The LG HU710PB, also known as the CineBeam Q, is a 4K portable smart projector that retails for $999. It offers an impressive blend of advanced technology, user-friendly features, and class-leading picture quality.
The HU710PB utilizes a single DLP (0.47” DMD) chip to reproduce 4K UHD resolution (3,840 x 2,160), which ensures crisp and vivid images. It employs a 3-channel RGB laser light source, offering a wide color gamut coverage of 154% DCI-P3, and it is rated to last up to 20,000 hours.
Combining wide color reproduction with a dynamic contrast ratio of 450,000:1 and effective Dynamic HDR Tonemapping results in class-leading HDR picture quality.
Weighing just 3 pounds and featuring a 360-degree rotating handle, the CineBeam Q is designed for easy transport. The handle also doubles as a stand, which can be adjusted to project images at different angles, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
With a retail price of $999, the LG HU710PB is pricey for a portable projector but it offers outstanding build quality, great picture quality, and a wealth of advanced features for its price. It uses an XPR-equipped DLP chip to deliver a sharp 4K image on screens ranging from 50 to 120 inches.
The HU710PB is one of the most compact RGB laser projectors I have reviewed. Its advanced light source can reproduce over 154% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is nearly 100% of BT.2020.
The HU710PB supports both HDR10 and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG). The projector utilizes a powerful video processor capable of Dynamic Tone Mapping HDR10 content. This feature automatically adjusts both the dark and bright levels to ensure the best picture and optimize the HDR performance.
The HU710PB runs on LG’s WebOS platform, which is similar to the system found on their latest flat-panel TVs. It offers a user-friendly interface and access to popular streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. This feature transforms the projector into a smart entertainment hub, allowing users to stream their favorite content without needing additional devices.
In addition to HDMI input, the HU710PB includes a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort output and power delivery. You can use the USB-C input to connect the HU710PB to a compatible USB battery bank to power the unit if you want to watch a movie when AC power isn’t available.
The USB-C port can connect the projector to a mobile device, laptop, or even a Nintendo® Switch. The projector can charge the Nintendo Switch while projecting gaming content, which is nice because you don’t need to carry the Switch’s docking station or AC power supply with you. When paired with a portable gaming console like a Nintendo, the HU710PB can provide an amazing gaming experience nearly anywhere.
To simplify setup, the HU710PB includes features that automatically align and focus the image when placed on a surface, eliminating the need for manual adjustments. Auto Screen Adjustment and Auto Focus are particularly beneficial for quick setup in various environments
The HU710PB can also automatically adjust the picture settings based on the surrounding lighting conditions, ensuring optimal image quality at all times. So whether you're watching a movie in a dimly lit room or giving a presentation in a bright office, the projector adapts to provide the best possible picture.
The projector includes a mono 3-watt speaker, which delivers decent sound. The HU710PB can be connected to a soundbar or wireless headphones via Bluetooth for those who desire better sound.
The HU710PB is part of the LG CineBeam lineup of projectors, which are designed to make front projection more accessible and appealing to a broader range of consumers. Since the HU710PB can produce a massive picture from a compact chassis, it is a great solution for an apartment, dorm room, or other small space.
Since the HU710PB is designed to serve as a portable TV replacement, it includes most of the features that consumers expect in a flat-panel TV, including internal speakers and smart features.
The LG HU710PB combines all the Smart capabilities of flat-panel TVs with a high-quality RGB Laser-light engine and 4K resolution to make it a true flat-panel TV replacement that you can easily move from room to room.
The HU710PB is a compact RGB laser-equipped 4K projector measuring approximately 3.1 inches wide x 5.3" deep x 5.3" high and weighing approximately 3.3 pounds. When I first took the unit out of the box, I was incredibly impressed with its fit and finish, which is best in class. This compact lifestyle projector is beautifully designed and has an incredibly solid feel.
The lens, a sensor for the auto-setup features, and the exhaust vent are on the front of the chassis. The handle, which can be used to carry the projector or angle it towards the screen, is mounted to the side of the unit. On the rear, you will find a speaker, power button, inputs, IR sensor, and intake vent. There is no control panel on the HU710PB's chassis, but there is a button on the back of the units to power the projector ON/OFF.
The HU710PB doesn’t have many inputs, but this is fine for most users because they primarily utilize the projector's massive array of built-in streaming services. The projector does include an HDMI and a USB-C connection, which is helpful if you want to connect to an external source such as a game system.
The HU710PB has an integrated audio system, but you can attach it to a soundbar or an AV Receiver via HDMI ARC.
You can use USB-C to play content (video, music, or photos) stored on a USB stick or hard drive. The USB-C port also supports DisplayPort and power input/output. It can be used to connect the projector to a mobile device, laptop, or even a portablegaming system like a Nintendo® Switch.
It can even charge a connected mobile device while projecting content from it. This is also nice because you don’t need to carry your mobile device docking station or AC power supply. Using a USB-IF-certified cable, the HU710PB is able to supply power to a connected USB-IF-certified device. Supported USB-C power delivery output:
Lastly, you can also use the USB-C port to connect the projector to a compatible USB battery bank to power the unit if you want to watch a movie on the go.
The remote control has all the buttons you would expect on a projector remote control. Some of the projector's buttons include Power On/Off, Settings, Volume, Mute, D-pad with an "OK" button, Back, Homepage, and Input Source. There are dedicated buttons to switch picture modes, access installation features, and quickly access video streaming services.
In addition to the remote control, there are other ways to control the projector. You can use the projector's USB-C port to connect a keyboard to input text, a mouse to navigate the smart menu, or a game controller to play app-based games.
The LG HU710PB has a fixed 1.2:1 throw ratio lens with power focus. The HU710PB does not offer any lens shift, but to simplify setup, it includes auto horizontal/vertical keystone correction and autofocus. The projector also includes a 4-point corner adjustment. The lens is designed to deliver a sharp image on screen sizes ranging from 50” to 120”. Below is a graph showing the throw distance for several screen sizes.
Throw Distance By 16:9 Screen Size | |
---|---|
50 inches | 52.2" (1238 mm) |
60 inches | 62.7" (1594 mm) |
70 inches | 73.2" (1860 mm) |
80 inches | 83.6" (2125 mm) |
90 inches | 94.1" (2391 mm) |
100 inches | 104.6" (2567 mm) |
110 inches | 115" (2922 mm) |
120 inches | 125.5" (3188 mm) |
The HU710PB is packed with smart features and adjustments, so its menu system is pretty complex. However, since the menu is based on the system utilized in millions of LG TVs, it is well-organized and easy to navigate. There are two different menus: one for making picture adjustments and the other for accessing content, apps, and services.
The quick setting button looks like a gear and takes you directly to the basic settings menu. Pressing and holding this button will take you directly to the projector's advanced picture settings.
The Home button, which looks like a house, will allow you to access apps and other entertaining services. Once in the projector app menu, you can select a specific input, a streaming app, a web browser, a media player, or explore LG's Content Store. Since the HU710PB can access the LG Content Store, there are hundreds of entertainment and gaming options available.
The projector also has a built-in media player supports many different types of media (Videos, MP3, Photos, etc.). You can playback files stored on an USB and the HU710PB also supports wireless networking so you can access content from your local network. Lastly, you can also cast content to the projector from an Android device via Screen Share or an iOS device using Airplay.
The HU710PB's color reproduction was better than any compact portable projector that I have reviewed. When it comes to color reproduction and picture quality, the HU710PB is best of class. The LG HU710PB includes nine preset SDR picture modes and seven HDR picture modes.
When viewing SDR material, the most accurate picture modes were CINEMA, EXPERT (DARK ROOM), and FILMMAKER. When viewing content under ambient light, my favorite picture modes are EXPERT DAYTIME and STANDARD because the colors are a little more vibrant.
The BRIGHTEST mode and VIVID modes delivered the brightest image, but the colors were noticeably cooler and oversaturated. However, these traits are helpful if you are trying to overcome higher ambient light.
Seven picture modes are also available for HDR content. The CINEMA and FILMMAKER modes deliver the most accurate color reproduction.
The HU710PB utilizes a compact RGB laser light source that delivers 154% of the DCP three-color gamut. Many projectors with this type of laser light source tend to oversaturate bright colors when viewing SDR content. Since the projector’s powerful video processor is similar to the ones utilized in LG televisions, the HU710PB did an excellent job mapping the projector’s massive color capabilities to track SDR material properly
The HU710PB includes advanced color adjustments found on LG's larger home entertainment projectors, such as White Balance, Gamma, and CMS (Color management system). These types of picture settings are too advanced for the average user; you can make quick BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and SHARPNESS adjustments to improve the picture quality of the HU710PB in your room.
Several free test patterns are available on the Murideo website and their YouTube channel. Murideo also has written instructions in the resource section of its website. Also, check out our YouTube video on utilizing several test patterns called Optimize The Image of a Projector or TV Using Free Murideo Test Patterns
The LG HU710PB has a rated brightness of 500 lumens. To get an approximate measurement of the projector's brightness, I set its light source mode to BRIGHTNESS and its picture mode to BRIGHT. I then took 3-4 readings about 15-20% out from the center of the lens.
The HU710PB measured 517 lumens, more than LG's published ANSI lumens specification. Due to the unit's RGB laser light source's ability to produce highly saturated colors, the on-screen image seemed brighter than its measurement. At 500 lumens, the HU710PB isn't the brightest portable projector you can buy at this price point, but it is bright enough to deliver a vibrant-looking image on an 80” screen even in a room with low ambient light.
While the HU710PB still cannot match the black level and native contrast of a dedicated Home Theater projector, its performance is better than most DLP-based portable projectors I have reviewed.
To improve dynamic contrast, the LG HU710PB includes dynamic laser dimming, Called Auto Dynamic Contrast. The projector’s dynamic contrast ratio is listed at 450,000:1 and this feature makes bright scenes appear brighter. Dark scenes remain highly detailed, with deep blacks and shade detail still visible.
The HU710PB delivers a sharp 4K image with accurate colors. The projector's video processor also did an excellent job upscaling content whether I was watching 720P sports from ESPN or a 1080p Blu-ray.
Above are images of various videos and photos in 4K and HD resolution. Like all our photos, they remain unadjusted for color, so they do not look as good as what the projector produced. All the HD and 4K images were taken with the HU710PB set to either FILMMAKER or EXPERT (BRIGHT ROOM) mode.
Even the brightest projectors struggle to reproduce HDR content, so delivering a good-looking image from a compact 500-lumen projector is especially challenging. Due to their limited brightness, HDR projectors utilize tone mapping, which often compromises the bright highlight details while delivering full-screen brightness.
The HU710PB has a similar video processor to the one found in LG's 4K HDR TVs. This powerful processor allows the HU710PB to dynamically tone map HDR10 content. The goal is to optimize the HU710PB brightness capabilities based on the content being shown, which significantly improves dynamic range and color.
When the projector HDR tone mapping is engaged, the HU710PB maintains highlight detail, but you will sacrifice some onscreen brightness. Overall, I still preferred viewing HDR with this setting switched ON. The images below show the difference when Dynamic Tone Mapping is switched ON and OFF.
The LG HU710PB gaming performance is quite good for a portable projector. The HU710PB includes the same Game Optimizer feature found on many LG TVs and projectors which is designed to enhance the gaming experience by providing gamers with a dedicated interface that allows them to optimize their display settings for gaming. This feature simplifies the process of adjusting key gaming settings, such as refresh rate, response time, and input lag, making it easier for users to tailor their experience based on the type of game they are playing.
One key aspect of the Game Optimizer is that it allows users to adjust settings based on the game genre. For example, you can prioritize lower input lag and faster response times for shooting games, where reaction time is crucial, or enhance contrast and detail for adventure games that benefit from more immersive visuals.
The interface also allows gamers to customize the projector's black levels, brightness, and contrast on the fly, giving them control over how their games look and feel. Overall, the Game Optimizer is a powerful tool that enhances gaming by providing both automatic optimizations and extensive manual control, ensuring that LG TVs and projectors deliver a top-tier gaming experience.
The LG HU710PB.s HDMI inputs support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), so the projector can also detect when it is connected to a gaming source and automatically switch to its game mode. This reduces input lag to around 20-30 ms when gaming at 1080p60. This should be responsive enough for a casual gamer playing a fast-paced game.
If you're looking for a portable gaming solution, you could pair the LG HU710PB with a Nintendo Switch. The projector's USB-C port supports DisplayPort output from a Nintendo® Switch, mobile device, or laptop. Since the USB-C input also supports power delivery, the HU710PB can charge the Nintendo Switch while projecting gaming content.
his is also nice because you don’t need to carry the Switch’s docking station or AC power supply. This ease of setup means that Switch users can quickly transition from handheld play to enjoying their games on a large screen.
The HU710PB has single 3-watt built-in speaker located on the back of the chassis. The speaker is tiny so the sound is thin and it produces little to no bass. While the sound quality is okay for narration, I recommend connecting the projector to a separate audio system.
You can connect the projector to an external sound system via HDMI ARC or Bluetooth. The projector’s internal speaker and the Bluetooth speaker can output sound simultaneously, or up to two Bluetooth devices of the same model can be connected simultaneously.
We do not measure audible noise, but LG lists the HU710PB's fan noise as 25dB, 27dB, or 29dB, depending on the Energy-Saving mode you are using. When the projector was set to Normal and ECO Light level, I could barely hear the unit's fan from my sitting position during quiet scenes.
The LG HU710PB CineBeam Q combines portability with performance, making it an attractive option for those who need a high-quality viewing experience on the go. This 4K UHD projector is designed with compactness and ease of use in mind, making it ideal for both home entertainment and professional presentations.
One of the most compelling aspects of the LG HU710PB is its portability. Weighing just about 3 pounds and measuring 5.3 inches in length, 5.3 inches in height, and slightly over 3 inches in width, this projector is remarkably easy to carry and set up wherever you need it. The innovative 360-degree rotating handle enhances its portability by serving as a convenient carrying handle and a stand, allowing you to adjust the projection angle effortlessly. This feature makes it possible to project onto walls, ceilings, or any other suitable surface without the need for additional accessories.
Despite its small size, the CineBeam Q does not compromise on performance. It delivers 4K UHD resolution through advanced pixel-shifting technology, producing images that are sharp and detailed. The HU710PB utilizes a 3-channel RGB laser light source, a feature that significantly boosts its color performance. This technology allows the projector to cover up to 154% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. The result is vivid, accurate colors that bring out the best in whatever content you’re watching. Furthermore, the projector’s 450,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio ensures that it can deliver deep blacks and bright whites simultaneously, adding depth and realism to dark scenes.
The HU710PB supports High-Dynamic-Range content mastered in HDR10 and HLG. Due to its powerful video processor, the HU710PB can dynamically tone map HDR10 material, so HDR looks better than most competitive models.
In addition to its visual capabilities, the CineBeam Q is equipped with smart features that make it exceptionally user-friendly. It comes with LG’s webOS platform, which provides a seamless interface for accessing popular streaming services directly from the projector. With built-in access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube, and Apple TV, among others, you can start watching your favorite content right out of the box, without needing to connect any external devices. Moreover, the projector supports both Apple AirPlay 2 and Screen Share, allowing you to mirror content from your iOS, macOS, or Android devices effortlessly. This makes it easy to share photos, videos, and even presentations on the big screen.
When it comes to audio, the LG HU710PB includes a built-in 3W speaker, which is sufficient for small spaces or casual viewing. However, recognizing that some users may require more robust sound, LG has included HDMI ARC and Bluetooth audio output. This feature allows you to connect up to two Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as external speakers, soundbars, or headphones, at the same time, offering a more immersive audio experience without the need for wires. The projector also offers multiple connectivity options, including HDMI and USB-C ports, which support HD and UHD video connections, making it compatible with a wide range of devices.
The design of the CineBeam Q is as impressive as its performance. It features a minimalist, all-metal exterior that not only looks sleek and modern but also adds to the projector’s durability. This premium design ensures that the projector can easily blend into any environment, whether it's a living room, home office, or professional setting. However, it’s worth noting that while the projector is highly portable, it does not have a built-in battery. This means you’ll need to have access to a power outlet wherever you plan to use it, which could be a limitation for some users.
In conclusion, the LG HU710PB is an exceptional portable projector that offers a rare combination of high-quality visuals, smart features, and stylish design in a compact form. It’s an excellent choice for anyone who needs a versatile projector that can deliver a great viewing experience in a variety of settings. While its brightness may be limited compared to larger home theater projectors, and the lack of a built-in battery may be a drawback for some, the CineBeam Q’s overall performance and ease of use make it a strong contender in the portable projector market.
Whether you're setting up a movie night at home, delivering a professional presentation, or just need a projector that you can easily take with you, the LG HU710PB is certainly worth considering.
