Join Sony and Projector Reviews as we discuss their newly announced home theater projectors, the VPL-VW915ES and VPL-VW715ES, at the Fall Projection Summit. These premium projectors look like the old models they're replacing on the outside, but have gotten a huge upgrade to their brains that include a new projector optimized version of Sony's X1 video processor, which allows frame-by-frame analysis and tone mapping of HDR content.

The LG HU70LA is a smart LED projector for the home. It is intended to serve as a replacement for your TV, so it includes many of the features that consumers expect in a flat panel TV such as a built-in TV tuner and apps like Netflix, Hulu, and even Disney+. Priced under $2,000, this LG is an excellent value for an LED projector – add to that its smart capabilities and performance, and you’ve got yourself a steal-of-a-deal for just $1,799.99.

This 4K UHD resolution projector sports a nicely bright 1,500 lumens, which plenty to fill a 100” screen in a dedicated home theater or media room with good lighting control. You can also use this guy in your living room or family room, but it is not a bright room projector – make sure you can dim the lights and draw the shades to block out light, or pair with an ALR screen.

LG has been making Smart TVs for years, and they’ve used this knowledge in building their smart projectors. This makes them lightyears ahead of other manufacturers who are just getting in the game. The LG CineBeam line of projectors (like this HU70LA) are some of the most capable projectors on the market when it comes to smart TV and voice control capabilities.

With the HU70LA, you get integrated Google Assistant. Using the remote control’s built-in microphone, you can control the projector with various voice commands. You can also control third party products from the remote, such as the lights in your theater or media room, and your door lock.

In addition to the TV Tuner and apps, the LG HU70LA can access LG’s long-established app store which is loaded with a massive amount of entertainment apps. Other awesome features of this LG include wireless connectivity and playback, a built-in media player, screensharing capabilities for Android and iOS devices using LG’s TV Plus app as well as Miracast, and HDR.

This DLP projector has that DLP “look and feel.” In his review, Phil Jones rates the out of the box picture quality as Very Good, with no major issues when it comes to color accuracy, and multiple modes to choose from. Black level performance is a cut-above entry level. That is – pretty good for the price and just what we would expect from sub-$2000 4K UHD DLP projectors.

If you’re looking for a projector to replace your smart TV or 1080p home entertainment projector, this might be right up your alley. Thanks for watching our video of the LG HU70LA projector. Check out the projector’s specs below, and if you want more information, check out the full online review:

From The Editor

This video was created as a brief overview of the LG CineBeam HU70LA projector. It was recorded and edited by Nikki Z, one of the reviewers and content creator for Projector Reviews.

If this video is positive and enthusiastic about the projector, is simply because the review itself was positive and enthusiastic. We try to make the videos more fun, a bit less dry, with far less technical detail. Enjoy, but also visit the full review for more depth, even the settings that work best. Thanks! - Art

The ViewSonic booth at CES 2020 in Los Vegas featured two of their projectors, the rather impressive X100-4K smart 4K UHD projector and the compact X10-4K – but only the X10-4K was demoed. The ViewSonic X10-4K is en route to one of our reviewers and will be published shortly!

Now that you’ve seen the behind the scenes look at these two projectors, let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer.

ViewSonic X100-4K

The ViewSonic X100-4K is a $1,699 smart projector with 4K UHD resolution. When we say smart, we mean it – it has support for both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice control, as would be expected, but also smart streaming functionality. The X100-4K is nicely bright at 2,900 claimed lumens, which is plenty for any dedicated home theater, media room, and most living room environments.

You can expect impressive sound quality from its on-board speakers, which are Harmon Kardon speakers, and an ultra-quiet fan at 20db. It supports HDR, but not the expanded BT.2020/P3 color space. It does REC709, which is what we’re used to from TV, DVDs, and non-4K Blu-Ray disks, so you can still expect to be wow’ed by the color – especially since ViewSonic added its Cinema SuperColor+ which expands the color space to 125% of REC.709.

This projector can produce an image of up to 300” – but remember, the larger the image, the more lumens you need. Chances are, if you’re blowing up your image to fill a 300” screen, you’ve got yourself a fancy dedicated home theater with beautiful lighting control.

ViewSonic X10-4K

The ViewSonic X10-4K is a short throw portable home entertainment projector with 2,400 claimed lumens. Like the X100-4K, the X10-4K has smart capabilities! It has support for both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and wireless streaming so you can stream TV shows and movies from your smart phone or tablet, and it does so over 5G WiFi.

The X10-4K has support for HDR, but not the expanded BT.2020/P3 color space – just REC.709, like the X100-4K. It does have that feature, Cinema SuperColor+, to expand on the REC.709 color space, however, so you can expect some pretty great color.

It is meant to be taken from room to room or even outside to enjoy a 4K UHD big-screen experience wherever you want to be. It also has Harmon Kardon speakers, so you can have awesome sound anyway. If you’re a sports fan – rejoice – this projector has CFI (creative frame interpolation) to provide smooth motion of high-speed sporting events. Turn this feature off for movies, though, as it will change the film from a cinematic experience to a soap-opera appearance.

2019-2020 Best Home Theater Projectors Report

2019-2020 Home Theater Projectors Report Main Image

Hungry for more information on the best home theater projectors around? We recently published our 2019-2020 Best Home Theater Projectors Report. This year, we reviewed many awesome projectors across four price classes, starting at below $1,000 and going up to $5,000 and above. The Best Home Theater Projector's Report is all about helping you find the best home theater or home entertainment projector for what YOU need, and to fit your particular budget.

Elite Screens was set up at the Venetian in Las Vegas for CES 2020, demoing their 100” ALR motorized screen, and their very first home entertainment projector. Art will be receiving a 120” version of their motorized ALR screen for review. As for that home entertainment projector – it’s a bundle package. For just $999, you get the projector, a tripod, a portable screen, and a carry case.

The projector is an ultra short throw, LED projector boasting 1,000 lumens, which is plenty bright for rooms with good lighting control – but that’s only one way you can use this new projector from Elite. This lightweight and portable projector is waterproof. That’s right! Completely waterproof. That makes it perfect for taking outside for an outdoor movie night, or screen time by the pool.

MosicGo-Outdoors-2

With this projector, gone is the anxiety of damaging your projector as your kids splash wildly in the pool. You can even get a battery pack for just $300 that has a 3-hour lifespan, negating the need for an extension cord to take it outdoors. With the battery pack, you can take this projector to the park, host an outdoor movie night for your neighbors and kids’ friends, and even bring this little guy camping when the weather warms up.

MosicGo Outdoor Camping
The MosicGo is an outdoor projector with an LED light engine, 1080p resolution, and comes bundled with a projector screen, tripod, and carry case.

JVC demoed their new JVC LX-NZ3B/W projector in their booth at CEDIA 2019. This projector features a laser light source with 3,000 lumens, great placement flexibility thanks to its 1.60:1 zoom lens and dual lens shift. This DLP projector is priced at $3,699 and will begin shipping in November of 2019.

It has HDR and Auto Tone Mapping, but does not attempt to tackle the BT.2020/P3 color space – it’s standard REC709, which we’re used to seeing since the dawn of DVDs. One particularly exciting feature is its Dynamic Iris and Laser Dimming to aid in black level performance, quite possibly making it the first under-$10K DLP projector with great black levels.

Elite Screens had their new Dark Star Max UST Screen displayed this year at CEDIA 2019. The booth was bathed in ambient light, but this ambient light rejecting screen for ultra short throw projectors performed quite well!

Unlike your typical motorized screen, which comes down from a box mounted to your wall, the Elite Screens Dark Star Max UST Screen rolls up from a box that you can put on a low table.

Your typical ALR screen that’s designed for standard throw projectors interprets the light coming from a UST projector has ambient light, and therefore don’t provide the right quality of image for these projectors, as they significantly wash out the projected image.

That’s where a screen like the Dark Star Max UST or new Dark Star UST 3 come in. We will be getting one of these in for review soon, and Art will be testing it out with some ultra short throw projectors for his review.

At CEDIA 2019, Epson demoed their new Laser Projection TV, which they have a 100” and 120” model. The projector most featured in this video is the Epson LS-500 Laser Projection TV 120”. Epson is leading manufacturer in the United States, taking up 50% of the market share of the mainstream market. Epson makes both home theater and business/education projectors, and we have long been impressed by these projectors’ picture quality and performance.

Walking passed the Epson Booth at CEDIA 2019, Art happened upon a demonstration of gaming on the Epson Laser Projection TV 120” and shot a quick video for you to enjoy. Though we won’t know the input lag speed until we get one of these in for review, Epson habitually has input lag speeds that are acceptable to all but the most serious, hard-core competitive gamers. Watching this video, it appears that this projector will follow suit.

Epson has the largest market share of projectors in the projector arena, making a whopping 53% of all mainstream projectors. Epson manufactures both home theater and business/education projectors (the business and education market is larger than the home market, just for your information). This year at InfoComm, Epson was showing their L10 Series, which have high brightness and great color, right out of the box.

Epson-Pro-L10-Laser-Projectors

This video features one of the Pro L10 Series projectors Epson had on display at their booth for InfoComm 2019. The Epson Pro L10 Series consists of six projectors, spread out across three resolutions (XGA, WXGA, and WUXGA): The Epson PowerLite Pro L1070, the L1060W, the L1070W, the L1060U, the L1070U and the L1075U.
