite complex. I noticed that the menu was a little sluggish switching from sub menu to sub menu, which probably has to do with the size of the projector’s processor. However, once you were in the sub menu, all of the settings worked as advertised.
The PU615U includes several SDR picture modes, including STANDARD, CINEMA, SPORTS, GAME, FILMMAKER MODE, and a couple of Expert settings. Each picture preset adjusts color temperature and gamma for different types of content. The FILMMAKER MODE, CINEMA, and EXPERT BRIGHT and EXPERT (DARK) delivered best picture mode out of the box.
I found that the FILMMAKER MODE and EXPERT (DARK SPACE NIGHT) modes looked identical and utilize a gamma of 2.4 for dark room viewing. The CINEMA and EXPERT (BRIGHT SPACE DAY) modes have an average gamma of 2.2, making them a better option for viewing content under low ambient light. In brighter environments, I recommend STANDARD because it settings are designed to make colors look vibrant under higher ambient light.
The CineBeam S (PU615U) also has several dedicated HDR preset picture modes. The color reproduction is one of the PU615U's strongest attributes. The projector’s ability to reproduce more than the full DCI-P3 color gamut allows it to display saturated reds, greens, and blues. This results in images that retain depth and natural tonality, particularly in HDR content where color gradients are more demanding.
The projector's SDR and HDR color reproduction were noticeably better than most portable projectors. While most people would be happy with the unit's out-of-the-box image quality, you can easily improve the picture quality of the PU615U by making simple adjustments to your projector's BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and SHARPNESS settings without utilizing the projector's more advanced color adjustments.

The PU615U has a rated brightness of 500 ANSI lumens, which places it in the same range as LG’s CineBeam Q (HU710PB). To measure the projector’s light output, I set the projector to BRIGHTEST Mode, and I then took 3-4 readings about 15-20% out from the center of the screen.
LG PU615U Brightness (Brightest Mode, Maximum Light Level): 554 lumens
Measuring the brightness of an ultra-short-throw projector using a light meter is always challenging due to the steep projection angle, but the PU615U appears to beat LG's brightness claim. Below is a chart showing the brightness of several SDR picture modes.
Picture Modes: Brightness | ||
---|---|---|
Picture Mode | Brightness Measured (Lumens) | |
VIVID | 540 | |
STANDARD | 443 | |
BASIC | 445 | |
CINEMA | 387 | |
SPORT | 439 | |
GAME | 398 | |
WALL COLOR | 413 | |
FILMMAKER MODE | 385 | |
BRIGHTNESS | 553 | |
EXPERT (BRIGHT) | 444 | |
EXPERT (DARK) | 390 |
As mentioned, BRIGHTEST and VIVID modes are the least accurate and should only be used as a last resort to overcome a significant amount of ambient light. The EXPERT (BRIGHT ROOM) mode delivered the best balance of brightness and color accuracy. The FILMMAKER MODE and EXPERT (DARK ROOM) modes were the most accurate picture modes out of the box. These modes are noticeably dimmer, but they still produce enough brightness to deliver a good-looking SDR or HDR image in a dark room.
While the projector's more accurate picture modes did reduce the projector’s light output, there was still more than enough brightness for viewing SDR content on a 100" screen in a dark room. Due to its limited brightness, I felt the HDR content looked best on a screen smaller than 85”.
Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to review several high-quality portable projectors. While the CineBeam S delivers impressive brightness for its compact size, there are portable projectors in the same price range that can deliver double the light output. However, the Projector does a good job maximizing the impact of its brightness.
While black looked closer to dark grey, I was impressed with the PU615U black level. It is likely that the PU615U will be utilized in family rooms or spaces with some ambient light, where it would be difficult to appreciate ultra-deep black levels anyway. While the projector still cannot match the black level and native contrast of a dedicated Home Theater projector, its performance is better than most DLP-based portable projectors I have reviewed.
To improve dynamic contrast, the LG PU615U includes a dynamic laser dimming feature called Auto Dynamic Contrast. Due to its 450,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, dark scenes remain highly detailed, offering both good blacks and visible shadow detail.
The CineBeam S (PU615U) produced a clear and detailed 4K image. Fine textures, on-screen text, and small details remain sharp, even at the maximum 100-inch projection size. Due to its RGB laser light source, the PU615U can reproduce a huge range of colors, which is great for viewing HDR, but it is overkill when watching SDR. The projector did an excellent job mapping the massive color gamut to reproduce the color found in SDR content accurately.
The projector will automatically switch to FILMMAKER MODE when the flag in compatible SDR or HDR content is detected. While this mode looked good when viewing SDR and HDR, I thought that the colors appeared a little undersaturated. When viewing SDR content, my preferred picture mode was EXPERT (BRIGHT SPACE DAYTIME). My preferred HDR viewing mode was CINEMA HOME with the Color Adjustment found under the Color Fine-tune submenu set to Low.
The projector supports HDR10 and Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) content. HDR playback benefits from LG’s dynamic tone mapping, which adjusts brightness and contrast levels on the fly to best utilize the projector’s brightness range based on the content being displayed. When the projector’s HDR tone mapping feature is engaged, more highlight detail is visible, but you will sacrifice a little onscreen brightness. Overall, I still preferred viewing HDR with this setting switched ON. The images below show the difference when Dynamic Tone Mapping is switched ON and OFF.
The PU615U’s gaming performance is quite good for a portable projector because it offers the low input response needed for casual play. The projector’s HDMI input supports ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), allowing it to detect when connected to a gaming source and automatically switch to game mode. Latency performance is comparable to the CineBeam Q, measuring approximately 50 to 60 milliseconds in Game Mode.
The PU615U includes the Game Optimizer feature found on many LG TVs and projectors, designed to enhance the gaming experience by providing a dedicated interface for optimizing display settings. This feature simplifies the process of adjusting key gaming settings, such as refresh rate, response time, and input lag, making it easier for users to tailor their experience based on the type of game they are playing.
The Game Optimizer also allows users to adjust settings based on the game genre or how they want their games to look and feel. For example, you can prioritize lower input lag and faster response times for shooting games, where reaction time is crucial, or enhance contrast and detail for adventure games that benefit from more immersive visuals.
The projector's USB-C port supports DisplayPort output from a Nintendo® Switch, mobile device, or laptop. Since the USB-C input also supports power delivery, the PU615U can charge the Nintendo Switch while projecting gaming content. This is nice because you don’t need to carry the Switch’s docking station or AC power supply. So while PU615U is not designed for competitive gaming, it performs it is a good option for console or casual PC gaming sessions.
The PU615U features dual integrated stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos virtualization. The unit’s audio performance is stronger than might be expected from a projector of this size. The projector includes several preset sound modes. I did most of my listening in the STANDARD audio mode.
The dual speakers produce a wide stereo field with clearly articulated dialogue and midrange frequencies. Dolby Atmos virtualization enhances spatial cues, giving the impression of height and width that extends beyond the physical dimensions of the projector. At higher volumes, the sound remains composed with minimal distortion, although bass output is limited.
While its compact size limits low-frequency extension, the built-in sound is clear and balanced for general use. Users seeking enhanced performance can connect an external sound system via HDMI Audio Return channel (ARC) or Bluetooth.
The projector’s internal cooling system operates quietly, maintaining a low noise profile during normal operation. We do not measure audible noise, but LG lists the PU615U’s fan noise as 28dB. When the projector was set to Normal and ECO Light level, I could barely hear the unit's fan from my sitting position during quiet scenes.
The LG CineBeam S (PU615U) brings together portability, design, and performance in a single compact unit that reflects LG’s evolving vision for lifestyle-oriented projection. It delivers true 4K resolution, wide color gamut coverage, and convenient smart features in a device that can easily move between rooms or homes. The ultra-short-throw lens allows large-screen viewing without extensive space or installation requirements, while automatic setup features make it approachable for first-time projector users.
Although its 500-lumen brightness limits use in bright rooms, the CineBeam S performs impressively in controlled lighting, offering vivid color and strong contrast for its size. The integrated stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support extend its versatility by enabling enjoyable viewing without external audio equipment. Combined with webOS, AirPlay 2, and USB-C power options, the projector functions as a self-contained entertainment platform.
Automatic features such as Auto Screen Adjustment and Auto Focus perform reliably in most environments. When projecting onto flat walls or screens, the image automatically aligns within seconds. Minor manual adjustments may still be necessary in cases where the wall surface is textured or nonuniform, but overall setup remains quick and user-friendly.
The CineBeam S is best suited for customers who value convenience and design as much as image quality. It can transform compact living rooms, dormitories, or even temporary spaces into functional home theaters without complicated installation or calibration. The promotional bundle with the LG S40TR soundbar further enhances its value, providing an easy path to richer sound.
Based on my experience with the LG CineBeam Q (HU710PB), I had high expectations for this model. The HU710PB was one of the best-performing feature-rich portable projectors that we have ever reviewed. The new CineBeam S (PU615U) delivered the same outstanding picture quality as the HU710PB but with the added install flexibility provided by an ultra-short, throw lens.
By adapting ultra-short-throw projection to a portable form factor, LG has created a product that bridges the gap between traditional home theater and lifestyle entertainment. The CineBeam S (PU615U) stands out as a capable and thoughtfully designed projector that prioritizes simplicity, style, and flexibility while still delivering the 4K viewing experience expected from the CineBeam line.
Compact LG CineBeam models, like the PU615U, command a price premium over other portable projectors. However, their excellent picture quality, outstanding build quality, and extensive feature set more than justifies the price.
