Deke Deacon (Denzel Washington), a burnt-out deputy sheriff is sent to Los Angeles to team up with Sergeant Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) in an effort to catch a serial killer.

As the body count climbs, the detectives both become even more determined to find the killer. Deacon has a nose for the “little things” that lead him to arrest a suspect (Jared Leto), but he provides an alibi and is released. Baxter is unaware that the investigation is bringing up disturbing secrets from Deacon’s past, that could threaten more than the case.
