The AWOL Vision flagship, the Aetherion Max, has arrived in my lab for testing. The Aetherion Max is actually the company's newest flagship UST (Ultra-Short-Throw) projector. Like its little brother, the Aetherion Max offers 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160p) resolution and is powered by an ultra-bright RGB laser light source that offers a stated range of 100% of the REC.2020 color space and offers a significant rainbow reduction of 99.99% for both 2D and, interestingly, 3D content.

AWOL lists the Aetherion Max as offering a 6000:1 native contrast ratio, which is impressive. While this projector offers a 3,300-lumen manufacturer-rated brightness, AWOL’s impressive Enhanced Black Level (EBL) technology, combined with the Aetherion's built-in user-adjustable iris, gives users unprecedented control over the projector's contrast and black floor.

Under the hood, the AWOL Vision Aetherion Max features Texas Instruments’ (TI) latest Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) combined with the company's newest SLPC8445 controller chip. This combination allows the 0.47-inch Digital Light Processing (DLP) imager to use TI XPR technology to shift the DLP’s mirrors four times to produce a 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) image with virtually no visible artifacting and all faster than the human eye can see. AWOL offers advanced features such as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). To get the most out of your next-gen game consoles or PC, AWOL Vision also includes a dedicated GAME mode that, combined with the onboard MediaTek MT9655 chip, offers 1 ms latency at 1080p 240 Hz or 10 ms at 4K (60Hz).

The Aetherion Max can display content in all the most popular high-dynamic-range formats, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG. The Aetherion series (Max and Pro) also fully supports IMAX Enhanced content.

Like most modern displays, the Aetherion series features a smart operating system (OS) powered by Google TV, with a large content library, including movies, music, games, and apps formatted for your living room screen via the Google Play Store.

AWOL Vision was started in 2020. Steve Shulman and Andy Zhao got together and decided to launch a new US-based projector company that could leverage the research and manufacturing capabilities of China's leading projector manufacturers. From the beginning of the company AWOL Vision focused on the growing ultra-short-throw projector segment. Instead of relying on the most commonly used blue-laser phosphor technology, the new team chose to build AWOL Vision’s UST projectors with newer RGB triple-laser light sources. By focusing on this advanced laser technology, AWOL Vision offered projectors that delivered both intense color and high brightness, working well in a home theater and a typical living room.

With the 2026 introduction of the company's new Atherion series of projectors, AWOL Vision is offering some of the most advanced UST projectors on the market. The Aetherion series projectors have clearly grabbed the projector community's interest, pulling in $10 million on Kickstarter in less than 24 hours, making the Aetherion project one of the most successfully crowdfunded projector campaigns in the industry.

Compared to a standard blue laser diode that blasts light onto a spinning yellow phosphor wheel to create its color palette, Aetherion uses three discrete laser clusters that fire pure red, green, and blue light directly at the Texas Instruments 0.47-inch DMD imaging chip. Triple laser light sources yield a massive color space that covers 110% of the REC.2020 gamut. In person, that means you get the kind of deep, punchy crimsons and intense neon greens that blue laser phosphor displays struggle to replicate.

The Aetherion Max’s RGB laser light source is bright, offering a manufacturer-rated 3,300 ISO lumens of on-screen brightness. The Aetherion Max is roughly 27% higher light output than the Aetherion Pro. This means that the Aetherion Max, compared to the Pro version, works better in a room where lights-on viewing is the norm.

Pure RGB laser light sources aren't perfect and have their own issues, such as laser speckle that appears on bright backgrounds, like a hockey rink or a bright sky. The Aetherion line significantly reduces and, in some cases, eliminates speckle by running a high-speed sequential laser-switching algorithm that rapidly cycles individual laser diodes, breaking up the uniform light wave.

DLP has come a long way since Texas Instruments first put their chips in rear-projection television sets in the early 2000s. The core DLP technology has advanced alongside supporting tech like light sources, moving from lamps to some of the most advanced RGB laser light sources on the market today. DLP continues to reinvent itself, moving away from spinning color wheels to solid-state light engines powered by advanced LEDs and laser light sources.

Last year, TI started rolling out a new generation of 0.47 DLP chips they call SST, along with a brand-new DLPC8445 controller in 2025, and the combination is groundbreaking.

In the Aetherion Max, this hardware pairing carries a lot of weight when it comes to improving the projector's overall performance on multiple fronts compared to older DLP projectors. This new SST/Controller combo lets the Aetherion Max process 4K at high refresh rates with extremely low input lag (1080p 240 Hz at 1 ms), which is faster than many dedicated gaming projectors.

The Aetherion series features a high-quality lens assembly. Ultra-short throw projectors sit very close to the screen, so they need to project an image at an incredibly steep angle. Generic plastic lenses struggle to deliver a sharp image from edge to edge and often display weird color halos around text. To avoid this, the Aetherion system uses sapphire glass elements with minimal distortion and sharp focus. The projector is designed to deliver a razor-sharp image on screens ranging from 100 to 150 inches.

Both projectors use sapphire glass with what the brand calls Zero-Light Leakage, which absorbs stray light before it leaves the lens housing and improves native contrast. The Aetherion Pro also features a multistep motorized iris, which can further improve native contrast in a dark space. 

When combined with the Aetherion Max’s new RGB laser light source, the new TI SST DLP and Controller offer high-speed pulse-width modulation timers. Together, they drive the Aetherion Max’s laser diodes at higher switching frequencies, allowing the red, green, and blue light pulses to replace the mechanical multi-speed color wheels found in older DLP projectors. The resulting color transitions occur so fast that they significantly reduce rainbow-effect distortions that plague scenes with high-contrast motion.

The DLP, controller, and RGB laser light source can also affect contrast. The newest SST variant of the DLP chip features an improved mirror tilt angle and improved border masking that helps reduce stray internal light reflection. In addition, the new DLPC8445 controller handles real-time scene analysis and laser dimming on chip, reducing latency, reducing visible brightness pumping, and achieving deeper black levels with better shadow separation than older 0.47-inch DLP chips can offer.

For years, single-chip 4K DLP projectors were essentially stuck in a holding pattern. The older 0.47-inch chips paired with older controllers suffered
from high input lag that made serious gaming impossible, sluggish dynamic contrast that caused distracting brightness pumping, noticeable light leakage around the display border, and rainbow artifacts that alienated sensitive viewers.

This new platform addresses nearly every one of those legacy pain points at the silicon level. In my opinion, the combination of the new 0.47-inch SST DMD and DLPC8445 controller is arguably the most meaningful architectural overhaul the consumer DLP space has seen in nearly a decade.

The Aetherion Max is approximately (WxHxD) 22.13 x 5.49 x 12.72 inches (562 x 139.5 x 323 mm) and weighs 19.3 lbs (8.75 kg)

The projection window is on the top surface, along with sensors that detect obstacles and motion and automatically reduce brightness for safety.

The projector’s speakers are located on the front of the unit. The air intake and exhaust filters are on the left and right sides, and connectivity is on the rear panel, except for the projector's power button and USB Type-C input, which are on its right side.

Connectivity is primarily on the rear, except for one USB Type-A input on the projector's side. The Aetherion includes three HDMI 2.1 inputs, all compatible with HDCP 2.3.

Cooling intake and exhaust vents are located on the left and right sides of the projector housing. Air is drawn into the internal chassis through a grille on one side, pulled directly across the internal copper heatsinks and titanium thermal mesh protecting the optical block, and then forced out as warm air through the opposite side panel by the active cooling fans.

The main power button is on the right side panel, along with a high-speed USB 3.0 port. The opposite left side panel features a dedicated 3.5 mm analog headphone jack. The back houses three HDMI 2.1 ports, including eARC support on the second input for a direct audio passthrough to an external soundbar or AV receiver. Next are a Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 port, an optical S/PDIF audio output, a standard USB 2.0 port, and a USB-C connection. The projector also features internal Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 wireless connectivity.

When AWOL introduced the Aetherion series, they made their "Sapphire Glass with Rare Earth Coating" a major talking point as part of their PixelLock lenses. PixelLock reduces focus drift due to heat and color fringing, especially noticeable when projecting on large screens. AWOL is one of the first projector companies to incorporate these high-grade, thermally stable sapphire glass elements into an ultra-short-throw projector.

The lens assembly on the Aetherion series does some of the heaviest optical lifting in the projector's video signal chain, shooting light upward at an incredibly steep angle from inches away from the screen. A generic plastic lens would do a poor job, producing a blurry image with weird color halos around text.

To avoid this, PixelLock lets light pass through the glass with minimal distortion, maintaining razor-sharp focus across the entire image. A major benefit of this premium sapphire glass is the near-elimination of chromatic aberration, the technical term for when a lens fails to focus all colors of light onto the same point. In lower-resolution optics, this usually appears as a frustrating red or blue fringe bleeding from the edges of white text or sharp objects.

The Aetherion Pro features a fixed throw ratio of 0.2:1. This shorter throw ratio lets the projector sit closer to the wall while projecting a massive image, making it much easier to fit on standard-depth media consoles without pulling the furniture halfway into the room. To project a 100-inch diagonal image, the back of the projector sits roughly 4.3 inches away from the projection surface.

The Aetherion system also integrates a motorized dust cover that automatically slides over the delicate lens assembly when you power down the unit, protecting those specialized coatings from floating debris or accidental fingerprints.

The final piece of the optical puzzle is the internal 7-stage motorized iris. Rather than opening and closing rapidly during a movie, this iris is manually adjusted to match your room’s environment. If you are watching a film in a pitch-black dedicated home theater, you can clamp the iris down to a lower setting, physically restricting the light path to deepen the native black levels and maximize dark-scene contrast. Opening the iris to its maximum setting allows the full power of the triple-laser engine to push through the glass, flooding the screen with brightness to cut right through the ambient room light.

The projector includes the same heavy-duty metal remote control with a backlit keypad as the Valerion Max lifestyle projector. There is voice control via a built-in microphone that works through Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. There are shortcut buttons for YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.

The Aetherion series features Google TV OS, which provides users access to popular streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. The Max also supports AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Miracast and is compatible with smart home systems like Google Home and Apple HomeKit, and offers device control via Alexa and Control4.

Google TV Menu System

For casual viewing, the Aetherion series provides a stock Google TV smart platform that serves as the primary entertainment hub. Google TV OS is heavily curated, presenting a clean row of your favorite apps like Netflix and Disney+ alongside personalized content recommendations based on your viewing history. It’s intuitive, though it can sometimes feel a bit cluttered with all of Google’s algorithmic suggestions, especially if you are someone who just wants to jump straight into a specific app.

It seems impossible to escape AI integration, but if you are into that, Google has released a new GEMINI AI app that's a more scaled-down version than the others I’ve seen. Thanks to the generous amount of RAM and the new MediaTek processor, switching between the taskbar style and full menus is fast and easy with no visible speed lag or hiccupping.

The Aetherion Pro and Max projectors come equipped with Gemini for Google TV

Tweaking the hardware is very easy and is done by pressing a separate menu button on the lower portion of the remote control. This section of buttons is the only one without a backlight. The shortcut menu is similar to a “taskbar” style menu found on computers. The layout is comprehensive, allowing users to access video adjustments, the projector's iris, geometry features like keystone, HDR, and audio functions, among others.

As I started putting this projector through its paces, one of the first things that stood out was that STANDARD mode seemed more accurate and pleasant to watch out of the box. Typically, I do much of my out-of-the-box testing in FILMMAKER because it bypasses image processing and yields a more neutral image. Out of the box, the Aetherion Max’s FILMMAKER mode was even warmer compared to previous AWOL Vision models and even the Aetherion Pro that I just reviewed. Maybe this was due to the projector’s increased brightness, but I found STANDARD more balanced.

THEATER mode was also warm but a little brighter and sharper because the AI Super Resolution is turned on and set to LOW. Like the Aetherion Pro, the AI SUPER RESOLUTION mode did help with lower-resolution or highly compressed content; I ended up turning it off.

Because the Aetherion Max relies on a pure RGB triple-laser engine, the projector behaves like most wide-gamut displays. It covers a massive 110% of the ultra-wide REC.2020 color space, which means it can deliver rich colors that many non-RGB laser projectors cannot match.

AWOL includes a very robust color management system if you really want to tweak the picture exactly the way you prefer. Still, for most people, the projector's presets offer more than enough range for a variety of content.

In addition, the unit's Anti-RBE feature did an impressive job reducing the DLP rainbow effect. If you are like me and sensitive to RBE (roughly about 5% of the population), this will be a welcome feature. AWOL Vision’s anti-RBE technology even works on 3D content. Unlike the Valerion projector series, the Aetherion projectors have no standalone Anti-RBE switch in their menus.

With 2D and 3D content playback, the RBE reduction feature is automatically engaged when the projector's COLOR TEMPERATURE mode is set to WARM-1. Also, like other projectors with this technology, it tends to make a high-pitched whine when engaged, though I noticed it less on the Aetherion compared to the Valerion Vision Master Max.

Unlike the Valerion projector series, the Aetherion projectors have no standalone Anti-RBE switch in their menus. Instead, the high-frequency laser pulsing algorithm turns on automatically when the projector's color temperature is set to Warm1. Also, like other projectors with this technology, it tends to make a high-pitched whine when engaged, though I noticed it less on the Aetherion.

To measure and adjust the Aetherion Max, I used my Klein K10-A colorimeter, Murideo Six-G test pattern generator, and Portrait Displays Calman color calibration software.

Since your room and screen material significantly impact the overall picture, I don't recommend using someone else's (like mine) calibration adjustments. If your room is brighter/darker, or if your walls are a different color, copying someone else's results can degrade picture quality rather than improve it.

Pre-Calibration Color Tracking and Grayscale

Aetherion Max SDR Cal-Pre Results

I chose to calibrate the FILMMAKER mode. The average color temperature before adjustment was 6069K, which was noticeably warmer than my target of 6500K. Our measurements showed an overemphasis on red.

The picture mode’s lack of blue along with color shift, as evidenced by the saturation measurements. The Gamma was 2.17, which close to my usual target of 2.2

The Aetherion Max has advanced image adjustments, including Two-Point /Multi-point RGB balance, and CMS adjustments, so you can fine-tune the unit’s image quality. Pre-Calibration brightness on my 100-inch matte white screen was 185 nits

Aetherion Max SDR Cal-Post Results

The Gamma was close my target of 2.2 so I made some minor Contrast and Brightness adjustments.

To correct the projector's grayscale, I used the projector's Two Point White Balance adjustments to reduce the Green and Red Gain while increasing the Blue Gain. While projector has a 10-point white balance adjustment, I didn't feel the need to utilize it. 

Correcting the projector’s RGB balance also significantly improved the projector’s color tracking by eliminating the majority of the color shift. I used the unit's Color Tuning adjustments to further improve the color tracking. Some colors were slightly undersaturated, but most color points were spot-on.

Aetherion Max HDR Cal-Pre-Post Results

When viewing HDR, the THEATER and FILMMAKER modes were the most accurate. Like SDR, I chose to calibrate the HDR THEATER mode. Our measurements show the same issues with white balance and color tracking we found in SDR.

SDR /HDR color tuning adjustments are independent for each picture mode. To achieve better Grayscale, I made similar RGB adjustments in HDR as I did in SDR.  Like SDR, correcting the grayscale improves the HDR color tracking.

To its RGB laser light source, the Aetherion Pr0 can reproduce 93% of the BT.2020 color gamut and over 130% of the DCI P3 color gamut, which is more than enough to deliver a colorful HDR image.

The Aetherion Max comes with an official rating of 3,300 ISO lumens max. I wanted to see what the hardware could actually do when pushed. Like the Aetherion Pro, I wanted to test the Aetherion Max’s upper brightness limit, so I selected the projector's brightest preset, SPORTS, and set its BRIGHTNESS ENHANCEMENT to HIGH. Because measuring an ultra-short throw projector can be tricky due to its extremely steep upward projection angle, I took multiple light readings about 15 to 20 percent off-center to keep the measurements accurate.

With the BRIGHTNESS ENHANCEMENT set to HIGH, I measured 3,803 lumens, just over 500 lumens brighter than AWOL's published brightness.

BRIGHTNESS ENHANCEMENT modes generally introduce a noticeable greenish tint to the picture as the feature is meant to mainly win spec sheet wars rather than for actual movie nights. That said, even without this mode, the Aetherion Max displays a highly usable image that is more than bright enough for most spaces this projector would be used in.

If you are watching a movie or game with the blinds open, even on a massive 200-inch screen, the Aetherion Max’s brightness gives you enough range to make SDR or HDR content look excellent.

Like the Pro, I tested the Max on both a standard matte white screen and a dedicated Ambient Light Rejecting (ALR) display. If you are dealing with a room that has a moderate amount of stray light coming through the windows, pairing the Aetherion Max with a good ALR screen creates a combination that can easily go toe-to-toe with a massive living room television.

One thing to note is that both the Aetherion Pro and Aetherion Max are rated at 6,000:1 native contrast, but the Max’s almost 700 lumens of brightness does slightly raise the black floor. I’ll discuss this more below in the Black level section of the review. For me, I like the extra headroom that the Aetherion Max’s 3,300 lumens of brightness provides me. This extra range means brighter content looks better and Dolby Vision or HDR10+ content really stands out. Also, while the black floor on the Max is slightly higher than the Pro, the black floor and dark area details on this projector are excellent. Dark movies like The Batman and Gravity looked amazing.

As I stated in the BRIGHTNESS section above, the black floor of the Aetherion Max is slightly higher than the Aetherion Pro. It’s simply because this is a brighter projector with the same factory-rated native contrast. It’s just math. This projector still offers some of the best blacks available on an ultra-short-throw projector, coming in only slightly less black than the Aetherion Pro.

Traditionally, 0.47-inch DLP projectors are weak on black levels, but AWOL Vision has made major efforts to address this with its Noirscene System II technology. AWOL Vision claims the Aetherion Max has a native contrast ratio of 6,000:1. However, in our testing, we measured a native contrast of 3,076:1 and a dynamic contrast of around 25,000:1. This means the picture has far more physical depth right out of the box, avoiding the flat, washed-out look that plagues many competing laser TVs.

Noirscene II uses the projector’s 7-stage motorized physical lens iris to narrow the light path, block stray internal reflections, and lower the floor of your black levels, giving you a better black floor and more shadow detail. The lens barrel also uses blackened internal blades designed to absorb stray light before it leaks onto your screen and turns your blacks gray.

Along with the physical iris is AWOL’s Enhanced Black Level (EBL) algorithm, which dynamically analyzes incoming video and dims the laser power when a scene goes dark. AWOL Vision says EBL pushes the Aetherion Pro’s perceived contrast up to 60,000:1 (25,000:1 in our testing). EBL works quite well, especially in tough scenes from movies like Gravity and The Batman, by dropping the black floor and improving dark-area details. EBL is impressive, but I occasionally noticed clipped shadow details or subtle brightness "pumping" when the video cut rapidly between light and dark shots. In the slideshow above, scenes from The Batman, MIB International and Passengers show better blacks than AWOL’s previous line of UST projectors, without crushing them, while still clearly displaying subtle details.

In most rooms, from light-controlled to those with moderate lighting, the contrast looks spectacular, especially when paired with a good ALR screen. To be clear, the Aetherion Max won't completely replicate the absolute, infinite black levels of a high-end OLED television or an LCOS projector, but the Aetherion line offers the best black levels available in an ultra-short-throw projector, at least for now.

As with its sister projector, the VisionMaster Pro, shutting off the EBL and setting the iris to 2-4 worked best for me, depending on the content. While the black floor is at its lowest, the brightness drops significantly, and a noticeable color shift toward warmer tones occurs. However, for a compact ultra-short throw system, the hardware iris and deep native contrast elevate it well above the standard DLP competition, making it one of the most capable options in its class for both moderate lights-on viewing and dark-room viewing.

Pure RGB triple-laser projectors have an annoying habit of turning regular SDR content into over saturated color that runs wild, but the Aetherion surprised me once I clicked over to the STANDARD picture preset keeping oversaturated colors to a minimum. AWOL Vision’s WIDE COLOR GAMUT mode in the ADVANCED allow the Aetherion to map older color spaces accurately enough that classic films retain a natural look instead glowing like a neon sign.

Feed the unit an HDR signal, and the onboard dynamic tone mapping handles static HDR10 reasonably well, balancing darker shadow details against bright highlights, but native Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content is in an entirely different class. Feeding the Aetherion Max direct studio metadata makes a world of difference. Watching the Arrakis sequences in Dune is a perfect example with the harsh desert sun and deep orange dunes carrying plenty of visual weight without blowing out the highlights.

Handling standard definition and high definition sources is another area where the projector holds its own. Lower-resolution streaming feeds come through clean with fewer of the scaling artifcacts that ruin older transfers. The MediaTek MT9655 chip provides plenty of headroom, quietly smoothing out blocky compression noise on messy cable feeds and low-bitrate streams before the image ever hits the glass.

Including full 3D support on the Pro and Max feels like a rare treat for those of us who refuse to box up our active-shutter glasses. Many mainstream television brands washed their hands of the format a decade ago, but having reliable 1080p frame-packed 3D playback ready to go is fantastic news for anyone sitting on a binder full of 3D Blu-rays.

Rainbow artifacts are just part of the bargain with single-chip DLP tech, and pairing one with an ambient light rejecting screen usually makes those color flashes even more obvious, especially to the roughly 5% of the population sensitive to it. AWOL Vision's ANTI-RBE processing is not perfect, but it is remarkably effective. My brain tends to register DLP color breakup pretty quickly, yet the faster pulsing cycle of the Aeterhion Max’s light source noticeably reduced the usual eye fatigue I typically experience during extended DLP viewing sessions. The fact that the anti-RBE timing remains engaged even when syncing with 3D shutter glasses makes watching stereoscopic discs far less of an issue than what I typically experience on DLP projectors.

AWOL Vision took an everything-and-the-kitchen-sink route with HDR support on the Aetherion Pro and Max. You get out-of-the-box decoding for baseline HDR10, broadcast HLG, dynamic HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, alongside official IMAX Enhanced certification.

Watching material mastered in Dolby Vision and HDR10+ makes it stunningly clear why dynamic metadata matters so much on consumer projectors. Direct instructions from the colorist tell the display exactly how to map each frame, sidestepping the internal processing guesswork that hampers HDR implementations.

Switching over to static HDR10 tracks or a live 4K HLG soccer match tells a slightly different story. Without dynamic instructions baked into the signal, the unit leans on its proprietary DYNAMIC TONE MAPPING. The Aetherion's internal algorithm does a decent job pulling specular highlights out of reflective content, but it also seems prone to lifting near-black shadows a touch too high, making them look less black and more gray. That extra pop can be tempting to leave on, though it tends to sacrifice the moodier, low-key lighting the director likely intended in dimly lit scenes.

Pushing through torture-test discs also revealed some mild highlight clipping in bright clouds and high-yield explosion sequences. Engaging the Aetherion ENHANCED BLACK LEVEL (EBL) alongside Dolby Vision can introduce subtle brightness pumping, reminiscent of what we noticed on the Valerion Max. That said, AWOL Vision seems to manage this fluctuation better than most contemporary DLP platforms, and I suspect future firmware revisions might smooth out the remaining transitions.

Stepping up to the Aetherion Max provides noticeably more brightness, and that added luminance helps highlight details that punch through uncontrolled ambient light and gives HDR tracks a genuine sense of depth, even when throwing an image in a family room that lacks total light control.

SOUND QUALITY

I am a fan of ultra-short-throw projectors for many reasons, and one of them is the massive improvement in onboard audio. The Aetherion Pro features a 90-watt multi-driver array split between two 25-watt full-range speakers and two 20-watt dedicated tweeters, backed by software decoding for Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. The projector has no problem getting loud enough to fill a decent-sized living room, and it does so with only moderate distortion. Dialogue sounds like it is coming straight from the actor’s mouth, and effects do seem to be coming from around the room.

The projector's low-frequency response is decent, certainly better than that of basic flat-screen TVs. However, the Aetherion Pro does lack the deep punch required for many movies. Lower frequencies can feel a bit thin or slightly muffled during action sequences. The Aetherion sounds like a decent, low-priced soundbar without a subwoofer.

SUMMARY

The AWOL Vision Aetherion Pro ultra-short-throw projector sells for an MSRP of $4,499 and is the flagship of the company's 2026 UST projector line. The Aetherion Max is rated at 3,300 ISO lumens of brightness compared to its little brother, the Aetherion Pro, which carries a rating of 2,600 ISO lumens. At $ 1,000 more than the Aetherion Pro, the main difference is the extra brightness. Whether the extra cash outlay is worth it depends on the space this projector is used in. If it’s in a space, like a living room, where you don’t control the ambient light, the extra brightness makes a huge difference in this projector's color and HDR performance.

Like the Aetherion Pro, the Max features a stellar discrete RGB laser light source that covers 98% of the BT.2020 color space. This means that in a typical living room with some indirect daylight or a lamp, the image holds up well. In fact, I tested this on both my 110-inch screen in my lab and on my 120-inch AWOL Vision ALR screen in my living room in a room I often refer to as “The Fish Tank” with high windows directly across and from the side of the screen that use wooden blinds that leak a lot of light into the room. During the day, the picture remained very watchable with decent color, and although the uncontrolled light did raise the black floor, the Aetherion Max performed extremely well in this lights-on viewing space.

AWOL Vision has leveraged its engineering strength by combining the expertise of the new AWOL/Valerion company to completely redesign the Aetherion's optical block. The company has updated the projector's precision optics with brand-new low-dispersion sapphire glass elements treated with a rare-earth coating. The benefit of this combination is a reduction of chromatic aberrations, primarily color fringing, as well as artifacts caused by thermal distortion (heat buildup from the light source). As if that were not enough, AWOL Vision also added a new motorized lens protection mechanism designed to fight smearing that can occur due to the extreme angle between the projector, the screen, and the lens elements. This distortion is especially noticeable the larger the projected image. AWOL Vision calls this new system Pixellock.

HDR format handling on the Aetherion Max is very robust, with the projector being able to process and display content mastered in Dolby Vision, HDR10+, basic HDR10, and broadcast HLG. The Aetherion projectors also come with an IMAX Enhanced certification.

When it comes to built-in sound, the Aetherion Max and Pro aren't the most dynamic UST projectors I have heard, but the Aetherion’s built-in 90-watt speaker array delivers plenty of volume, getting reasonably loud with minimal distortion. The Aetherion projectors feature Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X sound capabilities. This means the projector's speaker array can emulate a wider soundstage, so the sound doesn't always seem centered on the projector and can, at times, appear to come from different parts of the room. This onboard sound system is better than most television and projector sound systems, on par with an entry-level sound bar without a 5.1 or larger speaker system. For a better surround experience, use the projector's ARC connectivity to link it to an external receiver or soundbar. That said, the built-in 90-watt amplifier and speakers deliver plenty of volume and a fairly wide soundstage.

COMPETITIVE COMPARISON

Hisense L9Q $4,999 MSRP

These two projectors share similar features, including RGB triple-laser light sources, Google TV, and Dolby Vision HDR10+ and IMAX Enhanced processing. Their pricing is even within range of each other, but each offers advantages over the other.

When it comes to brightness, the L9Q is the brighter projector, offering 5,400 lumens compared to the Aetherion Pro’s 3,300 lumens. However, the Aetherion Pro has the latest DLP imager and controller, which gives it a significant advantage over the Hisense in both black floor and dark-area detail.

The Aetherion’s adjustable iris, combined with its enhanced black-level software, further improves the projector's black floor and dark-area details. If deep blacks with clear detail are critical, then the Aetherion Max has the advantage.

When it comes to sound, the Aetherion Pro, while not as loud as the Hisense, offers a larger soundstage with sound that seems to come from around the room. If imaging is your priority, the Aetherion is a good choice, but for sheer volume without distortion, the Hisense may be better. Both projectors offer ARC functionality to connect to an external audio source with HDMI.

When it comes to input lag, the Aetherion is the clear winner, with as low as 1 ms at 1080p, compared to the Hisense L9Q’s up to 17ms. The Aetherion beats out many dedicated gaming projectors.

Epson Lifestudio Grand Plus (LS970) $3,799 MSRP

Both the Epson and the Aethrion Max are bright projectors; neither is in the range of the Hisense L9G, but they're closer to each other than to the Hisense. From a pure brightness perspective, the Epson exceeds the Aethrion Max brightness by 700 lums.

The contrast difference between these two projectors is interesting. Epson's 3LCD system tends to struggle blocking unwanted light when trying to display deep blacks. In a light-controlled space, blacks on the Epson are going to appear charcoal gray compared to the Aetherion Max’s deeper black floor and dark area details. AWOL Vision’s mechanical iris is also a huge advantage for the Aetherion series.

Epson has an overall color-brightness advantage, especially in spaces with small to moderate amounts of uncontrolled ambient lighting or when using it with the lights on. But if you are dimming the lights for an evening movie, the Aetherion Max provides a far superior native black floor, better intra-scene shadow detail, and much higher perceived intrascene contrast. The Aetherion features a mechanical iris.

Epson built the Lifestudio Grand Plus with solid console gaming in mind. Hooking up an Xbox Series X or PS5 feels responsive, with real-world testing generally showing input lag hovering around 16 to 20 milliseconds at 1080p or 4K 120Hz. The Aetherion Max hits a 1ms range when fed 1080p at 240Hz from a gaming PC. AWOL also includes native Variable Refresh Rate support and Dolby Vision gaming metadata mapping. Epson provides zero risk of rainbow breakup, but the Aetherion Max is far better equipped for advanced console or PC gameplay.

Epson swapped out the Yamaha partnership used on earlier models for a custom 2.1-channel Sound by Bose system inside the Lifestudio Grand Plus. Bose's signature acoustic approach is immediately apparent. AWOL packs a 90-watt multi-driver array, including separate woofers and dedicated silk-dome tweeters, for a noticeably wider soundstage than the warmer Bose tuning delivers.

After years of testing single-chip DLP displays, you hope for improved black-level performance but brace yourself for the real-world outcome that older DMD chips suffered from. With the Aetherion series, AWOL Vision takes a completely different path. AWOL leans on its motorized NoirScene System II aperture to physically choke off excess optical scatter before it ever exits the glass. AWOL Vision's combination of a physical aperture with real-time ENHANCED BLACK LEVEL (EBL) laser dimming and dynamic tone mapping yields the best black floor I have seen on a single-DLP ultra-short-throw projector I’ve seen so far this year.

What really elevates the Max is the included 3,300 ISO lumens of brightness it can produce while maintaining those deep native black levels that give HDR highlights a pop, even in a bright living room. When I tally up the benefits of the Aetherion Max- color volume, edge focus, and surprisingly deep contrast, although not LCOS levels I can’t reach any other conclusion other than the Aetherion Max is one of the most capable UST projectors we have had in our labs so far this year.
