OPTOMA CINEMAX P2 LASER TV REVIEW

Posted on July 15, 2021 by Philip Boyle
Optoma CinemaX P2 Ultra Short Throw Smart 4K Laser Projector

The Optoma CinemaX P2 is an ultra-short-throw smart 4K laser home theater projector that retails for $3299. The P2 is part of a class of projectors referred to as Laser TV. The P2 keeps the same stunning design as its predecessor, the CinemaX P1, but this time in tan instead of black.

The P2 could have just been a rectangular box, but Optoma knew the P2 was always going to be front and center in your entertainment room because it is an ultra-short-throw. So they chose a minimalist yet modern design that subtly draws your eyes to the projector’s clean lines and attractive shape. The Optoma CinemaX P2 design is complementary, allowing it to fit many entertainment room designs and styles. The projector’s built-in soundbar sports a cloth-wrapped back that looks like a center-channel speaker grill when watching a movie. Optoma has also chosen to forgo the typical projector control panel and put only the Power On/Off button on the top rear of the P2.

Overview

"A minimalist yet modern design that subtly draws your eyes to the projector’s clean lines and attractive shape."

Optoma uses the phrase “Form meets function” in their materials for the CinemaX P2, and it’s not just me who agrees with them. Check out this list of awards that the Optoma CinemaX P2 has received from various organizations and events worldwide. It is impressive.

Optoma CinemaX P2 Award Winning Laser TV

The Optoma CinemaX P2 is more than just a pretty face. Underneath its hood is a range of high-performance technologies that Optoma is betting will make you choose the P2 as the heart of your home entertainment system. To start with, a single blue laser diode supplies light to a Texas Instruments 0.47 DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) DLP (Digital Light Processing) chip that powers the P2.

Furthermore, the CinemaX P2 will display content at resolutions up to true 4K with beautiful color, contrast, and accuracy. When it comes to the lens, you will not be disappointed by chromatic aberration and image distortion because, except for the far edges of the screen, the picture is spot on. In addition, the P2 has just about every feature you could want in a high-end home entertainment projector. There are even a few you might not have known you wanted, like the built-in Bluetooth soundbar and the ability to add a subwoofer directly to the projector.

The CinemaX P2, like its predecessor, the CinemaX P1, is designed to deliver impressive cinema-quality images, providing 3,000 lumens of brightness and a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio according to Optoma. Despite not being marketed as a gaming projector, Optoma claims to have improved the P2’s input lag in Gaming mode. Since I can’t currently measure input lag in my lab, my editor Phil Jones will test this feature and add an editor’s addendum to this review. The CinemaX P2 can project images from 85 inches up to 120 inches. So, on paper, the CinemaX P2 is quite a good projector at its price point.

"The Optoma CinemaX P2 is more than just a pretty face."

The Optoma CinemaX P2 has a manufacturer lumens rating of 3,000 ANSI (American National Standards Institute) lumens, the same as the previous model, the CinemaX P1. The P2 contrast rating is nearly 25% more than that of the P1 at 2,000,000:1. The CinemaX P2 makes use of Optoma’s BrilliantColor™ technology and a 6-segment color wheel. You better believe that we’re going to check it out. Finally, Optoma is touting the CinemaX P2’s HDR 10 & HLG support, which the manufacturer claims will provide “improved color saturation.”

As always, my goal is to provide you with a good idea of how the Optoma CinemaX P2 lives up to the manufacturer’s claims and whether it is the right choice for your home entertainment/gaming needs. And away we go!
