The JMGO NiS Ultimate is the follow up to the 2023 JMGO N1 Ultra

The JMGO N1S Ultimate is the flagship of the company's new 2024 portable home entertainment projector line. It features 4K UHD (3,5840 x 2,160p) displayed resolution and is powered by the company's winning MALC 2.0 Triple Color Laser Optics. The N1S Ultimate provides a manufacturer-rated 3,500 ANSI lumens of brightness, the ability to reproduce 110% of the BT.2020 color space, and a respectable 1600:1 native contrast ratio.

The N1S Ultimate is built on the same gimbal-style chassis featured in last year's N1 Ultra. This chassis allows the projector to rotate horizontally and pivot vertically. When combined with the powerful six built-in easy image adjustment tools, getting a perfectly squared image up to 150 inches can be almost as easy as rotating or tilting the projector.

The N1S Ultimate offers a big sound to match the projector's big image. It features advanced audio processing that automatically adjusts sound based on your environment, delivering optimal audio performance. Experience immersive Hi-Fi sound, co-created with Dynaudio, and be amazed by the 45Hz extreme low-frequency bass.

JMGO is a projector manufacturer known for building high-quality, feature-rich video projectors that offer a real alternative to mainstream manufacturers. The N1S Ultimate is available from Amazon or can be purchased directly from JMGO for a 2,799 MSRP. I genuinely look forward to seeing how JMGO’s new N1S builds on last year's award-winning N1 Ultra. Let's get into the details of the new JMGO N1S Ultimate.

Overview

JMGO_N1S-Ultimate_Featured - Projector Reviews Images
The JMGO features the company's new MALC 2.0 light engine.

The JMGO N1S is the third series of projectors I have reviewed by the company. Several years ago, I reviewed the company's two ultra-short projectors, the JMGO U2 and the JMGO 01 PRO. Both were decent UST projectors with interesting value propositions in advanced features and technology at a value price and an interesting partnership with Leica. Still, ultimately, neither projector rose above what could be purchased from traditional projector manufacturers. Laser year, I reviewed the JMGO N1 and the JMGO N1 Ultra. Both of these projectors represented a significant leap forward in technology, performance, and value and, in my opinion, saw JMGO step up their game to a level that they were positioned to play in the same area as more established projection brands. You can see my full reviews by clicking on the model number links.

JMGO (pronounced J.M. Go) has been designing and manufacturing projectors since 2011. In recent years, JMGO has received much positive recognition in multiple key projection markets worldwide, including the US. Last year, our technical editor, Philip Jones, published an exclusive Projector Reviews video interview with Will Wong from JMGO, who discusses various topics, including JMGO’s history, technical legacy, and current direction. It’s a good interview, and I recommend you check it if you want more insight into an innovative company.

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_MALC - Projector Reviews Images

The N1S Ultimate features the JMGO-developed Microstructure Adaptive Laser Control (MALC) light source with the company's Triple-Color Laser Optics, which combine to provide a premium audio-visual experience. MALC 2.0 takes the best of the previous version's modularized laser stacking technology, providing improved optical performance, small size, and better heat dissipation performance.

JMGO’s modularized laser stacking technology used in the N1S Ultimate is 15% more efficient than previous models. However, it can still reproduce a wider range of vibrant colors up to 110% of the BT.2020 color space. This improved color performance means the N1S Ultimate can display shades of colors that most projectors cannot.

The MALC 2.0 system uses a quad-layered diffuser system that allows the extreme brightness produced by this new projector to achieve a uniformity of over 95%. This high brightness uniformity significantly reduces the appearance of hotspots and makes for a more consistent brightness across the entire surface of the displayed image.

The JMGO has a built-in dedicated, dynamic Light Speckle Reducer Technology (LSR) in the N1S Ultimate that eliminates specular artifacts in the displayed image by over 96%. Laser speckle is a visual distortion that occurs in laser projection systems. It looks like a grainy, speckled pattern that can sometimes be noticeable in the projected image. Laser speckles can distract some viewers, especially in darker scenes. Laser speckle is often more prevalent in displayed reds; however, advanced projectors like the N1 series virtually eliminate this potentially distracting visual effect. JMGO employs techniques like laser modulation to minimize speckles and improve the viewing experience.

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_TriLaser - Projector Reviews Images

The brightness and contrast of the N1S Ultimate projector are truly impressive. JMGO rates it at 3,500 ANSI lumens, significantly brighter than the previous N1 ultra while maintaining a native contrast of 1600:1. Finally, the estimated laser light source life is up to 30,000 hours, which honestly should be more than the time you will likely own the projector.

The N1S Ultimate is a Digital Light Processing (DLP) projector using a 0.47-inch DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) with Extended Pixel Resolution (XPR) technology. The DLP chip is a native 1,920 x 1080p imager that is shifted 4X using TI XPR technology to display a 4K UHD (3,840 x 2,160p) image onscreen. DLP projectors are the most popular imaging technology for home theater projectors due to their long history of reliability, affordability, and primary image quality. DLP is capable of producing good black levels and excellent whites. DLP imagers offer fast response times, making projectors that use them, like the NIS Ultimate, an excellent choice for home theater and gaming. As the N1S Ultimate is a portable projector, the sealed light engine design of this projector makes it incredibly durable. It reduces the risk of damaging key light path components from dirt and debris.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate is a smart projector offering a top-notch user experience. JMGO has updated the N1S from Android TV to the newest Google smart operating Google TV. This significant upgrade has all the best features of Android TV, such as Chromecast, Google Assistant, and, most importantly, the Google Play app store, with access to over 10,000 applications and 400,000+ movies and television shows. The Google Play store offers users the best guarantee of compatibility, safety, and security of any Android application market. In addition, the biggest benefit of Google TV compared to Android TV is its enhanced user interface and content discovery features.

The new Google TV operating system provides users with a personalized "For You" section that curates recommendations based on your viewing history and preferences. This makes it easier to find new shows, movies, and apps that you might enjoy. Additionally, Google TV offers users a deeper integration of Google Assistant, allowing them to use voice commands to search across all their installed applications and the ability to control the industry's largest range of compatible smart home devices compared to any other TV OS.

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_FlexSmart#2 - Projector Reviews Images

JMGO also offers users a range of built-in hardware and software solutions designed to speed up and simplify the setup process. The N1S Ultimate has 3D Time of Flight (TOF) Sensors, CMOS Hi-res Cameras, and intelligent adjustment features such as Auto Screen Fitting, Smart Object Avoidance, and Smart Eye Protection. JMGO also includes Lossless Zoom, Brightness Auto Adaptation, and a Smart Wall Color Adaptation feature that allows users to compensate for a range of wall colors when projecting an image without a dedicated screen. When you combine these powerful features powered by JMGO’s advanced geometric and safety algorithms, you get a projector that provides incredible accuracy when fine-tuning and squaring your image to the screen, regardless of where you place your projector in your room.

These advanced setup features are incredibly powerful, but they do come at the cost of image quality, primarily brightness. So, I strongly urge you to first turn off the Auto Screen Fitting and Smart Object Avoidance and manually align the projector to the screen using the built-in gimbal and tilt functions, which are useful and easy to use. Once the projector is set up to your liking, you can save the settings in the N1S Ultimate's preset memory for future use.

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Sound - Projector Reviews Images

The JMGO N1S Ultimate continues the JMGO partnership with Danish speaker manufacturer Dynaudio. The N1S Ultimates sound system offers two 10W speakers and offers 45Hz bass. While this is not a sub-woofer, the onboard sound system performs better than some ultra-short-throw projector sound systems I’ve reviewed. The JMGO N1 Ultra’s sound system has received certification from both Dolby and DTS. Its advanced audio processing automatically adjusts sound based on your environment, delivering optimal audio performance.

The N1S Ultimate is fully compatible with HDR content, offering HDR10 and HLG compatibility. I appreciate that JMGO has an HDR on/off control in the menu, making it easy to disable HDR if needed. Finally, I want to mention that the JMGO N1S Ultimate will display Blu-ray 3D content, allowing the user to immerse themselves in movies and television shows in 3D.

Like all the N1S Ultimate models, the JMGO N1S Ultimate is a beautifully designed compact home theater projector. This model is roughly 40 percent smaller than the N1S Ultimate Pro and N1S Ultimate Ultra. JMGO has maximized its design efforts to pack valuable home theater-sized functionality and performance into a compact chassis.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate projector features a standout design. It features a single-axis gimbal-like pivoting mechanism that allows for vertical adjustment of 135 degrees, making it easy to place the projector without worrying about stability. The projector also has intelligent geometric correction tools that ensure the image remains square and focused even if it is bumped out of position. These tools can be set up to run automatically each time the projector is turned on, eliminating the need to move the device. With these features, users can even point the projector to project a movie on the ceiling.

The upper side of the projector's stand has a single button for power on/off, but no control panel for menus or volume exists. The good news is that JMGO offers a free control app for both iOS and Android, just in case you misplace your projector remote.

All the connections for the JMGO N1S Ultimate projector are located at the back. The speakers are located on each side, and the cooling system is also at the back of the device, with warm air vented to prevent overheating. The DC power brick gets plugged into the rear of the stand.

The front of the projector has the lens and sensors, which include 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) Sensors and CMOS Hi-res Cameras. These sensors and cameras use intelligent recognition algorithms developed by JMGO to adapt to the surrounding environment easily. These features include:

  • Adaptive Brightness: Adjust brightness according to ambient light.
  • Auto Screen Fitting: Automatically adapt to the screen precisely.
  • Smart Object Avoidance: Move the screen away from light switches and other obstacles on the wall.
JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Inputs - Projector Reviews Images

The N1S Ultimate has two HDMI ports for connecting various devices, such as Blu-ray players, streaming sticks, gaming consoles, or a dedicated sound system. JMGO has the same number and type of ports as last year's N1 Ultra.

Both HDMI ports are rated as 2.1, with HDMI#2 offering Enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) capability. There is a USB 2.0 Type-A port. JMGO offers the same Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, providing fast speed and reliability. The N1S Ultimate also features Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity or the ability to use the projector as an external speaker.

LENS

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Lens - Projector Reviews Images
The JMGO N1S Ultimate features cameras and time-of-flight (TOF) sensors that automatically adjust focus, brightness, and geometry.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate projector has impressive focus uniformity, maintaining a clear image even on the outer edges of my 110-inch screen. With a throw ratio of 1.2:1, it has a digital zoom lens and a powered lens focus, allowing for manual or automatic adjustments. With the increased brightness of the projector, JMGO has upgraded its maximum screen size recommendation from 11420 inches to a staggering 180 inches.

The N1S Ultimate also includes auto keystone correction software for versatile placement options.

REMOTE

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Remote

The JMGO N1S Ultimate remote is gray plastic and feels good in my hand. Like most Android TV remotes, it features the most common buttons for everyday operations, including power on/off on the top left and a Google Assistant voice control on the right. The Google Assistant button is used for voice control of the projector and compatible third-party Internet of Things (IoT) devices via the Android TV and Google Assistant.

The remote has a D-Pad-like 4-direction controller with a select button in the middle for navigation near the top as well as buttons for back, menu, home, and volume.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate projector features the Google TV operating system, making the menus very user-friendly and easy to navigate. If you've ever used an Android phone or tablet, you will find the interface very familiar. The home page is customizable, so you can easily access the most popular apps, settings, and other entertainment services you use.

Within the JMGO N1S Ultimate app menu, you can select a specific input, network settings, streaming apps, and the built-in media player or browse the Google Play Store to find new apps to enjoy. The Settings Shortcut is the button that looks like a gear, which takes you directly to the basic settings menu.

I connected a 4K Apple TV with an HDMI cable. Using the HDMI Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) functionality, the N1S Ultimate can control almost all current and past HDMI-enabled sources such as DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD Blu-ray players. This functionality should also allow the projector remote to control a range of HDMI-enabled smart media devices.

When I see the marked improvement in color accuracy and features in just three generations of projectors, JMGO is making remarkable progress as a projector manufacturer. Regarding out-of-the-box color quality, the JMGO N1S is excellent. Watching films and showing the projectors MOVIE, USER, and STANDARD modes display rich colors that can be as dynamic or neutral as the content requires.

While not the most natural I’ve seen on a projector, skin tones are incredibly balanced, considering that this projector uses an RGB laser light source. RGB laser projectors often display some of the most over-saturated images of any projector, especially outside of the mainstream manufacturers that take the time to factory-tune their presets. JMGO engineers have effectively tamed the BT.2020 beast, allowing this projector to display a fairly color-accurate and balanced image across a range of content. And when the content calls for it, like game content, the projector can reach into that large color palette and produce stunning reds, greens, and blues.

If you are watching movies or television content like Game of Thrones, the best mode for color accuracy is the N1S MOVIE mode. MOVIE mode pulls back on the projector brightness, softens the image (not too much), and shifts to a warmer overall tone that gives everything you watch a rich cinematic look.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate does feature HDR compatibility, allowing the projector to identify and display HDR10 and HLG content, including HDR-encoded games. I’ll discuss this in more detail in the HDR section below.

Additionally, Dolby Vision supports a wider color gamut and often provides better contrast, enhancing the overall visual experience. Not having Dolby Vision HDR on a projector that claims to leverage 110% of the BT.2020 color space is like putting cheap gas into a high-performance car. If you are listening to JMGO, I would prefer Dolby Vision if given the choice.

JMGO gives the user only one mode, the USER mode, which can be used to customize the N1S Ultimate to the user's preferences. Ideally, the user should be able to create custom modes for gaming and movie content.

The unit includes a decent color management system (CMS), allowing the projector to be professionally calibrated if you wish to pay a skilled technician to do it. Suppose you want to improve the projector's picture quality on your own. In that case, I have included several links to free test patterns available on the Murideo website and their YouTube channel to fine-tune Brightness and Contrast for your space.

Murideo also has written instructions in the resource section of its website. Also, check out our YouTube video on utilizing several test patterns called Optimize The Image of a Projector or TV Using Free Murideo Test Patterns. Just doing those things results in an outstanding picture for the price point.

The N1S Ultimate impressed me with its great video quality. While the projector's preset picture modes look decent, the MOVIE and STANDARD modes offer the best overall color reproduction.

BRIGHTNESS

One of the biggest changes JMGO has made with this new N1 series projector is how they officially measure and report the projector's brightness in ANSI lumens instead of CVIA lumens. The other

The JMGO N1S Ultimate has a manufacturer's rated brightness of 3,500 ANSI lumens. Meeting this rating would make the N1S the brightest lifestyle projector I have reviewed and possibly the brightest currently available. So, did it measure 3,500 ANSI lumens? Yes, but it cannot hit this high brightness only using the projector's built-in preset picture modes.

  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Bright#2 - Projector Reviews Images
  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Bright#6 - Projector Reviews Images
  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Bright#3 - Projector Reviews Images
  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Bright#4 - Projector Reviews Images
  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Bright#5 - Projector Reviews Images

Let’s start with the out-of-the-box preset picture modes. The brightest is the VIVID mode in SDR, with all processing turned off, including any auto geometry functions. VIVID mode measured 2,792 ANSI lumens, over 600 less than the manufacturer's rated brightness.

To get the most brightness out of this projector, put it in USER mode, set the brightness to 10, and then select the SUPER BRIGHTNESS toggle in the same menu. When you do this, the NIS Ultimate measured 3,583 ANSI lumens. A cynical person could say that JMGO did this only to hit this high brightness number. Still, this setting is very useful when projecting in spaces with large amounts of uncontrolled ambient light sources. In these situations, getting a usable image is the priority, not black level and color depth. You won’t use this mode 99% of the time, but you will be glad you have this option when you need it.

To get my measurements for ANSI lumen calculation, I set the projector to STANDARD mode, the brightest picture mode, and then took three to four readings about 15-20% from the center of the screen. I measured each of the projector's preset picture modes in SDR. The results are in the chart below.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate does not have the black floor that high-end projectors like Sony and JVC offer, but this projector displays very respectable blacks for a 4K UHD DLP projector. If you don’t mind losing some dark area details, you can take the projector's black level down slightly more than optimum.

The N1S Ultimate produces some of the best out-of-the-box black levels for a portable projector in its class that I have seen this year. It is better than most other projectors in terms of class and price point. I'm not saying you will get OLED black levels, but I think the blacks this projector displays on the screen are impressive.

  • JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_GammaBright - Projector Reviews Images

The JMGO N1S Ultimate GAMMA adjustment mode greatly increased dark details without blowing out the picture. On some projectors, this is listed as a DETAILS adjustment setting, or I’ve seen it as an HDR BRIGHTNESS adjustment excerpt. It is available in SDR modes as well. This extra dark area detail control is nice when playing FPS, role-playing, or driving games. You can see in the three slides below from Willy Wonka watching a particularly dark scene.

The MOVIE and STANDARD modes offered some of the best out-of-the-box HDR images. The best part of watching movies, shows, and games on the JMGO N1S Ultimate is watching 4K HDR content. All of the projector's picture modes support it. There are separate HDR modes for each regular picture mode. I like that you can turn HDR on or off in the picture menu instead of doing it at the source.

The N1S doesn't have a special HDR brightness setting, but it has a GAMMA function that works similarly for both HDR and SDR. This GAMMA function differs from the more detailed GAMMA adjustments in the N1S CMS settings.

HDR content looks amazing on the JMGO. Movies, television shows, and even games look more realistic with HDR, more accurate colors, and increased detail in the shadows, making the viewing experience on the N1S Ultimate more immersive and lifelike.

Unfortunately, JMGO did not add support for formats like Dolby Vision or HDR10+ because the projector's remarkably high brightness would allow an even better viewing experience with the ability to leverage the advantages of the dynamic metadata that is a core part of both of these advanced HDR codecs.

Most TV shows and live broadcasts will likely remain in HD for years, making exceptional 4K upscaling crucial. The JMGO's impressive upscaling capabilities seamlessly elevate 720p sports and 1,080p Blu-ray content to a visually stunning level.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate offers motion smoothing for slicker motion in sports and video games. This feature inserts additional frames between the original ones to reduce judder and enhance overall smoothness.

Sports and live content, like talk shows, looked fantastic on the N1S Ultimate. The projector delivers vibrant, colorful images that are enjoyable to watch. Even high-contrast content, such as animation, appears balanced and free from excessive oversaturation, a common issue with many DLP laser projectors.

GAMING

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Gaming#1 - Projector Reviews Images

The N1S Ultimate has a special game mode that, with the projector's HDMI 2.1 inputs, gives you a better gaming experience. JMGO says the N1S Ultimate has a delay of 15ms at 4K 60 Hz. I couldn't measure the delay for this review. Still, I didn't notice any delay between pressing a button on the controller and seeing the action on the screen, even when playing fast-paced games where any delay can be the difference between life and death for your character.

SOUND QUALITY

JMGO_N1S_Ultimate_Sound - Projector Reviews Images
The JMGO N1S Ultimate comes with an amazing sound system designed with famed dutch speaker maker Dyne Audio.

The N1S Ultimate features four audio preset modes: STANDARD, MUSIC, MOVIE, and SPORTS.

The sound quality of this projector is amazing, even better than many ultra short throw projectors I have reviewed, as well as some soundbars. Even though this projector is small, the sound produced is impressive—the N1S Ultimate rocks. The N1S Ultimate delivers a powerful and immersive audio experience surpassing many of its portable competitors I've reviewed, and it sounds better than most home entertainment projectors, including some laser TV projectors.

The company's continued collaboration with Dynaudio allows JMGO to utilize every inch of the projector's chassis to enhance the audio performance, which complements the projector's high-quality Full HD visuals. The onboard Dynaudio 10x2 sound system delivers remarkable bass for a compact projector.

We don't measure audible noise at Projector Reviews, but I can confirm that the JMGO N1S Ultimate surprised me with its impressively low fan noise of 26 dB. As I put the projector through its paces, it became evident that it is a remarkably quiet machine.

Even with the projector set to its brightest light level, I could barely hear the N1S Ultimate fan from my seating position, about three feet away from the projector on its right side. The JMGO N1S Ultimate fan noise is minimal and in no way detracted from my viewing experience. This projector is an excellent choice if you want or need a quiet projection experience.

SUMMARY

JMGO_N1S-Ultimate_Featured - Projector Reviews Images

The JMGO N1S Ultimate is a great follow-up to the N1 Ultra. It combines advanced technology and performance, making it one of the best lifestyle projectors I've reviewed. It would be the best lifestyle projector I've reviewed this year if it had advanced HDR support for formats like Dolby Vision and more RAM to improve the sometimes stuttery Google TV experience.

The picture quality is amazing. Almost all of the picture modes are well-tuned for different uses. The colors are excellent, and skin tones look natural. The N1S Ultimate is very bright, the best I've reviewed in this class. It is brighter than the manufacturer's rating of 3,500 ANSI lumens. It also has good black levels for a DLP projector, with acceptable detail in dark areas.

Hisense_PX3-PRO_HDR#2 - Projector Reviews Images

The JMGO MALC triple laser engine provides great color and allows users to calibrate the projector using a good color management system. The N1S Ultimate can display 107 billion colors at 10-bit depth and reproduce 210% of the Rec.709 color space and 110% of the BT.2020 color space. It is a projector capable of displaying stunning images.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate provides impressive picture quality, powerful sound, and a sleek design. The projector's new MALC laser light engine delivers a smooth, natural viewing experience with excellent focus and brightness uniformity with up to 30,000 hours of light source life.

Hisense_PX3-PRO_HDR#6 - Projector Reviews Images
The N1S Ultimate's black levels are not bad but not as deep as I have from some competitors.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate sound quality is another standout feature, thanks to the company's continued collaboration with Dynaudio. The projector delivers impressive low-frequency sound (45Hz, according to JMGO) and a wide soundstage, creating a truly enjoyable listening experience.

Hisense_PX3-PRO_HDR#5 - Projector Reviews Images

The JMGO N1S Ultimate is a powerhouse projector with fantastic color accuracy, above-average black levels, excellent shadow details, and enough brightness to use with all the lights on or outside at dusk. The projector features a premium design that's both stylish and functional. Thanks to its built-in gimbal-like functionality, it's one of the most flexible and easy-to-set-up portable projectors on the market today.

The JMGO N1S Ultimate is a projector that works just as well in the home theater, a LAN party, or in the backyard for a neighborhood movie night, projecting a giant 180-inch movie. The JMGO N1S Ultimate produces movies that look and sound great and are one of the best lifestyle projectors I've reviewed in its price range. This projector even comes with its own hard foam carrying case that fits the projector and all its accessories.

At its $2,799 MSRP, I highly recommend this powerful and portable lifestyle projector.
