BenQ EW800ST Projector Review – Summary: Summary, Pros, Cons

Summary

The BenQ EW800ST is a DLP, WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution, short throw projector with smart capabilities. It is primarily positioned as a classroom projector, but is suitable for conference rooms and meeting rooms where its feature set would be useful.

BenQ calls this an interactive projector, but it is not interactive in the same sense of other interactive projectors we've reviewed. Those types of projectors allow for annotation of presentations and lesson material with interactive pens or finger-touch technology. This does not have that, but it does have several smart capabilities that streamline efficiency.

Such features include personal cloud storage, remote control via smart devices, downloadable apps, support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and HID-compliant mice.

The BenQ EW800ST projects a nicely sharp image, thanks to its WXGA resolution. I found the color accuracy of its best mode, sRGB, to be the best for video content such as Journey to Space and the Netflix show Explained.

Text is clear and sharp, as I would expect on a WXGA resolution projector. As you can see from the images below, even small text on infographics are highly readable. These photos were shot in Infographic Mode.

Pros

  • Beat 3,300 Lumen Claim – 4,445 in Bright Mode, All Other Modes Above 2,600
  • Sharp WXGA Resolution (1280 x 800)
  • Good Color Performance
  • Good Lamp Life: 5,000 – 10,000 Hours
  • 2-Watt Mono Speaker – Loud Enough for Most K-12 Classrooms
  • Quiet Fan: 33db (Full Power), 29db (ECO)
  • Smart Features: Personal Cloud Storage, BenQ Smart Control App, Wi-Fi (Dongle Included) + Bluetooth
  • Anti-Dust Accumulation Sensor
  • Support for HID-Compliant Mice

Cons

  • Positioned as Interactive, but lacks many of the features one would expect on an interactive projector such as annotation with an interactive pen or finger touch
