The Danbgei Atom is the company’s first Google TV equipped Laser Projector

The Dangbei Atom is a smart portable 1080P laser DLP projector that retails for $899. Its rated brightness is 1,200 ISO lumens, which is impressive considering its compact size.

I didn’t know much about Dangbei when I stumbled across their booth at CES 2024, but I was intrigued by their product lineup. In this article, we will look at the Dangbei Atom, one of the new projectors they announced at CES 2024.

While Dangbei is new to the U.S. market, it has made a name for itself in Asia as a manufacturer of affordable projectors that combine technological innovation with user-centric design. Known in Asia for its innovative software matrices, operating systems, and smart projectors, Dangbei has garnered a user base of over 200 million, dominating the large-screen software market in China.

Dangbei brought its focus on innovation and quality to the American market by integrating smart technology with user-friendly designs.

While earlier Dangbei models sold in the U.S. were targeted at entry-level projector customers, Dangbei believes it is the perfect time to promote their technological prowess by demonstrating some of their new higher-end models.

The Dangbei Atom retails for $899 and is a compact, portable, smart Full HD laser projector. It utilizes a single DLP (0.33” DMD) chip that can deliver 1080 x1920 onscreen resolution. The projector's slim 1.87-inch profile and lightweight design (2.82 pounds) make it ultra-portable. While it lacks an internal battery, you can easily move it from room-to-room or toss it in a backpack to take with you.

The Atom's ALPD Laser Light source can deliver up to 1,200 lumens of brightness and is rated to last up to 30,000 hours in eco mode. The projector's Advanced Laser Phosphor Display (ALPD) light source ensures a bright, speckle-free, and color-fringe-free image. It offers users enhanced customization with three color temperature presets and RGB gain adjustments, catering to individual preferences.

The Atom is Dangbei's first Google TV™ equipped laser projector, so you can access a wide range of streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Hulu, and Disney+.  Compared to the Android TV platform utilized on many smart projectors, Google TV offers a step up in features and functionality.

Emphasizing user-friendliness, Google TV also incorporates features like Watchlist, Multiple Profiles, Google Assistant, and Chromecast built-in. The Atom supports dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.1 to ensure seamless connectivity.

The Atom measures 7.7 inches wide x 1.95 inches tall x 7.7 inches deep and weighs just under three pounds. The projector is compact and lightweight, so you can easily carry it from place-to-place in a backpack. To maximize portability, Dangbei offers an optional carrying case.

The IR input is on the front of the chassis next to the lens, along with a camera and direct time-of-flight (dTof) sensor used for auto focus, auto keystone correction, intelligent screen fit and object avoidance.

The projector’s Audio Return Channel (ARC) equipped HDMI port, 3.5mm audio jack, USB 2.0 port, and DC input are located on the rear of the chassis, along with the power button.

The Atom does not have a control panel on its chassis. If you misplace the remote control, you can still power the projector off and on with the power button located on the rear of the chassis. However, you could not control anything else on the projector.

A threaded insert is conveniently located on the bottom of the chassis. You can use it to mount the projector to a tripod or an optional table mount stand.

The remote control is slim with minimal buttons, so some buttons control multiple functions. For example, a quick press of the red button on the side of the remote will engage manual focus mode, while pressing the button for two seconds will activate autofocus. A quick press of the black button on the side will bring up the projector’s settings menu, while a long press will mute the sound.

Since I like to tweak menu settings, I wish the remote had a dedicated menu button. However, the remote does include dedicated quick buttons to access YouTube, Netflix, and Prime Video quickly. The Atom supports Google Assistant, so the Bluetooth-enabled remote includes a built-in microphone and a voice assistant button.

THE LENS

Dangbei-Atom-Sample-Lens-2 - Projector Reviews - Image

The Danbei Atom has a motorized fixed lens with a 1.2:1 throw ratio. The projector can project images up to 180” diagonal. The unit can display a 100-inch image from about 106 inches (2.7 meters) away. Below is a chart showing the throw distances for several sizes.

While the projector does an excellent job of automatically focusing, you can fine-tune it using the remote control. Press the red button on the remote control for two seconds to automatically refocus the projector. To manually adjust the unit's focus, quickly press the red button and use the center navigation cursor.

The Atom utilizes a Google TV operating system that provides access to the Google Play Store, which offers a wide range of applications, including streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, along with various games and productivity apps.

Users can use the projector's built-in Google Assistant functionality to control the projector using voice commands. This feature allows you to adjust settings, search for content, control playback, and even manage smart home devices without needing a remote.

Google TV projectors come with integrated Chromecast, enabling users to easily cast content directly onto the projector screen from their smartphones, tablets, or laptops.

The interface is designed for the big screen, offering a clean, organized, and easily navigable layout so it is simple for users to find and access their favorite content.

Lastly, Google TV analyzes your viewing habits and provides personalized content recommendations. The universal search feature across various streaming platforms can help users find content quickly without sifting through multiple apps.

COLOR REPRODUCTION

Compared to other bright, portable projectors in the Dangbei Atom’s price range, the unit’s color reproduction was better than average. The Dangbei Atom includes five preset picture modes. MOVIE is the most accurate picture mode, followed by STANDARD, GAME, and CUSTOM.

Most of the modes were too cool (blueish) in my opinion. Manufacturers often do this to make the image brighter, but it also looks good under the warm ambient lighting in most rooms.

You can adjust the color temperature of each picture mode. Regardless of the picture preset mode selected, I suggest switching the color temperature setting to Warm to get the most accurate image in a dark room.

The CUSTOM mode is the only preset mode that gives you access to additional picture adjustment settings. These include Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness, Color Gain (White Balance), and Gamma.

While most people buying a portable projector will not pay to have the unit professionally calibrated, you can make quick BRIGHTNESS, CONTRAST, and SHARPNESS adjustments to improve the picture quality of the Atom in your room. Several free test patterns are available on the Murideo website and their YouTube channel. Murideo also has written instructions in the resource section of its website. The Dangbei Atom has a rated brightness of 1200 Lumens based on the ISO standard. The ISO 21118 is a standard established by the International Organization for Standardization to measure the brightness of projectors.

The ANSI (American National Standards Institute) lumen measurement is an older and widely used standard that primarily focuses on a projector's white light output. However, the newer ISO 21118 standard can be used to measure both white light output and color brightness, which might be preferred for scenarios where color fidelity and even projection are critical, such as in cinemas and high-end home theaters.

To estimate Atom's maximum brightness, I switched the projector to its brightest picture preset, which is VIVID, and set the LASER LIGHT source to High-Performance mode. I measured the brightness of several screen areas and averaged them together.

The DangBei Atom measured 1331 lumens.

The projector’s measured brightness was higher than the manufacturer’s claim. I was pleased that Dangbei did not overexaggerate the Atom's light output. The projector can deliver its rated brightness while still delivering a watchable image.  I also measured the brightness of the other preset picture modes.

DangBei Atom Preset Mode's Brightness

Picture ModesMeasured Brightness
ViVID790 Lumens
STANDARD785 Lumens
MOVIE730 Lumens
GAME759 Lumens
CUSTOM783 Lumens

Switching the light source brightness from normal to high performance nearly doubled the atom’s light output, but the fan switched to high speed to cool the unit, which resulted in much higher fan noise. The higher laser Brightness mode will also reduce the light of the light source, so it should be utilized only when you need maximum brightness.

The DangBei ATOM delivered an impressive amount of brightness from a compact package. Even with the projector’s laser light sources set to a STANDARD, the Dangbei Atom is bright enough to watch TV and movies in a room with low and moderate ambient light.  Dangbei states that the ATOM can be used for screen sizes up to 180 inches, but based on its light output, I think the projector would look best on screens under 120 inches.

BLACK LEVEL AND SHADOW DETAIL

The photos above show various dark scenes, giving you an idea of the Dangbei Atom’s contrast and black-level performance. Like most projectors in its category, the blacks produced by the Atom were closer to dark grey. However, there is enough contrast to make out details in the dark areas of the screen.

When evaluating a projector's picture quality, it's crucial to consider how the device will be used. While the Atom's black levels could be better, portable projectors such as this are not designed to compete with high-end home theater projectors that are used in fully darkened media rooms. Rather, the Atom is likely to be utilized in settings with low to moderate ambient light, where producing deep blacks is not as critical.

I used Atom to watch various SDR and HDR material content on my office's 100” matte white Elite Screen. While the Atom is quite compact, I was pleased with the projector's overall picture quality. The unit had no problem displaying a bright, colorful image in my office, even under low/moderate ambient light.

The Dangbei Atom supports HDR content mastered in both HDR10 and HLG. While I preferred the look of content in SDR, the Atom HDR tone mapping did a decent job balancing onscreen brightness and highlight visibility.

The projector also supports 3D, which most modern flat panels do not. You can watch Blu-ray 3D or 3D content for streaming services like YouTube (Top/Bottom or Left/Right). The Atom does not ship with 3D glass, so you will need to purchase them separately.

Compared to other portable laser projectors in its price range, the Atom's picture quality is above average. Very few similar-sized projectors can match the Atom's brightness, resolution, and color reproduction.

SOUND QUALITY

Dangbei-Atom-Sound - Projector Reviews - Image

The projector’s built-in 10-watt sound system delivers good sound quality despite its small size. The Atom can also be utilized as a Bluetooth speaker. The projector has five preset audio modes to maximize the sound quality when playing music, movies, or a game.

While the sound system is not very big, it plays more than loud enough to use in a dorm room, den, or bedroom. If you want to connect the Atom to a bigger external sound system, the Atom includes an ARC (Audio Return Channel) enabled HDMI connection to send high-quality audio from the projector’s streaming apps to a compatible audio receiver or soundbar.

While we do not measure audible noise, Dangbei states that in STANDARD mode, the noise is around 24dB from 1 meter away. I could barely hear any fan noise from my listening position, and the sound was not distracting.
