BenQ MW535A WXGA Business Projector Review – Summary: Summary, Pros, Cons

Summary

The BenQ MW535A WXGA Business Projector is intended primarily for business and educational applications.  Good color and contrast make this projector a great choice for small meeting and conference rooms, and smaller than traditional classroom settings.  I appreciate the ease of setup with the pre-installed test patterns and digital vertical keystone.  The Wall Color options are a neat feature, allowing for projection on different color walls, including blackboards, when a purpose built screen is not available.

The MW535A measured in at just above 70% of its brightness claim of 3,600 lumens.  With a price tag of right around $550, I think this is an excellent choice for your presentations in smaller venues even with moderate ambient light.

The BenQ MW535A has four color modes: Bright, sRGB, Cinema and Presentation.  There are three brightness modes:  Normal, Economic, and Smart ECO.  I really like how Normal and Smart ECO are equal in brightness, even though Smart ECO saves up to 70% lamp power.  There are also two customizable modes, User 1 and User 2, allowing custom setting of color levels, brightness and contrast to suit your specific needs.

Pros

  • $550 Street Price
  • WXGA (1280x800) Resolution
  • Lamp Life Claims of up to 15,000 Hours
  • Measures in at 2,541 Lumens – Bright Enough to combat moderate ambient light
  • 30” to 300” Diagonal Projection
  • Digital Zoom – Increases readability of small text and image details
  • Closed Captioning
  • 3D Capable
  • Blackboard Wall Color Mode

Cons

  • Loud fan - 32dB
  • The speaker is so quiet as to be all but unusable when watching movies, both streaming and BluRay
  • The Audio-Out also seems to drastically reduce the volume of the audio signal sent to external speakers
