Sony VPL-VW295ES 4K Home Theater Projector Review – Advanced Calibration: CMS Calibration, Calibration Charts

CMS SETTINGS FOR BEST MODE CALIBRATION – REFERENCE MODE

Red0-10
Green210
Blue4-10
Cyan000
Magenta6-10
Yellow000

Pre-calibration CMS was quite good but there was room for improvement. As I mentioned on the calibration page most of the 6 colors were under saturated at 20, 40, 60 & 80IRE while red, blue and magenta are slightly oversaturated at 100IRE. Except for magenta’s hue running slightly purple all other colors are quite good. Post-calibration yielded fantastic results with all 6 colors nailing or very close to their saturation targets. Sony (along with JVC and Epson) always trump their DLP competitors when it comes to color performance/accuracy.

Blue5-6-7
Cyan0-30
Magenta2-30
Yellow000

It was no surprise that the pre/post CMS calibration was near identical to my Best mode calibration. So, my notes are really just a cut and paste. Most of the 6 colors were under saturated at 20, 40, 60 & 80IRE while red, blue and magenta are slightly oversaturated at 100IRE. Except for magenta’s hue running slightly purple all other colors are quite good. Post-calibration yielded fantastic results with all 6 colors nailing or very close to their saturation targets.

P3 Color gamut performance was overall ok but certain aspects were a little disappointing. A lot of projectors do have trouble reaching to 100% P3/DCI saturation points. Many average 90% or so coverage. The VW295ES looks to be in that same territory. However, a few of the colors seem to have tint linearity issues like yellow but it’s green that is the most problematic with it arching towards yellow the further it moves out to 100% saturation. And with green hue control not working in CMS I was unable to make any improvements to it. I was able to make improvements to red, blue, magenta and cyan.
