CALIBRATING THE VPL-VW350ES PROJECTOR: GENERAL CALIBRATION AND GRAYSCALE (RGB) SETTINGS

Post Calibration Color Temperature

Color Temp over IRE Range (Best Mode, Pre Calibration)
Reference
30 IRE 6118
50 IRE 6144
80 IRE 6129
100 IRE 6133

The color temperature measurements for the VPL-VW350ES, shown above, are repeated from the Performance page, for your convenience.  Below find the grayscale settings general settings Mike came up with as part of his calibration.  Note that he did not do what we call a quick-cal of the brightest mode.  Normally that means taking the brightest mode, and get the most improvement in picture quality without sacrificing significant brightness.  In this case, those modes already look impressively good without any fine tuning.

Mike's General Notes on the VPL-VW350ES

The VW350ES has an excellent picture with all the default settings.  RGB balance was consistent across the IRE range, with just a little too much red in the D65 color temp.  Once the lamp has more hours on it, this may go away.  Even so, there’s little difference in the picture before and after calibration.  Gamma is a flat 2.2 when the Gamma control is Off.  Contrast is right on in every mode and Brightness just requires a bit of adjustment in certain modes.

Mike's Grayscale Calibration Notes on the VPL-VW350ES

As was the case with the HW600ES, a number of modes are almost identical when it comes to default grayscale and lumen output.  At 100 IRE, Reference, Cinema Film 1, Cinema Film 2, Game (which was surprising) and User modes all have roughly the same RGB.  The RGB balance is also very consistent across the entire IRE range.  Red was high in each of the modes mentioned above, but was easily attenuated with calibration.  Before calibration, Delta E had a maximum of 3.8, which is excellent.  The User mode calibrated so well that Delta E was 0.9 or less from 30 to 100 IRE, rising only to 1.4 at 20 IRE.  The calibrated grayscale actually exceeded the HW600ES.
