Comments by Projector Reviews staff:
Epson just published this press release, touting their market share of projector sales in the US. We'll if I was a projector manufacturer and my numbers looked this good, I'd be shouting from the rooftops as well. Their numbers are based on Pacific Media Associates tracking. Some of you may be familiar with PMA as we do post some of their press releases as well. PMA has been tracking the projector market going back to at least the mid-late 1990s, basically my early dealer days before Projector Reviews. Back in those days my company, Presenting Solutions, like most of the other large dealers in the industry at the time, would report monthly sales, model by model to PMA.
I do get an occasional inquiry from readers asking why we review so many Epson projectors, or why they seem to win more awards than most other brands. I think these numbers from PMA help explain that. Epson operates, and is a major player in every projector market segment except for pico projectors. Further they "play" in some market segments where almost none do, so they have more products in more categories for us to consider. Currently it seems Epson is manufacturing about 50 different models. Of note, they the only seller of "all-in-one" projectors (since Optoma stopped), such as their Megaplex MG850 with iPad dock, and also have offered integrated systems such as the old Epson Ensemble, their new Brightlink 1410wi (commercial interactive system with projector, whiteboard, and control system, and also their new W16SK, which is a dual stack projector for bright 3D in the classroom that uses low cost passive glasses. 49% of the home theater projector market? And they do seem to be dominating player when it comes to interactive projectors as well. That is impressive.
